Listen to Syd's voice when he sings "Soon after dark Emily cries, gazing through trees in sorrow, hardly a sound till tommorow" and "crept on a river for ever and ever". So so beautiful, emotional and brilliant. I know David's an awesome singer with a very smooth and powerful voice, but nothing will ever beat Syd's vocals in this song. He can really FEEL the song when he's singing, know what I mean?
This was the first single I ever bought. Watching this video makes me feel ancient, but I'm glad I was young at a time when there were such great bands and so much brilliant music!
There has never been a song written like this before or since. Utterley unique and a great song. I even named my baby Daughter Emily, partly in tribute to this song. Love it!!
+Coy Chimera ... especially when swiftly backed up with the audio assault of Interstellar Overdrive...not sure how some of the neighbours felt about Floyd played at ear splitting levels at 8.30 on a weekday morning... Peace to you!
This was the first 45rpm single I bought downstairs in Woolworths Birimgham New Street. I/ve always loved Pink Floyd and bought all of their albums. Have always loved their sole guitar pieces. They/ve bought a lot of pleasure to my life, thank you. xxxx
It's 1977 and I'm 17-all big hair and attitude on my Suzuki AP50 Sports Moped. A weekend in Shrewsbury with my old mate, John, hanging out in dingy biker pubs with great juke boxes. This song is imprinted on my mind to this day.
The vocal melodies in this song are absolutely wonderful. I can't understand how they managed to make nursery rhymes so eerie and somewhat unsetting to listen to.
I LOVE this song! So so much! And I LOVE the man who introduced me to it. He is a gem. I hope you all fall in love many, many a time with the one you love, and with life, wherever you may be. It is a blessing in disguise, yes it is! :D
Syd was a mysterious character, a beautiful dreamer for all time... not insane... just sensitive... Let's all enjoy his legacy, what a great body of work!!
Bricks In The Wall still plays this song in concert. If you live in Texas, Louisiana, NM, Arkansas, you know how awesome they are. If you don't, sux to be u.
Wow.There are early days with David on board. Last scene when they dance in circle is just fantastic. On this clip we can see how many joys band had at this time. Unfortunately - these times never come back...
the story behind this song... Syd took a hit of LSD and tripped out so much that he fled into the woods, he had a vision of a girl named emily there where he spent the night. He returned to the studio and wrote this song... amazing piece of music and I can't help but think of syd when ever i hear this song and how sad it was that he never got to reach his potential... who knows what kind of music syd, waters and gilmour could have made if all 3 were together.
hah, i love Nick's little dance so much, and Roger with his rifle guitar, and i love Rick's hat thing pointing to Nick's dance, i also love how akward David is acting, this is an awesome video, awesome song
i think this was one of the first songs i heard really in my life and aware then ;-) Never forgot this, and not actually being a Pink Floyd Fan, they surely gave me a hint towards I was musically travelling ;-) Fantastic Song! Thank You for sharing!
The song was reportedly about a girl named Emily, whom Barrett claimed he saw while sleeping in the woods after taking a hallucinogenic drug. "See Emily Play" is also known as "Games for May," and sometimes "Free Games for May," after a free concert in which Barrett's Pink Floyd performed. It was written by original frontman Syd Barrett and recorded on May 23, 1967.
Such a stark contrast to their later work. It's like listening to Love Me Do by The Beatles. Of course, in this example, it makes sense because even The Beatles changed with time and Love Me Do sounds weird next to Glass Onion or Helter Skelter. Still... I grew up watching The Wall and hear THAT side of Pink Floyd, so hearing this is....surreal! I never heard this until a few days ago, when I found their greatest hits on Spotify. I think they did this on purpose... The first track is Hey You, the second track is See Emily Play, and the third and fourth tracks are The Happiest Days of Our Lives/Another Brick in the Wall Part II. The contrast between those songs will make your head implode!
I knew Pink Floyd listening to "See Emily Play" and "A Saucerful of Secrets"... so when I listened to The Wall I found it very weird... Now I can't even dare to listen to their last albums because I think I'd find them bad. I got attached to their early sounds and I think I'll keep on listening to THE Pink Floyd.
