"HOPPY" - short film by Amber Alexander

- During my senior year at chapman university, I wrote and created this short film as my thesis project with the help of my wonderful classmates in the television writing and production program. I'm SO proud and so thankful to everyone who worked on this!!!
I began writing this short script in September of 2022. In March 2023, my script was chosen to be produced as a result of a class vote. With barely 1 month of preproduction time, we shot the entire film over the course of one weekend in April 2023 in Chino Hills, Laguna, and Orange, California.
The entire bunny house was BUILT BY HAND by our production designer Sarah Kaiser and her art team WITHIN A WEEK. Such an impressive feat. The amount of detail that went into this build is insane & I am forever in awe!!!
Thank you to Caitlyn Phu for taking on nearly every job position on this project. As our editor, art director, set builder, costume designer, BTS photographer, and my friend throughout the entire process-- this entire production is thanks to you!!!
Thank you to Pono Van Dusen for being the BEST Juniper there could be, and thank you to The Brothers Vicious (Caden Bartlett and Pono Van Dusen) for joining forces to compose the most beautiful score I've ever heard. Watching the two of you work together was otherworldly. I eagerly wait for The Brothers Vicious to bless us again!!! :)
Thank you to Sean Lindsey for masterfully shooting and coloring this film. Having you as our cinematographer was essential to this production, and I am so lucky to have worked with you in this capacity. You're the mastermind behind it all!!!
To the entire Hoppy crew, thank you so so much. I cannot express how inspiring it was to work with you, and I am so grateful to you all. Everyone truly brought so much to the table, and it was amazing to end college with this production.

Amber as a film student, this absolutely reminded me of a "Wes Anderson" movie. The vibe, color, music and style is similar and you absolutely did a great job with this short film :) 🙏🏻🎬📽
When Juniper’s dad is listing off the things they need to find food, he jokingly lists “a little bit of love in your heart” as the last item. Which is ironic considering the lack of love in his heart is what’s preventing him from getting food, and juniper’s love for his mom helps him to forage. Maybe the themes of prey, predator, and food are metaphorical? The mother was presumably eaten, the father eats others, but Juniper is self sustaining?

The slow fade and sudden tranistion into the emenories of the mother are so well excuted Amber! I love the little hop detail on the jacket.
to me this film speaks volumes about how you feel maybe growing up asian and white. as a filipino american who grew up in the south i really feel this and felt incredibly emotional watching this. done with such grace and direction. great job Amber!!!!

I've been wanting to say for the longest time how much Pono looks like Ronnie Alonte. He's a Filipino actor and their resemblance is uncanny. They're practically identical twins!!

not to put my own personal experinces onto your film (which is amazing!) but I'm mixed race and the dad trying to protect his son from what happened to the mom feels like when a parent holds a part of your culture (or all of it actually) away from you so you don't fall victim to bullying or hatred because of it, not sure if that was something you were trying to convey but its what i felt and i loved it
I hope you keep releasing short films, I loved it :) great work!

i dont usually comment on videos but wow i love this!!! i really enjoy reading everyones interpretations of this piece! personally i interpreted it as the father projecting a traditional career path onto his son, in a state of survival which feel unsatisfying as hes in pursuit of the nutritional value of another animal (validation from others?) while his son is happy to eating berries which are lower in caloric value but allows him to see the beauty of his landscape (is this ambers nutrition background coming into play? :0) . his mom a symbol for the childlike safety and support in his passions as when you're a child you're told you can do whatever you like. the father also representing the constant pressure in society to get ahead of other rather than co--exist with them "we need to become the predators so we are not prey". i didnt word this very elonquently but overall i interpreted as a broader critique on capitalism and the struggles of pursuing a non-conventional career path! can't wait to see more!
I love how this can be interpreted in so many ways , truly a masterpiece, the colors , music, the quietness , it’s like so cool, first I thought maybe it would be a scary short film, but it was a one that made you sit and think, great job Amber , we are so proud of you🫂🧚♂️you did amazing dear , I’m excited for your beautiful future🤍💗 take care

this was very lovely to watch, you and your team did a beautiful job! Hop was incredibly frustrating to watch. His insistence on being the impossible and his selfish pursuit of his own well-being, those are one of the scariest type of people. His disregard for his own son, talkign to Hop is like talking to a brick wall. Juniper doesnt speak and when he does, its to be heard, and only to be shut down again. Juniper's actions speak the loudest, and Hop is blind to it all. Sharing fruit in some cultures is a demonstration of love and affection and the ending scene where Hop eats one to then only shut the door, reiterating how he is going hunting again, how cruel. Junipers sits in silence but the emotion is tangible. You did such a sublime job Amber, I'm proud of your work!

Wow this was great! It feels like Wes Anderson combined with yorgos lanthimos. Really getting “the lobster” vibes and it has that same happy sad feel of Wes Anderson. The colors are really intriguing as well as the score. Great work!

Amber this is literally such a nice little short film, I am so glad that you decided to share it with us all:) Even though you only had a month to create it, this lack of time truly can't be seen, everything is so perfect from the colouring through the music to the locations! Hoping that you are also satisfied with it, you should absolutely be proud of yourself, and we are all proud of you♡
Also congrats on graduating!!! I also finished up my Bachelor's this year, tho I have to do Master's too, but it feels nice to see others closing up a chapter too, when I did the same~
