We both regret not having shown the standard where pour artwork is currently at. Here's a snapshot from this morning looking at a very abstract level: shorturl.at/7xpzU
I'm also learning game development along with my computer science studies so glad that one of my fav youtube creator is too it do be quite frustrating at start but piece by piece you eventually get there I'd love a game where you're the narrator ngl
I graduated a good two decades ago and while it has been ages since I coded for a day job, doing so again in Unity and Godot is coming back quickly. In the video I took a base script from Brackeys and was able to add Coyote time and Jump Buffer using good old fashioned logic which felt amazing when I got it working. I'm tempted by Unity's visual scripting - it feels like something that can be used to build really quick prototypes with. All the best and thanks for the comment about narrating a game. The chap doing the talking has been known to do the odd audio book and late night radio show so perhaps at some point in the future that might happen.
Many thanks! The next video in this series will better outline out plans and structure where we think we might be taking this. Appreciate the kind words.
The GMTK seires started a whole day before we had planned to announce something similar so we held back for a while. Then one of us got a job that meant we had to pretty much stop the channel and we drifted away from the concept. It only came back as an idea for something we should think of in the summer when I downloaded Godot and started playing. I'm not too sure who my bf is although I'll go doo a web search. Cheers!
A quick follow up. Our initial idea tree years ago was to make a game that was Celetse, but with guns and a grapple hook. Then we saw Gunbrella and thought well that's been done, better think about something else.
Best of luck, brother. Your passion for games and new ideas is clear in all your videos and I’ll be excited to see the end result. Ambition is where it starts and persistence is how it arrives!
You have one thing that’s tantamount to a good game. Heart. Behind you guys 100%. Your love of games is a crucial part to making a game that shouldn’t be over looked.
Good luck! Finishing my studies in computer science here, and while I do want to try making small indie games, the state of the current industry frightens me quite a lot, so it'll be nice to see you journey through this, I might be inspired
Wishing you huge success going forward. I graduated back in 2002 and haven't really coded for 10 + years although from dabbling in Godot and Unity, I can remember much of what seems to work. That said, Unity's visual scripting looks brilliant for setting up super speedy prototypes. Perhaps I'll go all in visual? I'll cover that in the next episode.
@@GetIndieGaming i did a bit of Unity and it is quite good, especially if you remember the principles of object oriented programming, you can produce pretty clean code all things considered
The simplicity at this stage keeps coming up over and over and it's one thing we are looking to ensure we don't get ahead of ourselves. We have a plan on how we'll be looking to keep things from getting too much for us ask will talk about that in the next video.
As a long term subscriber and hobbyist-game developer, having devoured hours and hours of youtube devlogs, this is really all i could ask for! Good luck on your gamedev journey :)
Thank you. I'm hoping my years in software development and product management will help with planning and being able to deliver something that's not overly bloated. I understand scope creep and hopefully I can figure out when something has had enough so to speak.
As a 42 years old indie dev rookie working on my first game.... GOOD LUCK!!!!! I'll be following your journey. Keep it up, it´s going to be freaking hard. Cheers
I didn't think I could get more hyped about this channel. Maybe I've missed it, but there arent but so many indie games coverers with the capacity for great journalism who are also developers, themselves; this is very exciting. Ill be curious to see if your takes change as you become more experienced.
I've just started my own first game -- which honestly may have never happened if I hadn't found Get Indie Gaming all those years ago! Excited to be working on this at the same time (because I'm lost and overwhelmed but excited - it's comforting to know I'm in good company!). Congrats and good luck!
I remember when this channel had 5K subs. Man, how the time has passed.. I'm very happy you guys decided to make an indie game. Good luck on your journey! We'll be watching. 🙂
Dear Stuart, whatever you create, I'll support. In the last couple of years close to every indie game i bought was due to being showcased here before. So no doubt you'll rock it :)
You can do it!! So excited for this, been following your channel for (what seems like) a long time and cannot wait to see what this new chapter brings! :)
Now this is so king of you to say so. I've learned so much from watching your dev blogs and how to create a world class player character movement. Hugely looking forward to playing your game when it's all ready. Thanks once again.
Huge fan of the channel, and I’ve been an Art Director in New York for the last decade. If you’d ever like to bounce any idea for visuals and need a second opinion, I’d be happy to donate my time.
I'll be rooting for ya through all the trials, triumphs, and tribulations! As someone who has had plenty of ideas for games but absolutely zero practical skills to execute them, the idea of creating something seems daunting. If it were me, I think I'd settle upon a minimalist style early on. I feel like constraints in both art style and overall design would help keep things manageable. The game 140 comes to mind, as it's a simple 2D platformer with simple visuals, but its color and audio really make it way more than the sum of its parts. Jeppe Carlsen is a magician in terms of minimalism and intuitive game design.