I feel the same too, only I just forced myself to buy the piper at the gates of dawn and it really surprised me. I can't stop listening to their early stuff now.
saw them in early 67 in chalk farm i think....but the music was way over my head at the time....i was used to dave clark five and dave clark 5 these were not...but love them now
Larry, that's a very humble thing to admit. But, ya know what? The Dave Clark 5 were AWESOME!! Weren't they? I think I'll go listen to them now, thanks for the reminder. DC5 woo hoo!
What a band, so many eras and styles. I like Floyd's work with Syd, and yes they struggled without him for some time. Animals; DSotM, and early work, are my favorites.
BillieJoeIsASexGod1 - "This song is fucking uderrated!!!!!" How the fuck is it underated? There's over a thousand comments here alone mainly praising it & it's been regularly played on the radio all over the world for nearly 50 years!
The track that introduced me to Pink Floyd. And now I watch her play every day ! How the circle comes to full turn, yet continues unabaited. Glorious Emily !.
I strongly like this Floyd era, the early years, best. It seems to me, to be the truest psych, even more than 13th Floor Elevators; and others from 1966-1968. This song, Emily, is wonderful. Later Floyd is certainly fine too.
Nobody is mentioning the fact that this song was referenced in "High Hopes." The last line of that song comes from this song (Forever And Ever). Anyway, this is my favorite psychedelic Pink Floyd song(or is it?)
When I was a kid I had three 7" singles of my own all bought by the parents, and this was one of them (How I got that past them I'll never know). Many year later I bought "Relics" so I got it again! Wish I still had them both now :( But, what the hell, I had them, and I can still replay them any time from memory!!
This is just partially true. Of course there was commercial 'easy' music (Monkees, 1910, Lemon Pipers, Herman's Hermits....) back then just like today. But the time span between 1965 and 1970 had a concentration of music gods and great albums that has never been matched, the other decades produced great music too, but never at such a pace. 1977-80 was quite close. there's some decent music today, but masterpieces are very rare, while back then there were like 5-6 per year.
Pink Floyd is on the cover of Rolling Stone! I think they did these promos in Holland or France with David. I think they did this with Syd for Top of the Pops, but those were destroyed long ago. A song they rarely did live.
@ThatGroupOfKids The one with the hat is Rick, indeed. The one with the bass and light jacket is Roger, the one doing the air drums (love it) is Nick Mason, of course; and the one in black, with the white telecaster is Gilmour. I think this was one of the videos they did for Belgian tv, during the time when Syd Barrett was almost being dismissed from the band (so he didn't participate in those videos). It would be great if all five of them could have been there....
i don't want to be rude, but it doesn't make sense to upload a video of See Emily Play sung by Syd Barrett with not Syd Barrett in it. In fact you can see Wright, Mason, Waters and Gilmour. I know it's none of your fault but it is nasty towards Syd who wrote and sang the song. Pink Floyd would't exist perhaps without Syd Barrett
True ..... he made the band in the first place! They even didn't recognize him after all these years when he entered the studio all in a sudden.....something what the members of PF still bothers and regrets!
M.A. Schols He didn't "make" the band. He was a founding member and certainly played a huge part in their very early years. However, he fucked up way too much, and the rest of the band just got sick of it. He became too big of a burden and would not allow the rest of the members to progress any further. He had no one to blame but himself. It's sad to see such talent go down the shitter.
LostInThought He DID make the band! 1967-68 it was ALL Syd! What are you talking about? Without him the later 'Yawn Fests' that you clearly love best would never have existed.
LostInThought They weren't Psychedelic after Saucerful Of Secrets. If you think they were you're dumber than I thought!! You don't know what Psychedelia is really do you. You don't know much at all really. I'm 62 and was probably watching them before you were born.
this song shows what he had the potential to be... what he objected to... and what he would later deny to live a reclusive life and become all the greater because he is shrowded in mystery.
