We use the same A/C solution on the 1968 Hatteras 43 we bought "for cheap" that has been in the yard FOR A YEAR as we've worked our way through 3 different contractors to get the engines rehabbed and running again...great minds think alike! We could not locate the original plastic pins for the trim tabs so I put metal ones in. I am not concerned because we never use the trim tabs and leave them in the up position all the time.
See my comment re engine rehab above. Contractor #1 cost me $3K to diagnose the basic issues, then came to the boat without my authorization the following week and did did another 8 hours of poking around that did nothing to move us closer to our goal and billed me another $2.5K. When I called him out on it, it wound up taking nearly 3 months and threats of litigation to resolve the matter. The problem: the yard the boat is stuck in wouldn't do ANY work until this guy's claim was resolved....good old boy network, y'know...and they control which other contractors can and cannot come into the yard, so we were essentially held hostage. I've had similar problems at other yards with other boats, but I've also had some really great experiences. In this time and age, you can't trust anyone.....BTW, love your vids, watched all of them....we are on the west coast and dont have as many beautiful places to go to like you....keep em coming
We do 95% of repairs ourselves. In fact, we would have done this repair ourselves if we knew what was going to happen. We were trying to save time and get other misc. things done while on the hard.

Thanks for watching! I had no problem at all with the yard. "Jack up" might not have been the right word. I have owned businesses my entire adult life and I understand markups and had no problem with it. I also believe they billed me correctly for the number of hours actually worked. My issue was with how long they took to get the job done. Having worked on my boat many times I have a good idea how long it would have taken me to do the job . 35 hours was excessive. And, if they worked 8 hour days, with three guys, it should have been done in 1 1/2 days, not spread out over 7. Putting in 2-3 hour days is what bugged me.
Bud if you only knew how easy those exhaust hoses were to take off and put on..just use a small grinder with a metal cutting blade Make it so easy to take off . To put on all you need is a heat gun to warm them up and make them more pliable. Easy peasy lemon squeezy..

If you watched carefully you would have noticed that I said nothing bad about the yard. Broward is a top notch yard that handles many super yachts and is not cheap. My problem was with the contactor (and Subs). He was recommended to us by a Captain of a Super Yacht and we have used this contractor before. However, yes, I am always trying to save a buck when I can.

You really didn't even have to pull the boat for that repair.... an inflatable pipe plug inserted at the transom end of the exhaust seals from water ingress.
Sounds familiar ! Contractors in yards simply have the idea that we, the boat owners, owe them a villa with a swimming pool the moment we come into a yard. Am dealing with a bunch of fraudsters at the moment as well. Haven't done sh*t, but want to have over 10.000 usd for the labor. Real value ? Probably just over 1000 USD. But I have decided to take them to court, they can start explaining their calculation methods and even if my claim is dismissed................they will have spent a load of money on lawyer fees, so they can find out how it is to be taken to the cleaners. 😁

