  • I visited Socaltropics (on Instagram and eBay), a husband and wife duo with 17 years plant experience in San Diego, California. They have been collecting, growing, propagating, and selling houseplants for 17 years and have a rare plant collection that will blow your mind, especially their variegated monstera species. Even more impressive is their practical, economical, and minimalist approach to plants and plant care routine (plant care tips abound!).

    My pink princess loves water. I do let it dry out between waterings but it drinks it up super quick no matter the season. It gets new leaf every week and its winter time here where I live

    Holy wow those Pink Princess specimens were huge and still so much pink. I have one that was gifted by a dear friend for Christmas with 3 leaves. She is pushing out a leaf for about a.month stuck in that Cinderella wicked step sister shoe phase. I couldn't believe when she said that the PP likes to be dry and may need to change my watering habits. Loving this series Doc. Thanks and stay blessed☺👍❤.

    I made the mistake trying to bottom water mine. Needless to say, I had to do a quick replant. She does like to stay D.R.Y. I find it to be a pretty fast grower also. She said there is 2 plants of the pink princess in one pot at about 2 1/2 years old. So I will plant 9 months apart 3 of them. So they grow at different heights. Not at once The leaves are sure pretty but the lankiness of the plant is not. It is ugly how it grows. I like bushy plants. So the only way is enlarge the pot when I add the 2nd and the 3rd pink princess plant into it.

    She is not a pampered princess...maybe we fuss too much over our “special “ plants - we become helicopter Parents. This couple shows this is unnecessary.

    • @klausfiedler64
      @klausfiedler64 2 роки тому +1

      I find it's easy to get a little misled here. She doesn't water often. Yeah, but did you look at the size of the pots they're in. Of course you're not going to water that size pot very often. They don't believe in worrying about the plant's humidity and have no additional boost to humidity. Yeah, but they've got a house full of tropical plants that are themselves boosting the humidity far above what some dude with couple of plants will experience. Providing pots the size of barrels and boosting humidity with a three tier jungle is just another form of helicopter parent. I maintain this is a very pampered princess indeed.

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  4 роки тому

      🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ not sure. Apparently leaf unfurling problems are an issue with this plant, which I didn’t know before but lots of comments are mentioning it.

    • @naysneedle5707
      @naysneedle5707 3 роки тому

      I saw some stuck leaves in the video so it does happen to her as well. For me, keeping moisture in the soil prevents this - if it gets bone dry that's when I get stuck leaves. I will say that the mix I grow in is very different from her mix; I can keep my mix moister without rotting the plant because mine is very loose and chunky. It's a mix of a coarse bark-based potting mix (no peat or coir), coarse pumice and orchid bark in roughly equal quantities.

    They're most certainly not 25-30 in Europe. Maybe in Sweden or the Netherlands but not the rest. In the UK they cost £45+ (mostly 60 and over if we're being realistic). I've been to a nursery in London that stocks a few 'rarer' plants and I saw it go for £99 and they were tiny with mediocre variegation.

    • @LegendsOfMonstera

      Alex Papasozomenos Right. I think the point is that the prices are really over the top worldwide, despite the tissue culturing mentioned in the vid. I guess as long as people shell out the cash, it continues to be a seller’s market. For me to spend 100 on a plant, it needs to already be a worthy specimen. What’s out there rn just isn’t.

    • @aroidpapa
      @aroidpapa 4 роки тому +1

      @@triciaroy agreed on the standard that's out there not being worth it. Don't forget we are also on a difference currency. The plant I saw in the nursery I mentioned in my original comment going for £99 would make it around $130. So not all that much cheaper than the US here :) at lesst not for a pink princess. They are extremely overpriced.

      Any vining Philodendron looks scraggly when planted alone. They are best multi-planted but perhaps you haven't seen many multi-planted Pink Princesses because they're so expensive! I'm going to be chopping and propping when mine's a bit bigger so I can have several in a pot, long term project hehe. Any plant with chimeral variegation can revert, you just have to manage reversions with pruning - it's just part of gardening, like pest management. You do want to be mindful of the risk of reversion when buying a plant or cutting of course, ideally you want to start with good variegation and multiple nodes.

    My last 2 leaves have got stuck when coming out and one has snapped off and well the next one is coming in with a small crack at the moment. Everyone thinks it’s lack of humidity. But they don’t have high humidity. I’m stumped 🤔.

      I don’t have enough experience to help. Sometimes leaves get stuck and that’s just nature.

      The average humidity in San Diego is 65%-75% throughout the year - 65% in winter and 75% in summer - and it’s warm there year-round. The air can hold a fair amount of moisture. Also, climate change is making San Diego even more humid in recent years.

      HardyBoxPot Hi there. Most of our pink princess philodendrons are near West facing windows. The one in the bedroom is near an East facing window 💚 From socaltropics

    I have a chance to buy a small Pink princess with little variegation, what are the chances it will produce better variegation as it matures ?

    I have mine growing in the bathroom in terra cotta and she will start drooping if I don’t water her when she is dry. I wonder if putting her in a much bigger pot would help. They seem to have their plants in huge pots. I have bigger plants of other species but never grow in those big pots but honestly who has the room for those big pots?

    Thanks, we have tissue cultured philos in Australia and the prices are so cheap. Do you know why you don't have them in the US too?

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  4 роки тому

      I’m really not sure why the delay. Probably because aroids only became popular in the US in the last few years and companies are adjusting. I suspect we’ll see more tc plants this spring in the US.

    It's a litle odd to me what she says about the plant losing the green with maturity. In my experience the leaves emerge maroon and then over the time of a couple of months (3-6) changes to green. That's why the older leaves are green.

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  3 роки тому

      Hm maybe it was confusing, but I think she agrees that the maroon fades over time. The leaves will individually get more green as they age, as you have observed. Cheers!

      This is my experience as well. Speed of growth might have something to do with it as well. If the plant is growing fast many leaves may be in the slowing turning green phase whereas if a plant is growing very slowing only the latest leaf or two may have the darker newish look.

    I have always heard that PPP like always moist soil....different said here. Also, that if there is no green in the leaf like many of these, that the leaf will be short lived....again, obviously not.
    Plus, if you start to lose the variagation, it needs to be cut back. Hmmmmm
    And I o offense but the video was more interesting when you were in their home...instead of you just talking to us.