Promise you'll always keep listening to this. It's everlasting. Nothing else is real, but this music. Kill your mind. Focus only on this. Look for all the songs. Outside there is nothing. You should be happy; but also sad. Don't compare anything to this.
I love old music videos, they literally were just a walk in the park. Just pop down there and record some footage of you messing around X3 Love this song
Actually, this videos was a lip-syncing promo that was released by Floyd in 68. That is in fact Gilmour. Barrett didn't go to Belgium with the rest of Floyd in 68, so when they made these videos, they just had Gilmour lip-synch all of Barrett's lines.
exact! I can live with the views of others. Do not affect me ... In fact, I give atenci'on, understand them and respect. Especially when it comes to musical tastes. I fully understand that thousands of people take their favorite band Pink Floyd -- I also like them, and bought some records.--part of my collection... i also understand and does not affect me at all some others detest, music that I like. Otherwise it'll be a sort of fundamentalist about musical tastes ... not silly?
Syd Barrett - Lead Vocals, Slide Guitar, Guitars Richard Wright - Keyboards, Organ and Backing Vocals Roger Waters - Bass Guitar and Backing Vocals Nick Mason - Drums and Percussion. Just the four!

He can really FEEL the song when he's singing, know what I mean?
Back when bands actually had fun making music videos.
yeah isn't it nice to just see them goofing around. they're hilarious
Love it!!
Walking to school as dad's blowing up the speakers with this one...could still hear it from miles up the road...fucking quality
That sounds amazing
+Coy Chimera ... especially when swiftly backed up with the audio assault of Interstellar Overdrive...not sure how some of the neighbours felt about Floyd played at ear splitting levels at 8.30 on a weekday morning...
Peace to you!
Steven Champion ?..can he be my dad too?
Watch at 75% speed.
This was the first 45rpm single I bought downstairs in Woolworths Birimgham New Street. I/ve always loved Pink Floyd and bought all of their albums. Have always loved their sole guitar pieces. They/ve bought a lot of pleasure to my life, thank you. xxxx

I can't understand how they managed to make nursery rhymes so eerie and somewhat unsetting to listen to.
My dad used to play this song for me when I was like, 3.
(My name is Emily)
This video is like 40 years old and still's a better video than Hot Problems...Syd Barrett was a freaking genius!
Nick Mason's miming of playing the drums is a damn sight more animated than his drumming ever was.
I LOVE this song! So so much! And I LOVE the man who introduced me to it. He is a gem. I hope you all fall in love many, many a time with the one you love, and with life, wherever you may be. It is a blessing in disguise, yes it is! :D
Playing cricket with a guitar, now that is rock and roll got to love the vibrance of the 60s.
This is real music!
Syd was a true legend. This was the best period of Pink Floyd! This is real art! Just because it's special!
Ahhh this song is just amazing!
No words can describe it actually...
i was 15 years old ,and crazi fhore pinkfloyd.til now 54 years old.
this is a great song
So brilliance is one of my favorite pieces of music I love it.
Emily ❤ One the best songs of the best band ever
hah, i love Nick's little dance so much, and Roger with his rifle guitar, and i love Rick's hat thing pointing to Nick's dance, i also love how akward David is acting, this is an awesome video, awesome song
Oh my fucking god, they are all so adorable. I love how much Roggie's getting into it so much, while Rick is just radiating extreme cuteness :)
i think this was one of the first songs i heard really in my life and aware then ;-)
Never forgot this, and not actually being a Pink Floyd Fan, they surely gave me a hint towards I was musically travelling ;-) Fantastic Song! Thank You for sharing!

If you were there through the times, and development it all hung together and was fluent. There was the Sid Barret break off of course,
I knew Pink Floyd listening to "See Emily Play" and "A Saucerful of Secrets"... so when I listened to The Wall I found it very weird... Now I can't even dare to listen to their last albums because I think I'd find them bad. I got attached to their early sounds and I think I'll keep on listening to THE Pink Floyd.

Yes! All the interesting stuff was done early on. Way before they became a blues band with a million lightbulbs and a box of fireworks!
