Music by Rachel Portman
For over 22 years, life for the unassuming John May (an indelible performance from the extraordinary Eddie Marsan) has been his work for the local council in South London, finding the next of kin for those in his community who have passed away alone. But in this age of 'efficiency', John's meticulousness and care is no longer deemed necessary, and he is abruptly made redundant. John is left with one assignment: a search for the relatives of an elderly neighbour, Billy Stoke.
There are very few movies that stay with you forever...this is one of them.
Well said my friend
Thinking of it often during corona with so many souls dying in enforced isolation.
@@mothratemporalradio517 So sad😔😔
@@cassandrakerouac7606 ❤️
so sad and also so beautiful, because it's redemptive.
Putting a break in the text because it contains "spoilers" for anyone who hasn't yet seen the film (just in case)
Edit: this ended up being a super long spontaneous contemplation on the film! Sorry for the length, i was trying to articulate the film's meaning to me personally in light of the painful denouement.
All of the invisible effort by our protagonist which was rewarded only by being discarded.. that's heartbreaking.. but in the end, the sad end he faced, is an end we all face.. and the film shows us, his efforts which were seemingly in vain throughout much of the film weren't without meaning at all. The same soul who paid respects to forgotten souls was not himself forgotten, even as he was overlooked by people he helped in life..He lost his life but was honoured, in a process as invisible to others as his efforts were.
This film has so many things to teach us about the value of the human soul, and its ability to touch others, regardless of the person's circumstance.. And how our own effort or lack thereof matters when other people lose their lives. And it does so without adherence to any specific religion..
I've watched it more than once. The soundtrack alone is stupendous (the composer Rachel Portman is the writer director Uberto Pasolini',# own wife)
Somehow a few years ago, i ended up in a little internet rabbithole looking at the history of "still life" painting - which includes the concept of "vanitas", seemingly morbid concept which encourages is to embrace each day as though it was our last in respect of the ephemerality of life. And i think i found connections that led back to the ancient Egyptians (the first known examples of "still life" painting).
The Egyptians would provide paintings and votive offerings of food in tombs.. And the idea is around the soul being accompanied to the afterlife These offerings were thought to help nourish the soul during its process of passing over. They were a means of the living to "look after" the soul of a deceased person.
i remember looking back at the film and its focus on simple moments concerning food and drink. The pie, the hot chocolate, the drink shared on the steps with the homeless guys, the protagonist being a creature of habit trying new things being represented by trying new fare as he went along. i now noticed the way the camera contemplated each meal in a sort of "still life" snapshot.
i saw the film in a new and different way, kind of "meta" after i realised the "still life" tableaus throughout the structure. Our story concerns this man's huge and redeeming efforts to help those souls who passed over in ensuring their rememberance, an act of pure kindness, but this is actually also the story of how he will himself come to pass on. 💧
And those last moments of food and drink, and him beginning to live each day as if it was his last, are steps along the way.
It's terribly painful because we see the very blue his eyes take on, his happiness, right before the opportunity he wanted and grabbed with both hands had the chance to come into play in his life. He was so close to companionship.
And because in having brought everyone else together, he himself was overlooked, by the very one he had wanted to be with in life.
That broke my heart.
And still yet - he wasn't alone, in the end, and his efforts to help others were not in vain or meaningless. For him, what went around came around.
So it's very painful and yet there's a redemptive comfort that can be found there.
After this when i rewatched the film i thought of him as a soul on a journey and connected those simple studies of the food he ate with the ancient human history that can be found on Egyptian tombs and perhaps even a sort of Last Supper of sorts. In connection with that idea of vanitas, which gained popularity in European paintings (still life) a number of centuries ago.
That concept basically tells us that whatever our station in life, whatever wealth we have or possessions we own - we are all mortal.
i LOVE that this film is caring towards people on their own. Again, this idea we come into the world alone (unless a twin!) and leave it alone. i love that it honours the lives of such people and through our protagonist seeks to offer them dignity.
i probably haven't rewatched for a few years but it has an element of "Eleanor Rigby" by the Beatles. But instead of only asking where "all the lonely people" come from or belong, the film does a few things: it shows us that it could happen to any of us, regardless of our current relationships. And it provides a salve: it honours the lives of people who have no one ❤️ in such a beautiful and evocative way it makes it one of the most moving pieces of art I've ever seen. i think it's a masterpiece.