Yes, things worked out fine. The boat has been in Titusville since July. We spent a month or so there after the trip and we are heading back there later this week for a two week stay. Cheers!
I would not pay them one cent for taking off the turbo. That was their choice and was not authorized. The only thing they can do is file a lien through the Coast Guard, and they would need to go to court.
Normally on a power boat, 40 to 65 foot range the exhaust hoses are 4inch wire wrapped 3/8 thick hose per foot, they are not cheap, and extremely difficult to work with and go from the engine risers all the way back to the transom exhaust ports
Ouch!... I'm sure you weren't expecting it to cost you that much to just replace a hose.. and bet you'll never make that mistake again..... Live and learn... But sorry that happened to you.... Hope you had some good cocktails after,..🍸🍸🥂🍹
The Department Of Defense pretty much owns all businesses and properties, marinas, etc. They pretty much do whatever they want. They don’t tell you their real schedule, they like to orchestrate everything. They have access to everything a boat would need, but they like to play games. You gotta realize that all these men running the Department Of Defense have the same dream. Your pretty much living it. Cruising around in a boat bar hopping. That’s why you hardly see any boats on the water, because they are stuck running all these businesses. Too me it’s just sad and depressing to see all those boats not being used. Especially since there’s plenty of guys that want to use them.
Dude - Park that thing up and enjoy it as a weekend floating Airbnb. It obvious you don't service it. It's going to cost a coast guard member his life to rescue you both. It's a museum piece.
Boat- Bust out another thousand. Sorry there was crappy communication with the contractor. I work in the electric utility field and deal with industrial contractors regularly. You have to keep the project managers number on speed dial. I don't bird dog them till I have to. I would have been up this guys rear end after the first day. Always get a clear work scope and schedule before hand.
Live and learn. I figure if they did the job timely, it would have been about $3k cheaper. At least we had the extra days to do many small repairs/maintenance below the water line.
Worked at many marina from Key West to Ft Lauderdale. Just a brief look at the hoses it a lowered and upper. They're mechanics that moon light jobs who would of done that for 1 G and laugh all the way to the bank... be careful when your looking for mechanics, there s lot of good ones out there, and the bad..
Sorry to see this bad experience in Fort Lauderdale. This place got too expensive. Next time you need work done, bottom paint or any other hullout job, give Steve for A & J Boatworks a call, they are not too far from Fort Lauderdale and have been providing a great service in out area. Hope this helps you save a bit in the future.
we love it here...this is the toll you pay for the life you lead...if you were on land...it could be a leak that requires you to replace the carpet, keep it all in perspective and remember to " suck it up " when life does not go your way.
I don’t know Ed if the contractor that worked on your boat was professional marine mechanics or not but it seemed quite dangerous to have people working on your boat to come and go and scratch their heads and are not sure how to attack a problem and get the job done that’s scary to me. On a happier note I’m glad the phrase “trying not to sink” has not bit you on the Stern. Lol Glad you are both doing well 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
We have used the general contractor in the past, without issue. Perhaps he made a mistake in who he subbed the work out to. In any case, he should have been more forthright with available.
That’s what most boat yards do they screw you royally, you know what Boat stands for BREAK OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND, love ya both but next time do the work yourself take it from me I’m a licensed captain and a mechanical engineer.
You need to put the yard, the contractor, and everyone on blast for this. They set you up, knew what they were doing, and planned it. It was theft. 3500 for people who stood around and couldn't speak english. In all fairness, you have no obligation to be nice about any of it. Everyone in the area needs to know.
Here in lies one of the downsides of boat ownership especially on a larger boat like yours. Sooner or later you're going to run into a job that you can't or don't want to handle yourself and then you will have deal with outside contractors.
Yet to see...a fair priced boat mechanic who is knowledgeable. Every single one we have met....across the country...greedy. It's about the money. Spend 3 hours diagnosing an issue...1 hour labor for installation....part cost 100 bucks....total bill..80p bucks. Then they get creative with words to justify otherwise...well..travel time or I didn't charge you for such and such...
Holy crap sounds like a bunch of hacks. Sorry, just watch this video before you have someone do work for you next time. That's a lot for a week on the hard I pay 4400 a year much smaller boat includes winter storage too 3207 Carver.
We can proceed on one engine, but in this case, the leak was below the water line. Our emergency plan was for me to get in the water and use contractor bags and zip ties to block off the exhaust so that we didn't sink.
Glad to see you made it out before they milked you for another 8k. Working on boats is physically hard and unexpected technical issues always arise. It’s becoming hard to trust marine yards these days and it’s not their fault we don’t have any youths interested in the marine trade. Being a boat owner now means DIY or ???
Ah boat prices..... take what you think something is worth then add a zero - For example, I needed a new injector for my Yanmar.... 4 injectors for my Audi was about £50.... £256 EACH for the Yanmar....

OK, I give up. What was the smoking glass thing at the bar toward the end?