The Beatles started as kids, playing kids pop music, then, as Jimmy would say, they got experienced. Pink Floyd started out experienced.
One of my favourite Floyd tunes, very playful and dare I say it happy
i can not help but laugh hysterically at nick playing the drums in this omg
this song still rocks out, nobody would even try to create something like this today... they dont have it in them
0:50 Wright possessed Mason
what a brilliant single this was...arnold layne too of course.....
I am 16 and this is my favorite song,
I wish that i could have heard Pink Floyd perform this live
saw them in early 67 in chalk farm i think....but the music was way over my head at the time....i was used to dave clark five and dave clark 5 these were not...but love them now
Larry, that's a very humble thing to admit. But, ya know what? The Dave Clark 5 were AWESOME!! Weren't they? I think I'll go listen to them now, thanks for the reminder. DC5 woo hoo!
dynodish yep loved the dc5..dynodish....mike smith brill
:) I live in chalk farm. Wish I was around to see Pink Floyd back then
What a band, so many eras and styles. I like Floyd's work with Syd, and yes they struggled without him for some time. Animals; DSotM, and early work, are my favorites.
Well said! We can't spend all day every day listening to one favourite song...
i still luv the floyd band! even without clearlight
One of my most favourite songs ever! Remembering some really great peyote in high school listening to early floyd.
Iam still listening to this shit at 65. Gotta to be good or was this early brainwash. Tom W.
hell I will be 69 next month and am still listening
BillieJoeIsASexGod1 - "This song is fucking uderrated!!!!!"
How the fuck is it underated? There's over a thousand comments here alone mainly praising it & it's been regularly played on the radio all over the world for nearly 50 years!
has anyone else got this nostalgic and a bit melancholic feeling when playing this song?
The track that introduced me to Pink Floyd. And now I watch her play every day ! How the circle comes to full turn, yet continues unabaited. Glorious Emily !.
Just recently discovered this song and I love.
This is so goofy and I love it.
Sid is one of englands great children's author's, on a par with Kenneth Graham A.A.Milne and lewis Carroll.
I strongly like this Floyd era, the early years, best. It seems to me, to be the truest psych, even more than 13th Floor Elevators; and others from 1966-1968. This song, Emily, is wonderful. Later Floyd is certainly fine too.
totally agree, I really prefer the psychedelic pop style of their 60's stuff over their sometimes slower, 70's music.
Nobody is mentioning the fact that this song was referenced in "High Hopes." The last line of that song comes from this song (Forever And Ever). Anyway, this is my favorite psychedelic Pink Floyd song(or is it?)
The icy air is a nice touch that probably wasn't meant, and what an overpass! It's touching how good of a manufactured outdoor scene they picked.
Notice how it is actually David Gilmour in this video, not Syd.
Just about to say that... There is no Syd in this video... Must have been right after he stopped with the band. That's all Dave right there
@Kvyn Gmbyr Rick Wright
Lol I love Nick's little dance at 0:47.
May Briana It's called acid mate
When I was a kid I had three 7" singles of my own all bought by the parents, and this was one of them (How I got that past them I'll never know). Many year later I bought "Relics" so I got it again!
Wish I still had them both now :(
But, what the hell, I had them, and I can still replay them any time from memory!!
Im laughing so hard at Nick
It's sad that so many musical geniuses go crazy ( Sid, Peter Green and so many others ) They must feel so alone.
Early Floyd on psychs, really far out....
Really funny, beautiful, fantastic... There's a kind of innocence in this clip they lost little by little... They were like kids at the time, lol.
Esta es mi canción preferida de Pink Floyd...magnifica!!!
I love Nick's air drums haha!
This video is from 1968, Syd Barret is not in this videos, but Gilmour is in the video even when he was not in the band when they made this song
This is just partially true. Of course there was commercial 'easy' music (Monkees, 1910, Lemon Pipers, Herman's Hermits....) back then just like today. This was always my favourite from Pink Floyd, has to be played super loud
Must be one of the best songs ever.
Pink Floyd is on the cover of Rolling Stone!
