  • In this video I talk about the differences between the gen2 Cayman S 987.2 and the gen3 Cayman S 981. I also make reference to the base model Cayman and Boxster models. There are some significant changes to the body construction on the 981’s compared to the 987 and it also has a number of upgraded technology packages which include,
    • A more sophisticated Thermal management system for the engine 9A1, transmission and heating system
    • Auto Start Stop function
    • Battery management system with vehicle electrical system recuperation
    • Variable deceleration fuel cutoff
    • Electro power steering
    • Electronic handbrake
    • Intermediate throttle application (Rev matching)
    • Coasting in conjunction with (PDK) auto gearbox
    • Optional dynamic engine mounts
    • And the oil level measurement has a better segment display in the instrument cluster as well as gearshift recommendation.

Awesome analysis. I see many people who are always looking to upgrade from a 987 to a 981, and as an owner of both I tell them that the 981 isn't necessarly an upgrade. IMO the 981 is a better daily driver, and functions better as a "car", but the 987 delivers more feel that is absent from more modern cars, without feeling like an antique. The technological differences seem to bolster my viewpoint.

I am exactly looking for an upgrade from my 987.2 base manuel to 981 pdk. I don't know why but I guess I am trying to understand difference. At the end I love sport use rather then comfort and maybe I should consider your feedback. Thank you

Would be nice to know the differences of PDK transmission between 987.2 and 981 :)

Thanks for the detailed comparison! I learned some things I did not encounter in other more driving focused comparisons, very nice! Keep up the good work!

Incredible detail here mate, thanks so much. Styling is such a subjective thing and I really like the 987 shape and think it will age well with a true retro look, but they are both fantastic. Is there any difference between gear and drive ratios for manual 987.2 CS vs 981, does one have taller gears than the other? Can you feel the extra body stiffness of the 981 when driving?

I had a modded 987S for 15 years, 135,000 miles. 300+ hp, short shifter, lightweight flywheel, Bilsteins. My 2016 Spyder is new to me and is more like a GT, 2” longer wheelbase and 3.8 911S motor. “A newer Porsche is a better car, but a worse Porsche.” It’s the hydraulic steering, man.

These are great videos and you get across so much information without overwhelming me. Could do a video on the Cayman 2.9L in comparison to the 2.7L and/or the 3.4L gen 1 Engine, as I have a 2.9L base Cayman (2009) and would like to know more about the changes achieved by Prosche. Thanks John

Thank you for vid I have the pdk 981 2.7 very satisfied but one complaint harsh ride on 20” wheels the ride in 986 is much better my opinion

Type 981 borrows the back swooping shape of the 911- the curve from roof to rear bumper

From a functional standpoint is the 981better than a 987.2 in every way except the 981 has lost some steering feel and auto stop/start needs to be dealt with? Love the detail in your videos. Thanks!!!

Auto stop/start can be toggled on and off.

    Hello mate !
Thanks for offering us such knowledge for free and so well put together.
I’m planning to buy a 987.2 3.4 with the pdk gearbox. With around 150k miles.
Here in France E85 (ethanol fuel) is very very much cheaper and converting the car is one of the first mod I plan to do. It’s quite a sensitive subject for Porsche enthusiasts here but I’ve been confirmed that thanks to the direct injection it’s not problematic it’s better to change the spark plugs for iridium’s though.
Do you have any information about that ?
Apart from that, no mods planned as it has been serviced recently (gearbox oil change/water pump and belt).
    Thank for your time mate.
    Take care.
    Marc

Lots of information in there. Didn't agree with your point re the 981 rivaling the Audi TT etc. Yes some feel is lost but ultimately it's a more capable sports car than the 987.2.

What are your thoughts on the 981 PDK gears oil change interval? I am normally OK with prescribed maintenance schedules, but I feel 12 years / 180K Km are a lot for that sauce? I hope Porsche are not assuming that the car goes in to the press after 12 years ;) I am thinking about changing if together with the clutch job after 6 years.

    • @GarageTechAutomotive
      @GarageTechAutomotive  3 роки тому

Hi, these PDK transmissions have two separate oils, one for the clutch and gearshifts and the other for the gears and differential (same oil as the Manual) if you are changing the clutch pack then yes change the clutch oil too, it will need to be topped up anyway as you’ll loose some in the process. Best to just get it done all together, the clutch oil is more important as it’s used to operate the hydraulic shifters and clutch etc. Seen plenty of issues on the VAG dsg and stronic. The gear side is only 3lt so would be straight forward. No harm in doing it earlier.

    • @Baerchenization
      @Baerchenization 3 роки тому

@@GarageTechAutomotive Yes, there is no harm in doing not-harmful things. There is a guy around UA-cam who changes gear oil at 10,000 Km. But changing oil 18x more often than necessary is not a sign of doing no harm alone, it can also be a sign of a mental condition ;) So the question is: is it a sensible thing, on top of doing no harm?

There is a reason why 981 is holding up resale value and will outdo the 987.2 and 718 4 cylinder turbo.

I mean if you can bro, try to get it with a limited slip as that will help with traction etc

I have a 991.1 without LSD. It is competley possible to just rotate it on the brakes. And of course lacking an lsd does help turn in very very slightly.

aaaaaand.... just about all of it is unnecessary on a fully electric automobile.
...having said that, i thoroughly enjoy my cayman manual and other (which shall remain nameless) manual sports car.
