I've seen very little extra items even from a lv3 gym. The extra berries are okay, but since I buy pokeballs I don't care about the extra one or two. As for spawn rates, I haven't personally seen anything that leads me to believe it. Clearing the whole field and waiting didn't seem to change anything in over an hour of testing. As daxi points out, if you have one near home it might be okay, but for most of us it's a gimmick. The extra heart is okay as well, though if you don't mind dropping a few bucks on poffins I'd go that route since it is faster to excited pokemon than any other guide.
200 balls per month unless there's something going on I'm really interested in, such as this past weekend. Shiny eevee hunting put me at around 600 balls used overall, and roughly 300k stardust(though I don't need it, I'm sitting on several million that I hardly touch). I could never f2p around here. There's no stops or gyms around, and it's a 20 min drive to the nearest. Several buddies are f2p but will drop for 200 balls at the start of the month. Once you have your league teams set(if you battle), and are level capped, the only reason to Eeven go out and catch is if there's a special event going on. I'm sitting on 346 pokeballs, 376 great balls, and 256 ultra balls presently and probably won't use more than 50 the rest of the month, since there's nothing else going on I need or want. If there's a field research then sure, but otherwise it's doubtful they'll see use. We'll that is unless somehow they increase spawn rate to finish the Mew and Meltan chains. I've got both already from older event/mystery box, but I've had the meltan chain since it released. Stupid that ditto forms are almost completely eaten up by multiple holiday/event spawns this month. But then I've always hated the idea of catching one certain pokemon to advance a story, especially when it has a 3% spawn rate chance.
I tested this out myself already at a PokéStop like you and I got the same results. when I powered up my gym to level three I got a lot more rewards. If it’s a home gym it’s worth it or if you’re going to grind a spot for a couple days I think it’s worth it

Something I have found - it is much more worth it to do a single scan if you get the field research task with a poffin as a reward. You can get them quite frequently from nearby stops, and makes it much more worth the time in my books. Yesterday i powered up a stop to lvl1 and got 5 poffins for very little work.
After thinking I wouldn't do any scans, I powered up my home gym to level 1 and will probably do it whenever I can. Another good time will be for raids. I'll let people know they'll be getting 3 (or is it 2?) extra balls to help catch if it's a level 3 gym. I can see that being a little more attractive to people in discords much like weather boosted battles can be. Other than that, I think it'll be a community effort to get these powered up as people might be willing to scan once for those pofins :D
I live in an area that has 3 schools and a community center. There are a ton of Pokémon Go players around me and not even once have I seen any of these gyms or stops scanned. Could have been such a cool feature if it didn't involve AR mapping.

I also powered one up to lvl 1 for the fun of it, and I agree with your conclusion, only worth it if you can reach it from your house. One additional comment though: until you reach lvl 1, there doesn't seem to be a time limit (at first glance). I powered mine up in 4 days, passing by it every day, doing a scan, uploading it at home later and it never dropped lower. So if you can't reach one from your house, the only other "use" for it is to check on your usual walk if it's a poffin scan. If yes, upload it, if no, don't bother (unless you really need those 10 balls). Eventually after X days - could be weeks - you'll reach lvl 1, and then you get a free gift from the spin for the next 48 hours.

Daxi, heads up. When I powered up a gym. I was getting way more items than u. I work by a gym so I did some tests. The spawns were slightly increased but the gyms power up way better

