It's like throughout most of their career, they had two main "modes" of their dynamic range, either soft (prog) rock vs. death metal, or soft rock vs hard rock / metal. And now with this new album, it feels like they have incorporated all the modes, three in total (soft rock vs hard rock vs death metal). It's of course an oversimplification, but this is what I think when I listen to it.

Such an album can only be made by a well-listened musician who is not limited by genre and knows exactly what he wants, and we know that Mikael is that. Mikael said recently he's not interested in making just straight prog anymore. Like he got it out of his system.

This album masterfully captures the balance Mikael Åkerfeldt set out to establish 13 years ago when he decided to take a break from harsh vocals. During that time, he explored new textures and experiences that now come together in a work that blends the band’s personal and artistic journey. It’s an album that completely envelops you with its aura, atmosphere, and narrative, drawing you into a deeply human sonic landscape.
Virtuosity has always been an unmistakable hallmark of Opeth. With flawless production and obsessive attention to detail, the band perfectly balances the weight and fury of their signature style while adding a dark and somber depth that enriches their sound. Mikael, after 34 years as the creative core of the band, sounds more solid, versatile, and vital than ever. His voice remains the gravitational center, anchoring every note and emotion.
On drums, Waltteri Väyrynen brings a fresh energy while preserving the essence crafted by legends like Martin Axenrot and Martin López. His dynamism revitalizes the band’s rhythmic foundation. Meanwhile, Martín Méndez, constant and unwavering for 27 years, continues to be the indispensable partner shaping each song’s structure, always adding depth and strength to every composition.
Fredrik Åkesson, who made his mark with Arch Enemy before joining Opeth, has proven that this was one of the best decisions of his life. His solos, speed, and rhythmic textures elevate the grandeur of this album. Joakim Svalberg, for his part, is a fundamental pillar in the album’s most disorienting and beautiful moments. His work on the mellotron and keyboards, combined with his vocal support, enriches every passage with harmony and grace.
This album undoubtedly represents Opeth’s most defined and cohesive work to date-a new standard that opens the door to more ambitious musical horizons. Balancing a look to the future with the foundations that ground them, the band’s genuine passion and commitment to musical artistry shine through. With this release, Opeth doesn’t just meet expectations-they surpass them and transcend themselves.

As someone who has distanced themselves from metal as they've aged, I can truly say that this has reignited my passion for heavier music. Don't get me wrong, I've never disliked metal and I've been a fan of Opeth for many years. My taste in metal tends to lean towards the more extreme side of things. Perhaps it's just modern metal that doesn't do it for me. Anyway, it's a very welcome occurrence that Opeth have brought back the heavier side and yet kept their unique sound. This band has never gotten stuck in one genre or another. Sure they have a distinct Opeth groove to their sound but they've always evolved and tried different things. This track in particular is a solid gateway into Opeth. For people that have never heard them before, this track gives you a small taste of what they've done and more importantly, what they are doing with the heavy prog genre. At least that's if you wish to describe it as such. I prefer to call it good music.

It is likely to be another on top work by Opeth.
It seems that band has reached a certain level of musical progressism and experimentalism in their music where they can do what is desireable for them to do,without any kind of pressure nor frightening about making music as much experimental as it is possible.Arguably at this point in their career after experimenting everything availble to explore in their music, right now it looks like band without new elements to harvest in heavy metal crops, now it has turned back to itself to work on a kind of self-experimentalism based on a canny formula ever created.

As a huge fan of Swedish Shining, the new Opeth album is very good really! Especially §6 and A Story Never Told bringing up some really emotional melodies to let yourself drift into. When it comes to Swedish bands Shining, Opeth and Katatonia are the most innovative creating their own styles which do not fall into the category of just metal - and this is why I like them three the most!

Damn! This is such a great album. Hands down, one of the best releases of this year, and, what’s more, it is great because of the concept and compositional aspect of it, I think this would be incredible even without the growls. It’s even kinda funny cuz I can imagine Mikael thinking the good reception is boosted by the fact he is growling again, but actually when you listen to this the jawdropping moments don’t necessarily come from the harsh vocals (although they sound better than ever). It’s an album you finish and feel the need to listen again to pick more details. Maybe I should give it more time to say this, but I think this is one of the best Opeth albums they’ve ever made.

What I interpreted out of this paragraph:
The father was unable to impregnate, apparently through having been poisoned.
And due to him wanting to have children, he paid another man to make his wife concieve eventualy the twins (controversial plan; gold in mouth, he impregnates)
As it seems, the "donator" would soon perish after said events (soon in nameless grave)
