This song is a fucking beast! It should be getting a major push! She spits on every verse and the transitions are fucking crazy!
I have been hyper fixated on this song for like three weeks now. So good. All the versions of it. She has a really good live version out. I also love the song structure (stands out from other songs and normal song structure) and production choices. I would definitely classify this a dark RNB pop. Dark pop is really becoming popular more mainstream now. Dove Cameron and Nessa Barett are good examples of more straight dark pop. RAYE definitely adds some flavor to hers with the hip hop/RNB influence.
She actually just mutually agreed with her old label to part ways. They didn’t want to let her release this song or her upcoming album. They wanted her to keep writing and doing dance music like she had been. She wanted to dig into her black culture and do this dark RNB pop fusion. She has gone full indie artist so she can have the freedom she needs right now

The beat you're listening to is a callback to the late 80s, early 90s rap music. From beginning to end, that's how it used to sound. A lot of people in the comment section weren't born yet (by the way, that's not a Jay-Z or Kanye sound...go back further than that and you'll catch it) when music similar to this was being made, but if you're wondering why you're responding to it positively, it's because you've all heard/listened to it before. Either way, great music. Raye's very talented. I'd love to hear more from her.

I definitely recommend listening to Hard Out Here especially after you hear about her becoming an independent artist it hitttsss!! And coming in with a song like Escapism as her debut shows that she's not playing around. She wants this and deserves it.

I’ve been waiting for her to blow up BIG because she showed her unique true self even through those generic pop songs her label made her do for years. She made sure if it was generic - that beat was popping and those vocals gave shivers so it was the best generic