Since it lasts for a few days, I would say if you have a stop accessible from your house or apartment and you spin the stop a lot, it definitely is worth it doing and you don't have to redo it that often.
I notice that if you record at a lower resolution quality, it will cut the data usage in half. I've tested with 2 phones and my old phone (Samsung Note 8) uploads half the data compared to my newer phone (Samsung Note 10). Something to test out next time. :D
Still hoping they change the feature to that power ups are permanent and per player. What I mean by that is that I could Scan a Pokestop and get 1 Point for that Pokestop and if I have ... 15 points or something, I get extra items/more spawns. Permanently. That would actually be worth it then, at least for the pokestops one interacts with on a regular basis. They could even do other stuff, like, if you get 100 points, you get an encounter with a legendary or something. (Would be great for people in rural areas who have no one for raids.)
Thank you for testing that. I haven't noticed that much of a difference. Now it's confirmed haha. Would have been better to give like a XL candy chance or incubator. So there would be some benefit and chances would be low but still a chance. Cause you can spin stops constantly. And maybe for spawn, a rare spawn chance.
Thank you for your work! I really can't imagine what goes through Niantic's designers heads. They expect their players to to do all this massive work around the world, and for what? Why would I spend even a minute doing a side activity, benefiting only Niantic, without a proper, actual, meaningful incentive??? All this massive amounts of data and real world locations given to them for free? Us, running the danger of public backlash, for recording on public like baboons? It's like the wanted it to fail or something.. 3 days duration? Fake increased spawns. 3-5 extra items?? People at Niantic never understood the meaning of proper incentive. Dropping the ball everytime. AR mapping, should have been the most generous, most profiting activity for players, IF they wanted it to succeed in the first place. Just my 2 cents..

It's to cold to walk over there and spend what looked like maybe 30 minutes scanning my feet for another pokeball or berry, both of which I toss out endlessly. Not worth it for me at all. Also, if you only have one pokey stop in your local town, this would be very helpful. Rural play, it be a cruel beast.
I more or less agree - spin more pokestops works better. I've gotten a standard potion at a powered up gym in addition to the regular and great pokeball (spin 2x at two gyms for total of 4x) - which is about all I got from two different powered up pokestops (the balls that is). I recall reading somewhere that this is more for players who have limited stops in their neighborhood(s) and/or what not - But I usually spend an hour walking at the park for health reasons and there's usually plenty of stops and gyms at the more moderately sized park. Was not impressed and also found hilarity that I can still Scan/powered up level 3 gym (I assumed it was lazy programming so it doesn't affect current AR mapping quests - I do like the poffins quests!!!!)
Regarding gyms, I feel it's more reasonable to get your gold badge- way more items, XP and stardust on your way to gold badge. It has to be changed redically. I might scan random stops if they can be combined with AR mapping task that gives poffin or rare pokemon.

New Scanning Requirments: Initial Rewards - 5 for lvl 1 10 for lvl 2 20 for lvl 3 Required for Perma Boost - 25 for level 1 50 for level 2 75 for level 3 -Perma Boosted stops will last for 3 months to keep them perma boosted u will need to do 10 scans each month to keep it at the level it is currently at. If u dont the stop will drop one level each month until its level 0 again. - On top of these changes we will need scanning tasks to reward better items. 3 Rare Candy XLs, 10 Rare Candies, 3 Puffins, 5 Evo Stones, 2 Lure Modules, 1 Remote Pass, 1 Premium Pass, 2 Orange Pass's that expire that day, etc etc If this is how it was implemented it would incentivize scanning and give proper rewards for doing so. - Thank you

