I agree. Ian Curtis is writing his own epitaph in those lyrics and his genius delivery. It's so sad to think he died at 23. What a talent he was, and could have been.
The tempo in this song really conveys this urgency which is why I love its title. It really feels like Ian is counting down his final moments. Also the lyricism is brilliant.
this is the best Joy Division song for me, the vocals are haunting, you don't have to understand the lyrics to know the meaning and the instruments gives out the meaning of the song even without the lyrics.
My Balcony in my childhoodhome in Sweden in spring of 1980! Me and My good friend, drinking tea and listen to Joy Division on My Casetteplayer! The sun was shining and Ians lyrics was tattoed right into our minds........forever!!
Wouldn't that be Heart & Soul?🤔 After 45 yrs i know exactly what you mean somethings just take up residence returning in constant echo like smoke rings of the mind
The peaks and troughs in this song are like life itself. Always eerie listening to Ian's lyrics in a context forty years after his death. Interviews you read or hear from bandmates never saw his suicide coming despite the bleakness of his lyrics. I guess his contemporaries just saw it as art or provocative in some way. This ranks as one of their greatest songs for sure. The rawness and unbridled mental anguish that that poor man suffered can only be imagined, a burden I wouldn't wish on anyone. Your spirit lives on young man x
Ian never wanted to really step foot in the evil empire that was the USA but Factory was pushing the band to make headways there. Ian detested all things American and Regan.
This song (music) has helped me so much over my 50 odd years, it's just so powerful, in that in times of negativity I feel Ian points towards a better place 'if you can just do it or at least be able to aim for it!' , thank you all
He had crippling epilepsy you know also dealing with a bad break up in his marriage also he suffered from black depression. He still managed to write the most graceful songs. 😢
I can understand how Ian must of felt , I suffer with epilepsy and mental health and I’m 23 everyday is a battle . This song is a masterpiece so sad rest in peace Ian .
What a voice, mesmerizing and hauting at the same time, spellbinding I should say. There's indeed something permanent in this song... To me, it's never been so much to the point.
There's no feeling like going to your Dad's house 24 hours after his death, picking up his still plugged in Fender Precision and knocking out this bassline on the top 2 strings. Miss you Dad nearly one year on xx