I think they did these promos in Holland or France with David. I think they did this with Syd for Top of the Pops, but those were destroyed long ago. A song they rarely did live.
the best BAND of all's time's, God bless FLOYD
Turned on , tuned in to this in1967 as a young hippy chic.
we will never forget syd
Who?
Jonny.B. Gone xD

It would be great if all five of them could have been there....
i wish i was there playing around with them...would have been a dream for me ;)
how cute they look
floyd has the best backing vocals ever
This cool Pink Floyd song reached #134 on the Billboard "Bubbling Under the Hot 100" chart in 1967.
I always have & I first heard it in around 1969.
i don't want to be rude, but it doesn't make sense to upload a video of See Emily Play sung by Syd Barrett with not Syd Barrett in it. In fact you can see Wright, Mason, Waters and Gilmour. True ..... he made the band in the first place! They even didn't recognize him after all these years when he entered the studio all in a sudden.....something what the members of PF still bothers and regrets!
yes, the've been feeling guilty since they dropped him
M.A. Schols
He didn't "make" the band. He was a founding member and certainly played a huge part in their very early years. However, he fucked up way too much, and the rest of the band just got sick of it. I love those cars in the background that are classics now.
Geniali! Un gruppo sempre fantastico. Legendari
not that i have anything aganst this band, but this particular song sounds SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO like the beatles...
When Syd Barrett was a member I liked them best, but do love Pink Floyd!
Nick's clear drum kit is the shit. So far ahead of their time
nobody can say this is not a beatle song.awesome!
this song shows what he had the potential to be... what he objected to... and what he would later deny to live a reclusive life and become all the greater because he is shrowded in mystery.
Promise you'll always keep listening to this.
It's everlasting.
Nothing else is real, but this music.
Kill your mind.
Focus only on this.
Look for all the songs.
Outside there is nothing.
You should be happy; but also sad.
Don't compare anything to this.
why do I love Syd?
yaaaaaaaaap
+Henoud Samya Cos he showed you a saucerful of secrets
+jigsaw6665487 Yes it is, Mr.Righteous. I was only answering the question
+Henoud Samya he started the Band .
he is a fucking genius , the first PF's album, the best one ever
¡Es hermosa!, ¡me encanta!
This will be my favourite song forever.
ke cancion tan increible
cada ke la escucho experimento una sencion inexplicable
:O
awesome song ,nice mercedes in the background too.
This might be the greatest psychedelic song ever created.
@bagzie I bought this single along with cream "Strange Brew" in May 1967 whilst
I was staying in a caravan park in Bognor Regis
I love this song!
Pink Floyd rules
how is this not the most awesome song ever? and video??
I love old music videos, they literally were just a walk in the park. Just pop down there and record some footage of you messing around X3
Love this song
this is adorable they're acting like the beatles
Actually, this videos was a lip-syncing promo that was released by Floyd in 68. That is in fact Gilmour. Barrett didn't go to Belgium with the rest of Floyd in 68, so when they made these videos, they just had Gilmour lip-synch all of Barrett's lines.
Ah Syd Barrett does remind me a lot of the mad hatter here for some reason. That's never a bad thing! Shine on you Crazy Diamond.
One of my wife and I's fave songs by the Floyd!check out MAROONED-Excellent solo by David!
Otherwise it'll be a sort of fundamentalist about musical tastes ... not silly?
Nick Mason owns this video
@DeafFret
I think it adds to the song. I can't imagine this song recorded in a more modern, "professional" way.
i love the nick's dance at 0:47
C'mon, that dance is simply legendary.,
Syd Barrett - Lead Vocals, Slide Guitar, Guitars
Richard Wright - Keyboards, Organ and Backing Vocals
Roger Waters - Bass Guitar and Backing Vocals
Nick Mason - Drums and Percussion.
Just the four!
I know in the 60s they had more of that Beatles type psychadelic sound and later it evolved and eventually in the 80s they even sounded kind of like Pop music(see Learning to Fly)
Thats just brilliant by Pink Floyd, you can't really classify what genre of music they are
