- The Nikon F2 is a legendary camera, and for good reason!
In this video we tell you all about how and why it has reached legend status, as well as the many versions, compatible lenses, and how to load a roll of film!

There was a lot going on back in the day. One positive is one's exposures were limited, so we might have forced ourselves to compose shots better. Now we can shoot hundreds or even thousands of images in an outing, and sift through them on the computer at a more relaxed pace. As much as I love my old gear, cameras like the Z9 and Zf are so far more advanced. I don't think I could have imagined what we have now back then. Auto-everything? No film? Shoot thousands of images without breaking a sweat? What a wondrous time we live in. What will the Nikons of 50 years in the future be capable of? Gigapixels? Continuous capture? Sensors that change shape to help eliminate distortion from lenses? Peta or Exabytes of storage? Energy harvesting power? Holographic displays? 3D image capture from just moving the camera?
Hi guys, the F2AS Photomic was my first camera, a dream team with the 1.4 50mm ai Nikkor. It accompanied me to Greece, Sinai and Bolivia/Peru. Unfortunately it as stolen at the end of my South America trip, I got reimbursed by the insurance but by then I could only buy the F3. A nice camera too but I preferred the F2AS, it was fully mechanic and the battery was luxury....
Now I switched to Fujifilm GFX 100s last year and since the F2AS, it is the first camera I feel again at home (beside the Makina Plaubel 67 which I used between 1987 and 2023....). As a back up to the GFX, I kept the Rolleiflex of my father to maintain a connection to film, still great fun to use it....
Thanks Guys, great video. I love the F2. I bought mine from Sover Wong like 10 years ago. If anyone knows the F2 it is him. At the time I was not sure whether to get a F2A (DP-11) or F2AS (DP-12). By suggestion from Sover I went with the F2A. The reason was the ring resistor. Here is what Sover wrote: "The DP-3/12 ring resistor has many very fine (5 micros thick) metallic fingers, and over time its contact wipers wear them out. There are no more new spare parts. So the DP-12 may not be suitable for you. The DP-11 ring resistor has a tough ring resistor (50 micros thick) and it will last a life time, and there are plenty of spare parts So you might want to consider a F2A.". And I saved some money, which I could use to buy film.
The F2 is still my favorite 35mm film camera. What I find most amazing is the continuously variable mechanical shutter speeds from 1/80 to 1/2000 of a second. That's indicated by the green color on the shutter speed dial.
There were a number of interesting accessories for the F2. I have two of the bulk film cassettes that were coupled to the back release so as you locked the back the film cassettes opened fully with nothing touching the film.
Love these old, solid Nikons. I have the F with the low prism, still looks and works great. Back in the day, I wanted to get the F2AS, but just could not afford it. Nikon introduced the affordable FM/FE, (never wanted the tacky-sounding Nikkormat!) and the rest is history...
The F2 (and later, upgraded to F2as) were my first "pro" cameras, and for me, it's been Nikon ever since then! (currently shooting with the Z9 and loving it!)
I was lucky enough to have been gifted my brother’s Nikon F2 when I graduated from high school. Ironically I used his F2 more than he did which is probably why he gave it to me (he had also moved onto medium format with his Bronca ETR 645 camera).
@1:51 Becky talks about the DP1 photomic head then the video shows the Nikon F2Sb with its rare DP3 head. Both the F2Sb and F2AS had fantastic metering which made shooting slide film a joy.
I've had mine since the mid-80s.Was my grandfather's before he passed. Still works great, as does my F3. I have 7 manual-focus bodies (canon and Nikon) from the 70s-and-80 and they all still work perfectly for never having had a CLA.
I have a F2 A that was gifted to me by my father in-law that was a retired Exec from Kodak. He had amazing stories from the Kodak days about their discussions about the first digital camera.
Reminds me of the old days. I was 21 years old when the F1 was released and, although I couldn't afford it back then, I definitely had camera envy. As slick as this camera was, I am very happy with the current line of Nikon cameras and I have a whole shelf worth of old Nikon's to remind me of how good we have it these days. Maybe I'll start a Nikon museum like Grays.
I still have the black F2 Photomic AS I purchased in late 1977 after an unfortunate incident resulted in the loss of my insured F Photomic and other gear (that's another story). My "normal" lens was a 55mm f3.5Ai which I still use occasionally. The camera still looks like new as it's lived in the leather case all these years..
Becky came to the rescue again. Kon's mic went dead but his voice is coming through Becky's. Cheers!
Yep, that was my camera on leaving college in the late 70s.
I started out with the F2A + Motor Drive back then and still have it.
Ahh, the F2, as iconic as the Leica M rangefinder, and often the SLR used alongside one too. Such a solid tank of a camera, I had an F2 Photomic with the brick of a motordrive attached. I was never really strong enough to enjoy using it!! I went back to my FM/2 & MD12...
I have a nice all black F2 with the DP1 meter head.
About a year ago, I was in my nearby camera store, and on the shelf was a lonely Nikon F.
No dents or dings. It followed me home. Used it a couple of weeks ago. Purchased a Nikkormat in the early 70s. At the time I could not afford the F. Chose Nikon due to their adds. "Nikon! The Cameras the Pros use" Have been a Nikon fan ever since. I also have a Very Nice Nikon S2
I have the F2SB, and I still stake it out when I have the time.
I can't imagine ever selling mine, such an icon! My F3 and its monster motordrive were traded long ago for the equally iconic F4, but the F2 is a keeper!
It’s always a good thing to have the best for heads
Thanks for this video! Nikon F2 really is an iconic camera! I'm glad to own one, F2AS - just recently serviced by the legendary Sover Wong from UK! My F2AS now has a spot meter, how cool is that??
Sover Wong is the best, serviced me an F2 titan some years ago.

