Sure there is an old book 'Painting With Light' by John Alton and Todd McCarthy. You might know it but 3d is a great way as you show to use old effects used in movies. Keep up the work too! I show your channel to people who say Blender is not good for much!
Like the way you are narrating the tutorial. Very expressive. And informative. Even I am not a blender and cycles man, the stuff you explain is useful and helpful. Cheers.
There are too few tutorials about lightning. I'm using Blender for many years now and I love to watch your videos because they are short and to the point and especially great for advanced users. Most tutorials are about the basics of blender and every single step is explained which is really boring as an advanced user. But your videos are great, you are showing great ideas how to achieve things and all your tutorials are just great. Please go on like this, I'm looking forward for the next part!
Great tutorial. I suggest a tutorial that shows how to combine multiple lights to make a nice result. Or a tutorial that shows how light can change the mood of a scene.
Nice and clear tut, also read your article, I saw there a little info about noise reducing via branched path tracer. I suggest you to tell more about it, I think lots of people stuck with interior lightning because of it's very noisy result. For viewport preview path tracer faster but for final render it's weak). But may be I am wrong)). Thanks for your work).
:) luz com realismo 3d no blender. Pena que é no cycles e eu ainda não tenho hardware suficiente para testar. Mas mesmo assim é muito bom!!! Parabéns pela qualidade do seu trabalho.
Hi i follow your videos and are so cool, and makes me jump from 3d max to blender, can i question you which tutos start off? From begginer to intermediate? Thanks
thank you! lighting is amazingly awesome, so happy you made a video about this and intend to do more. I wish you had went a bit slower/more detailed with the technique at 1:15, that seems very promissing as well as somehow using images to creating a shadow map, hope you'll touch more on this in future videos
Great thing about Gleb Alexandrov is that he's very concise. He doesn't ramble on, he speaks to explain everything he needs to explain, and no more. He also does a lot less self-promotion than Andrew Price, who (I must admit annoyingly) creates tutorials that are 75% advertising for his new product.
I have a question about this process. From what I'm seeing this is great for smaller scenes, but what about large scenes? Would the process be the same or is there something different?
Daniel, that's such a great question. I should do a tutorial, I guess :) But in short: a cloud of very small omni-directional light sources. The key is the small size, and as a consequence, very sharp shadows.
Hi Gleb! As always thanks for the tutorial, i played around with the things i learned from here and this is the result media.moddb.com/images/groups/1/1/173/Experiment4Finished.jpg I want to thank you again, since i started watching your videos my lighting and materials improved. Keep it up you are awesome! P.S. Can you make a tutorial on how you made the image with the sphere in the end of the video? I really like the lighting there!
can't believe this tutorial is 6 years old and it looks fantastic!
simple yet informative tutorial with amazing results! Instant fav!
Great example of painting with light!
Thanks, James. Indeed, it's like painting.

Gleb, you're a rock star! Keep up your great work. I can't thank you enough for sharing your skill with the rest of us!
Ryan Hammerschmidt Ryan, I do it because of you! :) So stay tuned, and let's rock-n-roll.

Result look awesome, thanks for great tips.
I love your tutorials, is short and to the point.
Thanks. Lighting is my weakest part of blender. Now my scenes look much better thanks to your tutorial!
I just have a word to say: my cg photography God!
Your tutorial is still epic until now.
Really enjoy your tutorials...thanks.

We think alike, I had a similar thought - something like 'lighting & mood'.
I,'ve used blender for years and I head no idea there was something like light textures! O.o
Thanks Gleb, that's really useful ;)
Blender holds its secrets.
Great tips! Thanks!
wow.I'll try my best to learn from you.you are the best
Gleb, you're unique, thanks :)
Thank you very much 💖💖💖💖

Cycles can be noisy, yeah. Reducing noise via branched path tracer is an interesting topic, so I'll (hopefully) write something about it :)
thank you so much Gleb Alexandrov :D
wow you are really good in blender

Amazing!
awesome tutorial!
atmospheric lighting!
Tommie, do you mean scattering of light in atmosphere? or ambient lighting? :)
oooh yeah i mean scattering, its a new feature to blender :) keep up the good work man.. you make me laugh so much.. your videos are amazing! haha :D

AWESOME so helpful, thank you!!! :D

What I do at 1:15: I use transparent shader with a texture. It acts like a curtain, by blocking part of the light.
Gleb Alexandrov
I cannot get this to work at all. Could you please do some follow up on this?
Hrafn Nordhri yes, please!
youtube search transparent texture or alpha texture and you should find something that explain how to do it
this was great. thank you
Some info on the texture you are using for the transparent plane would be cool... I've tried about six different options and nothing works.
you're the best!
100 Forint near the lamp
i think it's better than andrew's
quick, snappy, and well organised

Ezy Teri Reddy You like free tutorials right?
Cool tut!
Whats your video card for octane?
I have a question about this process. From what I'm seeing this is great for smaller scenes, but what about large scenes? Would the process be the same or is there something different?
Where did you get you like texture? I have been looking for one similar but cant find any.
plllz , how can i achive a profisnal branding usinf light in blender , your the only one who can help , plz GLEB
Is there a methond in cycles to use a projector style method? I have this other renderer which can render any image like a real world projector.
Gleb, with the texture lighting, would you not want to use the non-colour data instead of the colour data of the texture?
It depends on the style of lighting. But yeah, you can use non-colour data.
How would you light something that supposed to be inside a flaming building, or something of the sort?
Daniel, that's such a great question. I should do a tutorial, I guess :) But in short: a cloud of very small omni-directional light sources. The key is the small size, and as a consequence, very sharp shadows.
i want a car lighting tutorial.. though too much trouble for you to crack it down i suppose.
At 1:40 : work perfectly in cycles, but not in eevee (i use blender 2.80)
It seems so effortless when you do it...

Veselin, very nice shading and lighting in your render, indeed!
Regarding the scene with the sphere, maybe I'll share the .blend file?
Gleb Alexandrov Ya that would be great, thanks!