I'll never forget our protagonist leafing through the photo album full of faces captured in happier times; facing his own reflection in the windows of the flat of the deceased man opposite (foreshadowing); and his eulogy to the lady whose stockings still hung in her greyish flat, her love of her cat and red lipstick. 💄🐈
The horrendous manager making him redundant; his sleuthing quest on the train (a journey we don't yet know the ultimate destination of when we watch); and drinking with "hobos" who say that as men all they really ever want in life is a woman they could sit in comfortable silence with (our protagonist later comes so close to closing that unreachable distance). The trying of new things.
The writing, directing and music gives this character of a type and occupation that is assumed to be terribly dull and not worth contemplating, a single middle aged man of average appearance engaged in bureaucratic rote work, so much powerful humanity and interest.
i probably shouldn't overlook the jubilant wee against the boss's car. Teehee.
The end is so painful but sometimes the craft of storytelling, for the storyteller, might even begin with the ending. Of which, of course, even the lie-down in the cemetery as pictured in the thumbnail for the clip is a foreshadowing of what's to come at the end of this hero's journey.
i honestly think it's a life changing film in the sense it didn't change anything about my life personally but it certainly shook up my perceptions in a very powerful way. i think it's one of the things that kind of rearranged certain assumptions about things that appear "ordinary" in a way which we tend to equate as being "less than". This film reshuffles that deck of cards and rearranges the way the hand plays out, so that ordinary souls can be both seen and honoured as extra-ordinary, larger than life.
And even the act of having a hot chocolate as radical!
Or a very simple meal as being just perfect.
This film tries to tell us that whatever our imperfections, however we are viewed by others, whatever wealth and prowess we may lack, we still fundamentally matter.. And that the same is true of others. It also tells us that regardless of religious beliefs, the act of honouring a human soul after a person passes on matters greatly.
i feel that through this bittersweet redemptive fable, the filmmaker (and all those involved) not only moved me, but taught me something. I'm actually an atheist but there's a sort of wonderful metaphysical aspect to this film connecting the human spirit with the act of memory.
In light of this, listening to Rachel Portman's music is enough to move me to tears.
And i think of this music as music that can comfort people experiencing loss, especially where closure has been difficult.
i send you and those reading my very warmest regards from Australia, where i sit by myself in an armchair during a pandemic lockdown. What i got from this film was to appreciate others, in life and in death alike, regardless of circumstance.
It's probably the most moving film on the human condition I've seen. i think many of us, regardless of our religious beliefs or lack thereof or attitude to death, fear being forgotten as though we had never existed or touched the lives of others at all.
And this film showed me that even if i am an atheist, we can't quantify the human soul, it can't really be reduced to organs alone, and that remembering souls that have passed is a way of honouring something that we all deserve as human beings. We get so many messages to the opposite effect. i think the film captures what it is to be human, it is painful but it has value, both the film and life itself. So when i wish you all the best, it's from the bottom of my heart. ❤️🙏🌻
@@mothratemporalradio517 greetings from Italy and all the best to you😊
This magical film is just underrated. It's the most touching film i've ever seen.
I agree
This is truly one of the most touching movies I've ever seen in my life (and I've seen tons of movies).
I agree
brilliant film
Pure drama. You can find philosophy, hope, love, controversy and irony in this movie. A masterpiece. One of the best dramas I have ever watched.
So happy a friend told me about this film, otherwise I may have never watched it! It is definitely on the list of my favourite films now.
Stunning underrated film for sure. The ending would make the hardest of people choke up.
There's not a wonderful movie without a magnificent soundtrack
A perfect combination! 😉
Film e colonna sonora decisamente toccanti. Delicatezza e sensibilità estreme.
Poesia pura. Da conservare come un libro prezioso.
