  • In 1981, Jim Steranko adapted the Sean Connery movie, Outland. It appeared in 6 issues of Heavy Metal magazine:
    Issue 51 - June 81
    Issue 52 - July 81
    Issue 53 - August 81
    Issue 54 - September 81
    Issue 55 - October 81

The design, draftsmanship, production, and storytelling are a highpoint of comics adaptations and a great showcase of cartoonist/illustrator/designer/publisher Jim Steranko's considerable talent and legacy.

Y’all should definitely check out the film. It feels like it exists in the same universe as Alien, and say Blade Runner. Grimy sci-fi.

This is why I love you guys! I have recently started collecting Heavy Metal from beginning to end, usually a box at a time from friends or random sales, and began the process to find hidden gems like this! I had all these issues, but hadn’t gone through them yet, and didn’t realize what I was sleeping on! I just fished these out and can’t wait to digest these line by line! Thanks to my favorite comic book channel!!! Keep Kayfabin!!! ❤

Steranko's OUTLAND was such an amazing creation! As was the movie (strongly recommend finding it and watching it)... that was a powerful period for Heavy Metal, and thanks for this in-depth review! Well deserved! He also did a great short story in Superman # 500, with the double page format. AMAZING illustrator.

10:23 The film Outland was directed by Peter Hyams. Just three years after doing this he would direct the sequel to 2001, 2010: The Year We Make Contact.

I discovered a luxury print in Italian (Atmosphera Zero) when I was like 18 ...from the moment I read it, it became stylistic inspiration for my comic efforts (some of which were published)...the print is lost now, lend to someone who never returned it...Same happened with the German collection of Star Wars Doomworld series by Infantino and Austin, also a great influence on me...

Outland was one of my favourite sci-fi movies growing up. It's a little bit dated now, but it it's in the same milieu as Alien with "truckers in space"... but "miners in space" aesthetic... everything is functional. Grease, sweat and cigarette smoke. Keeping to the theme of Alien, the evil corporation in this movie too - right there amongst them. Definitely recommended viewing.

I hope you all will find this and reply. I have wanted to buy the complete illustrated version of Outlander as it appeared in Heavy Metal Magazine, but I was just a kid when this came out. For frame of reference, they would not let me into the movie theater with my older brother to see it because it was rated R. So Heavy Metal was as close as I got to seeing the film until finally seeing on cable years later. I love the film in part because the production and costume design were clearly influenced by Alien. In fact parts of the space walk costumes were recycled by James Cameron for the salvage ship sequence in the opening of Aliens. Now I know Archie Goodwin adapted Alien into a graphic novel back in 1979 because I have it as well as the movie novels, which were like giant photo novels of the feature films Alien and Outland. You have to remember that most people did not have VCRs yet in the late 1970s and early 1980s so illustrated versions, movie novels and little film clips were all one had to relive or experience a movie outside of storybook records. So I don’t know where I can buy the Steranko Outland issues of Heavy Metal and I was wondering if you could tell me what issues were published and point me in the right direction where I might be able to buy them. I only care about the Outland pages so if the covers are less than perfect, I am fine with that. I just care about having the complete Steranko Outland adaptation. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated so sorry for this long post, but your video is the only thing I ever found to proving that this adaptation ever existed since Outland was not as big as Alien. My name is Mark. If you can reply to this post I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Thanks for another awesome episode. I worship Steranko, and this is one of his greatest comics, at least in my opinion. The movie's a very entertaining take on High Noon. Please consider doing Chandler at some point, gents. Steranko fans owe it to themselves to watch him discuss Bob Kane; the man is also a master raconteur.

On a side note for those who are interested in newer stuff. Since issue 280 Morrison became the editor for HM and in that issue he works with benjamin marra in some funny stuff.

Fantastic episode, guys. I owned a bunch of Heavy Metal issues, but somehow never had the ones with Outland. I only discovered it years ago online. Wish I had kept all my HM issues. Anyway, thanks for sharing the issues here. What a magazine! 10:50 - yes, please! 11:08 - the bottom panel spread reminds me a bunch of MC Escher!

I’ve heard him talk about his friendship with Wally Wood in a few interviews. ( I think Wood encouraged him to do Comics.) So I knew he was an influence on Steranko’s comic work. But you can really feel that influence through this work. Guess I’m off to eBay to track these down. Thanks for sharing fellas.

  • @ianbauer4703

It's definitely an adaptation of Outland the movie with Sean Connery with some of the same scenes. And it definitely looks like the pre-cursor to Frank Miller's work later that decade, particularly Ronin.

What a treat to see this work again! Steranko is a master of composition, perspective, and the placement of black areas. One of his major noir influences was 1946 movie THE DARK CORNER, with cinematography by the accomplished Joseph MacDonald. Check it out--you can see where Steranko honed his expert technique in the lighting of heavily shadowed faces. ua-cam.com/video/OP4inToUMlQ/v-deo.html

I would never give you a "thumbs down" for this but, you kind of lost me when one of you said "I've never seen Outland".
I feel like that's the most basic research to review a comic book version of a movie, and it's not a hard watch either, it's not like having to catch up on seasons of a cult Netflix show; it's one brief movie!
I say this mostly because Steranko was adapting a "universe" that was invented by other production artists first. And then most movie comic adaptations must compress the story into a few quick issues, rather than a line-for-line script adaptation that would have run 30 plus issues.
How does Outland work in this context? But you have to see the movie first to know if it does.

I can see where Kevin Nowlan got a lot of his influence here - from the light and shadows and even the colouring.
I used to read the collected version of this at my local bookstore along with the Creepshow adaptation by Wrightson and 1941 by Bissette and Veitch.

It was collected in Spain and France but not in English as far as I know. If the movie had been more of a hit (it wasn't that great) it would've been the pattern at Heavy Metal to collect it. I think Warner had the distribution rights which makes a comic book collection seem possible, right?