But after a week when this feature came out the scan option was gone and instead went to the stop right beside of it. And now I no longer get AR mapping tasks when I spin that gym. No confirmation of this, but I have long suspected that Niantic will move the scannable features around as they get "enough" data on certain stops/gyms
I would say it's worth doing it prior to raid hour with gyms so that you get the extra balls for catching the five star pokémon. If you can coordinate with a bunch of people to power up gyms at a park or downtown you will all get extra balls for catching the legendaries.
Its an inconvenience basically because of the very low rewards. Now if it was just 3 scans for lvl 1, 5 scans for lvl 2 and 15 scans for lvl 3 with the same rewards then it wouldnt be as bad but still somewhat of an inconvenience. They should give an extra item based upon the level like you said. Also maybe fixing it to where if you power up a stop or gym 5 times in a given day youll get 20 poké balls as an extra reward for doing so
You know, Niantic sure is going through a lot of trouble trying to get people to do these AR mapping tasks. First, they try bribing us to do their work for them with the mediocre rewards, now they're trying again with these Powered up Pokestops. Here's a newsflash for Niantic: Nobody cares. Most players I know do not even turn on the AR function. And if all this is just to catch Kecleon, whenever they release it, we're still not going to care enough to use it. And if they make us turn it on in order to catch it, guess what? We're going to turn it off afterwards because we don't care. Niantic needs to stop wasting time and money trying to develop this function that none of us care about. If Niantic wants us to do their work for them, they need to pay us with rewards that are worth the hassle.
What a great video, thanks for confirming what we all suspected - I could see this as a feature in a high traffic area on a com day, but totally worthless otherwise.
The only other time this might be worth it is on CD. If you are with a large group you could power up a pokestop with just a few scans each. Do this all on a grind route just before it starts. Other than that this really is a horrible feature. If they made it permanently powered up than yeah, but not for a few days
I scan the ground. I slowly sway left to right or pace back and fourth. It looks like I am just texting on my phone or watching a video. I have two gyms right next to each other; one can been powered up, the other cannot. After doing a few spins of each. It seems that the powered up gym gives bonus items similar to team bonus (2-4 extra items). I could stand there and scan 25 times or I could just walk 100 meters in either direction to spin other stops in my area for the same affect. Scanning takes WAY too long - especially if you are doing this solo. If they decreased it to like 2 scans per level, MAYBE I would take the time, but otherwise it was a complete waste of my time.
ever since they added this I have been getting way more AR mapping tasks. 6 pokestops all asked me to scan one place... I wish mapping tasks were only on the place that needs mapping.
I remember when first leaks were appearing of this feature. I was very hyped for it but when it actually came, it was more disappointing then Cyberpunk 2077 lunch ...
The only thing I got from doing this at a gym, was stares and questions of why am I videoing a church in the afternoon? You tell them pokemon go they will not know what you are talking about, or they will think you are lying.
I think required scans are reduced, at least I have now 15 scans to lvl 3. Overall it should be reduced. For example if you reach lvl 3 one time then next time you need only 20 scans, 15, 10 etc. At the end if there are lot of "Scanners" they will still have a lot of data and peope might actually do it correctly not scan their boots all the time.
During Com day on Saterday when it was snowing badly, I went to a Gym lvl 3 that had 2 stops and parked my car there. I added lures to both stops and stayed there for 3 hours. I think it was worth it having the lvl 3 gym since I'd get more pokeballs back with it and team bonus. I had a very stable income of pokeballs and could keep going for a long time. But yeah, I think that's the only time I think would be worth leveling it to 3 other than living on it. If it would last a week or 2 and would downgrade by 1 level, then perhaps.
While doing this noticed if you move you camera soo fast to make the video completely blurry the MB needed to uploaded the scan is half the amount needed to upload
I did this the other day in my home town... only thing I notice was gyms giving more items at time.. almost felt like doing the daily spin of the day everytime

on gyms I have an at home gym and when I powered it up to only level two it was giving me like 5+ items today I'm going to power up to level three and going to make it my own team then spin it for the seven day streak and I'm going to like 90 items

The only time I ever do AR scans is when its a poffin, on my usual catching route and it doesn't slow my play down. This won't change that.

Scanning pokestops is only really good when you have a lot of other stops/gyms near, which in that case they're great overall.

yea you get more items from gyms i assume if you have a gold badge, (only tried it with my home gym so not sure about a new gym or things like that.)