Faro Blanco is much nicer than Marathon Marina..
One of these days we will try Faro. It is just adds an hour to our trip.
Normally on a power boat, 40 to 65 foot range the exhaust hoses are 4inch wire wrapped 3/8 thick hose per foot, they are not cheap, and extremely difficult to work with and go from the engine risers all the way back to the transom exhaust ports
These were 8" hoses that connected various pieces of the exhaust. All the other sections were already replaced at some time in the past.
Ouch!... I'm sure you weren't expecting it to cost you that much to just replace a hose.. and bet you'll never make that mistake again..... Live and learn... But sorry that happened to you.... Hope you had some good cocktails after,..🍸🍸🥂🍹
You got that right! Yes, we made the most of our time in Ft Lauderdale!
Have several more drinks like always! It’ll make it all better.
I would like to find someone like that. Fortunately, we do most of the work ourselves.
Thanks for the tip!
we love it here...this is the toll you pay for the life you lead...if you were on land...it could be a leak that requires you to replace the carpet, keep it all in perspective and remember to " suck it up " when life does not go your way.
We do. Just venting! 😁 We have the same issue once in a while with our land house.
Lol Glad you are both doing well
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
We have used the general contractor in the past, without issue. Perhaps he made a mistake in who he subbed the work out to. In any case, he should have been more forthright with available.
Oh wow that not fair to you
It was not fun!
@@tryingnottosink9107 I have a 40 ft boat I'm redoing. part of me watching you inspire me, another terrify me lol. Keep enjoying life
That’s what most boat yards do they screw you royally, you know what Boat stands for BREAK OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND, love ya both but next time do the work yourself take it from me I’m a licensed captain and a mechanical engineer.
Cost a lot of money to “Trying no to sink.” Besides, everyone with a boat should know the acronym.
B.O.A.T. Bust out another Thousand. 😖
I'm in titusville. Florida Joe.
We love the Marina!
We have that same mistake rookie this past summer with a $10k break down, sucks . Like you said pay the bill and move on, lesson learned.
That is the right approach. Oh, and vent on You Tube to 50,000 people! 😁
I have had good experiences at Worton Creek in Maryland.
Holy crap sounds like a bunch of hacks. Sorry, just watch this video before you have someone do work for you next time. That's a lot for a week on the hard I pay 4400 a year much smaller boat includes winter storage too 3207 Carver.
We wish we knew our temporary repair would work so well. We could have taken the boat to Northern Florida and saved a lot of money.
@Trying Not To Sink if it would have failed could you have proceded on 1 engine?
We can proceed on one engine, but in this case, the leak was below the water line. Our emergency plan was for me to get in the water and use contractor bags and zip ties to block off the exhaust so that we didn't sink.
@@tryingnottosink9107 if you close seacock on that engine water will still come in?
With those prices you should have bought an airplane!
We do almost all repairs ourselves as well. We made the wrong decision this time.
You could use an engineer
You may not pay taxes , but that doesn't mean you won't be taxed.
B.O.A.T. if you know you know lol
What’s the name of your marine contractor? Dewey, Cheatem and Howe, from the 3 stooges.
I think Cheatem was the head guy!
Or was it Cheetham and Steele 🤣
Ah boat prices..... take what you think something is worth then add a zero - For example, I needed a new injector for my Yanmar.... 4 injectors for my Audi was about £50.... £256 EACH for the Yanmar....
That is one reason why we like to do the work ourselves. It saves a zero!
@@tryingnottosink9107 I hear you bud, I recently bought a sailboat and doing all the work myself where possible!
First
Yes you are!
Sorry but with BIG boats comes big bills, if you don’t want to spend money, sell the boat, at least you have some UA-cam revenue ❤
I know, but we can still bitch about it!😁 Actually, we don't mind spending money, we just hate wasting it.
1st world problems. Be happy 😁
We are! Just venting!
I spent 4000 dollars to replace a fan belt on my motor home.
Ugghhh!
What year is your motor home?
Next time someone shows up and nobody speaks English send them packing till they can communicate with you. That’s not fair to you at all
We agree.
