    Heh. The definition of Peranakan is wrong.
    There are Indian Peranakans (Chitty), Eurasian Peranakans (Kristang), Chinese Peranakans (Baba-Nyonyas), and Arab Peranakans (Jawi Pekans).
    You quoted that “Peranakans are the descendants of Chinese immigrants....”
    That’s a fundamental error in definition.
    Someone can be Peranakan but not Baba-Nyonya.

      But it is generally accepted that peranakan term mean peranakan Tionghwa since they form the largest group of peranakan. so I don't think she is wrong
      peranakan Portuguese is kristang

    • @henrylee2393
      @henrylee2393 6 років тому

      Ragingwire High Peranakan Chinese form the larger group but it does not mean it represents all Peranakans, to the extent that they define ‘Peranakans are Chinese immigrants....’.
      It is like saying ‘Singaporeans are Chinese immigrants who....’ or ‘Americans are white people who....’.
      The Kristangs also had mixed culture and race from the Dutch, British, and India during to different eras of colonialism in Melaka. Hence it is more inclusive to call them Eurasian Peranakans, while acknowledging the primary Portuguese origin that differentiates them.

      Ken Arok They are not wrong. The video mentioned these “immigrants who came to the Malay Archipelago”.
      Indonesia is part of Malay Archipalego.
      The author is just stating that in Malaysia and Singapore, the Chinese Peranakans are referred to as Baba-Nyonya. This is a matter of fact.
      In Indonesia, the Chinese Peranakans, in Tangerang (for example), are called Tiong Benteng/ Cina Benteng. Not Baba-Nyonya.
      The grave error the author made was to claim all Peranakans are chinese, and erasing all other races. It is like saying ‘Singaporeans are descendants of Chinese immigrants’.
      I’m still awaiting them to make correction to the video.

    • @Ragingwire1
      @Ragingwire1 6 років тому +1

      That is incorrect Cina benteng is set apart from majority of peranakan . They are almost fully assimilated and poor though proud of their heritage.They are the oldest since their forefather come around 18th century. But the majority of peranakan in Indo come from people who immigrate in 19th century. And they called themselves Baba and Nyonya for sure Just like Baba in Malaysia they called each other by their nick name like Nya Cambul or Nya Gemok. for men Ba besar etc So the term Baba and Nyonya is used

    • @henrylee2393
      @henrylee2393 6 років тому +1

      Ragingwire High Hence I mentioned that “in Tangerang (for example), the Chinese Peranakans...”. The statement was exclusively for the Tangerang Chinese Peranakan community.
      I was not referring to the whole Indonesia.
      My main point is that the author is not wrong in her definition regarding their settlement in Malay Archipalego.
      Malay Archipalego includes modern day indonesia.

      But I can remember very well our English teacher would purposely bring a thick Oxford dictionary to check upon the English vocabularies that he used in his essays! After that only we learnt that his father is actually an English professor working in University Sains Malaysia (damn o.O) He read original version of Harry Potter novels which basically every book series is thick as a contemporary Oxford dictionary... and his essay, I couldn't understand one third of his first page... holy brainy guy

Mereka pandai membawa diri di tempat baru, menghormati orang Melayu, Mereka berkahwin dengan orang Melayu. Mereka berbudaya Melayu. Jiwa Mereka Dan pemikiran Mereka di ubah kepada kemelayuan apabila Mereka tinggal di Melaka. Mereka tidak membawa kecinaan Mereka apabila Mereka di Tanah Melayu. Itulah penyebab moyang Mereka boleh hidup aman Damai Dan harmonis dengan orang Melayu di Tanah Melayu. (1) "Effort" - plural is "effort", not "efforts"; (2) "anyway" is one word, not two; (3) "thicked skin" is an expression that doesn't exist; (4) you should always capitalize "i", it's "I"; (5) You salute someone FOR being something; (6) After so many years still with this "baba excuse," not "excuse baba;" (7) acting skill "sucks," not "sulk"; (8) self-declared (must be hyphenated) perfectionist; (9) "Wah!" is not English, it should be "wow"; (10) He has been in Channel 8 FOR so many years, still talkS like "sotong"; (11) and HE IS STILL SPEAKING Mandarin like a student GASPING (not grasping) for words. You have just written a few sentences, yet in every sentence, there are at least 800 grammatical mistakes. How many years have you been learning English? After so many years, you are still writing English like an illiterate. I really salute you for being so thick skin!