I just picked up a Nikon F2 with a sn: 774*** to match up with my birthday ;P
Loving It! with a Voigtlander 58mm f1.4
I got film Nikon bug after the Nikon digi bug. Own 6 or 8 F2 from early ones to last with SBC metering head. Plain no meter head is my favorite. Solid heavy construction is most impressive. None are junk but show light use. These FOCUS unlike the digi ones that are supposed to manual focus, but the little lights are not accurate. Lenses 19 to 300 and some zooms. These do not spend half their life in the repair shop unlike Leica M.
Thanks for the look back. And you could press in the rewind button then slowly cock the shutter but the film wouldn’t advance, for when you wanted to do double exposures. In 1994 I shot a solar eclipse sequence over a couple of hours all on one piece of film that way.
I have all F series single digit cameras. My F2 is an F2S. I love how solid it feels, its old school and super cool!
When the meter quit on my ftn, I bought a F2AS as I like to meter in camera rather than using a handheld meter.
Most iconic fully mechanical 35mm SLR ever made!
Loft the rewind lever up one step, ot does! It gives you gree movement from the photomic!
great review, but you missed out on the feature of the "hot shoe" is NOT on the prism, but on the rewind knob!, so to use any other flash other than the one specific for it (SB-24?) you NEED an adaptor!, also the coolest feature is the addition of the af module, and the 250 and 750 backs, which come in large cannisters, which mount onto this via a frame and battery winder pack below the camera.
Was that a cheeky homage to "Big bang theory"s "Fun with flags?"😀Nice work both...
Nice thanks! Funny to hear that Kons mic prefers a white jumper 😂
The best fully mechanical 35mm SLR bar none!
I used 2 F2as's. Both were rebuilt by Sover Wong. it was a log wait but worth it.
I still have my F2 that I bought new in 1973. It’s a workhorse.
When UA-camrs say they have the bestest camera every, I scoff and say, "Hold My Nikon F2." Then I end their broadcast and most on.

Is the DP2 the 'pyramid' head?
I have my F2S from 1974 still in use and like the better cos bigger LED scale of the DP-2 light meter, especially when light is critical. The camera works for 50 years soon without any service (light meter batteries only;-)) @philosimot
I agree. I have one too . Love it. Hand assembled in Japan. And yes working still , just as it did 50 years ago. Sometimes I just take it out and look at it . Marvel at the 1970s engineering.
I miss the mechanical feel of using those F cameras.
Pity so many cameras of the era have failing electronics - still very usable though ... 🦘