Film e storia immensi,disperati e profondi.Splendide musiche.Attore immisurabile.Finale meraviglioso e inaspettato
The most beautiful touching movie I have ever seen. The music is beautiful as well.
one of the best movies I have ever seen. Eddie Marsan character is so caring and gentle. My dream man.
this end of this movie make me cry like a baby
It's so heartbreaking the 'twist' at the end when you realize he's like every person he investigated and that there's no one else caring and commited like him to take his case... :'(
Beautiful movie
Whats the name of the movie?
@@yougotnodirtyjamjams_6620 Still Life
Places a bouquet at grave... what an unforgettable film. One of the most atmospheric films I've ever seen.
Absolutely beautiful song; finally after occasionally listening to this for about 3 years, I watched this movie and it has had a profound effect on me. Now it is one of my favourites and I would highly recommend it to anyone, just don't expect to feel the same afterwards.
Tragically poetic
Film delicato e struggente, davvero bellissimo.
Watched this film in the cinema yesterday. One of the year's best films! I was deeply moved! And the score is one of extraordinary beauty!
Uno dei film più dolci di sempre
Si ❣
Un film capolavoro di bellezza e sensibilità
❤🌹❤... very beautiful movie!!
there are people who before thinking about how immortal and powerful they are compared to others, should see this beautiful film ... these people would learn something...
Grazie, grazie, grazie per questo capolavoro! Grande film di rara e grande sensibilità. Nel cuore per sempre.
un capolavoro...un film poetico e toccante. Straordinario
My best favorite movie..so deep and intense. Marsan is perfect..Amazing..
Di una sensibilità inaudita!!!!
Meravigliosa musica.Grazie Rachel.
Rachel Portman always makes the best soundtracks!!
Stunning music and a beautiful accompaniment to a truly wonderful film. Eddie Marsan, as ever, is simply sublime.
un film splendidio, un capolavoro
john may è un uomo speciale
Just a perfect little gem of a film
Struggling to think of a more beautiful piece of music, so fitting for the film
All these hidden emotions , hopes , fears and longings , brought to light by R.Portman´s beautiful score....
Bellissimo film.
Grande film e fantastica colonna sonora.
merveille !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful
wonderful bittersweet film, beautiful music.
Have just watched the movie in cinema... left speechless like everybody... beautiful acting but frighteningly too realistic! Thks for the clip!
Thanks for this moral fable (and enchanting music), which should remind us that, as Pascal said, we are all in the same boat. And thanks to the grace of Eddie Marsan
this movie will touch your heart x
Such beauty, grace and empathy in a human soul. The film and music has made quite an impression on me. Made me think of that Beatles' song..
"All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?"
This is all of us and our loved ones. Care for one another whilst we are alive.
good story, good music, good Mise-en-Scene.
Bellissimo, scende come una foglia in autunno
Güzel bir filmdi insana hayatı sorgulatan müziği ayrı güzellik, tamamlayan.

Such a touching movie and wonderful music. I really like it!
great movie
This is excellent

This movie is a true masterpiece, unfortunately so misknown : I'm proud that it has been directed by he italian Director Mr. Uberto Dall'Onda Pasolini. Please correct above: the name is UBERTO not UMBERTO, thank you.

Bellissimo.
Espectacular. Muchos detalles.Musica increíble
Struggling to find this beautiful piece of music by Rachel Portman somewhere. Is it called "Still Life"? Such a beautiful piece of art both the movie and the music. I watched this on the 13th year anniversary of my father's passing. Needless to say it was touching. Thank you.
Çok ağlattı. Çok dokundu bu film bana.
It's such a beautiful, heart warming, and moving film, so brilliantly executed in every way, thank you to all that made it possible!
Just lovely that's all I can say
The character, theme and music haunt me 😮
I love
The soundtrack is gorgeous, and the main character gives an understated and sensitive performance, but the very last minute of the film undermines the nuanced melancholia and sense of loneliness with trite sentimentalism.
i dont agree, the last minute is the reward that every good soul deserve.
The beginning reminds me "A Time for Us"…
beautiful
Great movie and wonderful music. I've been looking for the full sountrack, it's not on sale apparently :(
Half way through the movie, just had to find that soundtrack.
Sticks to me as the soundtrack from the Heavy Rain game...
🖤
Outstanding movie and performance, unfortunately the reviews say otherwise, but who gives a damn!
❤ Amazing