Now if it was just 3 scans for lvl 1, 5 scans for lvl 2 and 15 scans for lvl 3 with the same rewards then it wouldnt be as bad but still somewhat of an inconvenience. They should give an extra item based upon the level like you said. Also maybe fixing it to where if you power up a stop or gym 5 times in a given day youll get 20 poké balls as an extra reward for doing so

You know, Niantic sure is going through a lot of trouble trying to get people to do these AR mapping tasks. First, they try bribing us to do their work for them with the mediocre rewards, now they're trying again with these Powered up Pokestops. Here's a newsflash for Niantic: Nobody cares. Most players I know do not even turn on the AR function. And if all this is just to catch Kecleon, whenever they release it, we're still not going to care enough to use it. And if they make us turn it on in order to catch it, guess what? We're going to turn it off afterwards because we don't care. Niantic needs to stop wasting time and money trying to develop this function that none of us care about. If Niantic wants us to do their work for them, they need to pay us with rewards that are worth the hassle.

What a great video, thanks for confirming what we all suspected - I could see this as a feature in a high traffic area on a com day, but totally worthless otherwise.
The only other time this might be worth it is on CD. If you are with a large group you could power up a pokestop with just a few scans each. Do this all on a grind route just before it starts. Other than that this really is a horrible feature. If they made it permanently powered up than yeah, but not for a few days
I scan the ground. I slowly sway left to right or pace back and fourth. It looks like I am just texting on my phone or watching a video.
I have two gyms right next to each other; one can been powered up, the other cannot. After doing a few spins of each. It seems that the powered up gym gives bonus items similar to team bonus (2-4 extra items).
I could stand there and scan 25 times or I could just walk 100 meters in either direction to spin other stops in my area for the same affect. Scanning takes WAY too long - especially if you are doing this solo. If they decreased it to like 2 scans per level, MAYBE I would take the time, but otherwise it was a complete waste of my time.

ever since they added this I have been getting way more AR mapping tasks. 6 pokestops all asked me to scan one place... I wish mapping tasks were only on the place that needs mapping.
I remember when first leaks were appearing of this feature. I was very hyped for it but when it actually came, it was more disappointing then Cyberpunk 2077 lunch ...

The only thing I got from doing this at a gym, was stares and questions of why am I videoing a church in the afternoon? You tell them pokemon go they will not know what you are talking about, or they will think you are lying.
I think we all know that it's Niantic trying to gather more information/data without sending their own people out. They tried but failed miserably

Cuz a flashlight and scanning at night isn't creepy at all...I don't scan so far the rewards aren't worth it and it's too much like work.

I think required scans are reduced, at least I have now 15 scans to lvl 3. Overall it should be reduced. For example if you reach lvl 3 one time then next time you need only 20 scans, 15, 10 etc. At the end if there are lot of "Scanners" they will still have a lot of data and peope might actually do it correctly not scan their boots all the time.

15 min I can easily visit 7 to 9 new pokestops and catch all pokemons there .
You can only power-up pokestops with the AR MAPPING field research tasks, indicated at the top of the screen

During Com day on Saterday when it was snowing badly, I went to a Gym lvl 3 that had 2 stops and parked my car there. I added lures to both stops and stayed there for 3 hours. I think it was worth it having the lvl 3 gym since I'd get more pokeballs back with it and team bonus. I had a very stable income of pokeballs and could keep going for a long time. But yeah, I think that's the only time I think would be worth leveling it to 3 other than living on it.
If it would last a week or 2 and would downgrade by 1 level, then perhaps.

While doing this noticed if you move you camera soo fast to make the video completely blurry the MB needed to uploaded the scan is half the amount needed to upload
I did this the other day in my home town... only thing I notice was gyms giving more items at time.. almost felt like doing the daily spin of the day everytime

on gyms I have an at home gym and when I powered it up to only level two it was giving me like 5+ items today I'm going to power up to level three and going to make it my own team then spin it for the seven day streak and I'm going to like 90 items
Once Niantic can reimburse me for the obscene amount of data use I might consider it but otherwise absolutely not.
I don’t have a problem with scanning. Scanning helps others, and it doesn’t take to long!