Oh the minimalistic style is very likely to be the one we pick. We've been messing around with basic concepts and ideas and this kind of thing is right at the top of list.
Good luck to you and the team. I can’t wait to see all the progress you make! Thank you for sharing this with us. But also a massive thank you for showing me games that have changed my life. 🧡
Have fun with your project! Do not worry too much about art right now. Use basic shapes like circles while you figure out the mechanics and the game feel, then go for a minimum viable product. A GDD could be useful to keep everything compact and to not add things as you go, once you start it's difficult to get out of that rabbit hole. Be patient, this is a long run, do not burn yourself out. Sleep soundly, eat well, and exercise to pump oxygen to your brain. And coding forums! They are treasure! :3
Our regular narrator is a pain in the backside in terms of exercise. He loves nothing more than running up and down mountains which keeps him in good shape, but has destroyed his knees and ankles and yet.... He keeps doing it. Me, well I like a good walk but that's about it. All jokes aside, fab comment, thank you.
Very hyped and looking forward for your journey! As someone who also is trying to take a few game projects off the ground, I wish you all the best (and a lot of patience)!
I got a $4000 dollar PC just to play indies! It's not that I wanted to its just the best games releasing in the last few years are indies. I just love them ❤❤
How exciting! As challenging as it'll be (like you mentioned), it will be SO rewarding - theres nothing else like making something from nothing and it sounds like you've already got a great headstart in the coding/audio. Hats off to you guys for taking the plunge - I'll look forward to any news (no pressure of course) 💪♥️
The challenge here really is what's been calling us to give this a go. As I (Stuart) mention in the video, the issue we have is a lack of skills in terms of creating the art for this. A few folks have suggested we simply go buy some assets which is one way of looking at things. That said, we're looking to try and do everything ourselves - so no pressure. : )
@GetIndieGaming Yup, wanting to do everything is the way I'd do it too, and not having 'traditional' art skills might actually open up new avenues for a simple, but unique art style. Necessity is the mother of invention and all that! That said, there would be no shame in getting help with this side also, but like I said, I'd feel the same as you.
Good luck! I've always wanted to develop a fighting game, but there are other things that take priority, so it'll probably never happen. Still, here's hoping your endeavors bear frut and you guys achieve whatever you set out to do
Best of lucks on this new endeavor, GiG! You have great taste in games, so I'm really looking forward to ser what you have in mind. Also, I've only worked on one -published- game so far, but I would love to help in anything if posslble. :D
Hi there! Many thanks for saying hello and I really appreciate the kind words. I suspect we are 2 - 3 years away from completing this and that's with project drift added in. We each have day jobs, I'm silly enough to love running ultra trail runs which gets in the way of so much other stuff and yet - well let's give all of this a go and see what happens.
That's very kind. I've spent most of the day pulling other planning documents and a few other things we will both cover in the next episode of this series which will air before the end of the year.
It's something I've been looking into in terms of taking a course at our local adult education facility. I think I'll need something more than what I can gain from looking at UA-cam tutorials.
You guys should check out GMTK's series about making a game if you haven't already. He did something similar with his channel that you're doing now. Looking forward to seeing it!
I'm very excited for this! I'd like to help you but I have no experience with coding. My hand-drawing was pretty good quite some years ago, so I really don't know how to help. I could do the german translation if needed. Maybe financial support? Spreading the word is obvious! 😉
Have you thought about streaming some of it on Twitch? The coding section of Twitch feels much smaller than it should be. But creators like Thor on Pirate Software do help.
I am planning on streaming on UA-cam. It's where we have our base of followers and.... we lost our GIG account on Twitch about three years ago, it's a 2FA issue, and we've tried a few times to get it back but never found a human to help us out.
Really? That's interesting. Honestly we don't converse with any other indie game (or otherwise) creators on a content perspective. If there's a common thread to this I could have a guess although I'll not post publicly.
Absolutely, maybe a one off feature explaining how much the game has expanded. It’s an incredible achievement and it should be celebrated. It’s given so many content creators a platform to build from.
Oh that's something we would love to do perhaps at some point. Actually we would really have liked to have made (as we've said elsewhere) Gunbrella but hey - someone already di that and they did it so well.
@@GetIndieGaming Ironically gunbrella is an MV i didn't like, and i wouldn't even call it an MV as it's pretty linear and not much backtracking at all. Think things like haiku the robot, or islets. MV's made by solo devs for the most part
