📚 Description: These aren't my most popular videos ever, but I enjoy the challenge of restoring guitars and always have to set a day aside to allow myself time to work on them - better than no video at all! If there was a great traveling luthier in the NW Ohio area that be great - but until then, I'll work on my own guitars. On the bench today are a pair a Silverburst Les Paul customs that needed some light restoring before listing them for sale - and then the crazy Steve Vai Signature Buckethead Les Paul. Someone put the Utopia Steve Vai signature pickups in it. I kind of regret not recording something with them, but we will hear these pickups when I review the new PIA in Pink and Green anyways!

The Made in Canada parts from the Bucketvai guitar are by Graphtech - Resomax is one of their product lines. I use their nuts and saddles when working on guitars. I've seen guitars from a few manufacturers come stock with their products, and they are decent parts.

Hey Trogly I see you were a little worried with wiring, Seymour Duncan has a wiring diagram website where you input your controls (volume, tone, push pull, mini switch, etc) and what style pickups you have and it’ll create a wiring diagram to show you how it’s supposed to go.

Fret tear out can be fixed with ebony sawdust (which someone actually sells) and drops of superglue... but that fretboard... it might take awhile.
If you have tuners with pins (Sperzel, Fender) and not screws, Stewmac sells a drill guide that’s perfect for those jobs. I’ve seen the baseplate system from another brand, it’s interesting, but I’m concerned the outline of the plate will make an impression like the lettering on yours.

Lol that's because he has a Buckethead Les Paul that someone used Steve Vai parts on lol. I am going to be refinishing my Gibson TeleBird guitar. Yeah look it up, you won't find one lol. I bought that blue Gibson Firebird Zero Austin did a video on in 2018, and I bought it with the sole intention on refinishing it and customizing it using the Firebird body but Telecaster style pickups and appointments lol. Here I thought I was being all original and then I see that several others have done exactly like what I am planning on doing to the exact same model guitar! Maybe I should use Iceman stuff instead of Telecaster and just call it an IceBird? lol.

With the neck pickup you can go to a hardware store and get some machine screws and nuts and glue a nut to the bottom of the plate and youre good to go. I ran into the same problem with some emgs i bought for a crappy epiphone i bought so i could have a guitar with actives and used the same solution.

Here’s an easy fix for the pickup base plate without modifying it in any way. Take 2 saddles from a tune o matic style bridge you don’t plan on using, super glue or hot glue them to the underside of the base plate, lining up the holes. Imperial pickup height screws (Gibson, SD, emg, dimarzio) fit perfectly through a saddle hole. I figured that out myself when someone drilled out emg pickup bushings I had bought. I’ve done this on 3 guitars over the last few years.

    Yo, Trog GOD,
I've found a way to fit metric switch tips on Les Paul's. Start by choosing a drill bit that is slightly larger than the smaller metric switch tip opening.
DON'T use a drill! By hand, twist the drill bit into the switch tip until you "bottom" out.
It's been my experience, that you'll have to use 2 different sized bits to reach the desired diameter to perfectly fit a Les Paul switch.
    Yours in Bizz,
    David

Hey Austin - I know this has been brought up before but as someone who was like you and used steel wool pads to clean his frets, I have come to the conclusion that it's true, you should not use steel wool when you clean anything on a guitar!! Numerous professional Luthiers on You Tube have said the same thing and so I think perhaps it's advice that should be adhered to. Now, I have cleaned thousands of frets using steel wool without any issues at all. Just like I have used a steel wire brush when cleaning my grill, I never had any issues until about 3 months ago when I bit into a piece of steak that I cooked on my grill and got a piece of wire shoved into my gum!! 3M makes a synthetic steel wool pad that I have not used yet but from what I am hearing it is great! It works just as well as the regular steel wool pads without rusting, crumbling apart or leaving anything behind. So I would suggest you check into those, "3M synthetic wool pads". Another alternative that I have and do use is regular sand paper, 800-1200 grit works best. I use the type generally used for automobiles, the "wet and dry" type. Usually they are the kind that are black. I have also used just a regular Scotch Brite pad as well. But give it a try and yes I know, "I have used them for years and never had any trouble at all" - but do you really want to take the chance that the one time a steel wool pad does do damage happens to be on one of your "holy grail" rare finds?

    • @alabamahebrew
      @alabamahebrew 3 роки тому

@@davidkastin4240 Yeah I usually a polishing cream and a rag but when it comes to polishing up the frets on a used guitar for the first time I will use things like Steel Wool pads, but after hearing what professional Luthiers have to say about it, nahh there are other things one can use that don't have the possibility of harming a guitar like how the steel wool pads can, and often do.

That's brilliant, you use their product one and discovered the biggest and most fatal flaw of their system. Awesome and you're 100% right they should have had a left and a right side or maybe not have raised letters have engraved letters but even that might leave a mark So left and right plaques would be the way to go. Nice catch!

Im really interested in trading my guitar but i basically live in a hole so my only option would be to trade online. I was thinking trading on reverb but i dont really know how i am to do that safely. Do you have any way of trading guitars through reverb safely? Let me know if you do.
    Thanks!

Hey Trogly. Try out Fret rubbers made by Crimson Guitars from England. They are amazing. No metal gets on the pickups, no scratches on the fretboard and even different grits for a better polish. Don’t use steel wool any more that’s under your Niveau!

I do agree that in today's world I want all original. 45 years ago I was swapping out pickups, tuners, knobs, pots and bridges. Today when I see the covers off pickups on a vintage 70s model of anything I am disappointed. I have had quite a bit of luck getting NOS parts for several for several 1970s Ibanez guitars. In today's market a vintage guitar is not like flipping a house. I want the originals in the guitar. I do not want harvest gold appliances in an old house that I purchase today.

If your neck pickup is too dark, you can flip it around to add a bit more top end.
