I agree. Most of the natural world is constructed with neutral colors, but some of it looks sort of bolder or artificial looking like: green grass and flower fields.
Black is already as neutral as is possible. The best way to interpret skin tones is to determine the hue without black. For example, if the skin is very dark, you might need a set of complements such as blue (ultramarine blue works well) and orange. Since skin tones are always very neutral in hue, within those two mixtures, plus white, you can get a start towards finding what you need.
Holy smokes I've never had the color wheel explained so clearly to me, it really felt like it clicked after I watched this. I'm so glad I found this channel thanks Diane!
What oil colour s are recommended for artists, I use camlin oil colour tube. And camlin brush brushes.Thank you 🙏🏾 so much , thank you for the brushes recommended , will try buying it sooner.
Usha, it is best not to use any medium at all. Manufactorers today who make professional paint product formulas that are perfectly balanced. Adding a medium weakens that integrity.
Thank you madam This explains it why during my time in visual arts classes back then, i keep mixing different wild range of hues just to achieve my desired colors!!
I have a question bc I been trying to get my head wrapped around color temperatures. If u don’t want to use a split complimentary color palette can u make a cool tube color warm or vise versa (ex. Quin magenta or cad red) and if so why do u need a split pallet? Is it just convenient or preferred hue?
When you use a palette color scheme, such as a double-split complementary scheme, it works best to keep the palette hues the same in all values for each color. When you warm a color, you're also changing its hue so the color relationship changes, meaning you are no longer using a split-complementary scheme. Remember, the palette scheme is your gamut of colors you'll be working with, but this scheme may or may not produce the same painting color scheme. That is your choice. Within the selected split-complementary palette scheme, you will have warmer and cooler hue on each side of the split. This choice gives you options for controlling the temperature in your painting.
A question about toning down tube colors. I’ve learned adding black and white to tone down cool colors helps neutralize them without changing the temperature. And adding earth tones to tone down warm colors. Does this work in the same way?
First, white and black do cool as well as tone down. They are both total neutrals, meaning neither of them has any hue in it. When we are "toning down", we are subtracting hue from the color, something the complement added to a color does. My preference is using a value-corrected complement. When we are toning down warm colors, we are also cooling them; when we are toning down cool colors, in essence we are warming them. Cooling or warming is relevant to the temperature of the color being added.
so if I add blue green to a yellow orange for dirt in a road but the color turns green, I now move down the color wheel and add an orange. Thus moving toward the complement of green. So is the concept that you move in the direction of the complement of the color that you want to remove from the mixture? I have listen to you talk about this in several snippets. I also have tried it with little success. Maybe I am moving in the wrong direction. (Each time you talk about this you are using different pigments. It would be helpful if you used those on your pallet)
The principle works no matter what pigments you are using. To answer you question: The complement of yellow orange is blue violet which is directly across from yellow-orange on the traditional color wheel. So if adding blue violet causes it to turn greener, then add to the mixture a bit of the complement of green . Hope this helps.
Dear Mam I had painted lots of landscape on acrylic as well as water colours but since I have stopped painting I have forgotten in Acrylic how to paint sky from dark to light and then staind still water in very light blue. If u have video on how to paint sky with clouds then pls guide me. Thanks Rims1
You're looking for the skill of gradation which I did in the very first Quick Tip 1 from several years ago. In a few weeks, I'll be doing another version of that skill. To find our complete list of Tips, go to - ua-cam.com/play/PLvx-2GtID2b4e3ECbRvzhjJTJCYAuuN3F.html - and scroll down to find all I've done thus far.
You'll need to remove that varnish with refined mineral spirits such as Gamsol or Turpenoid. Saturate a guaze with the spirits, and using a circular motion, gradually take it all off, the follow up with isopropol alcohol to remove the residue. Allow it to dry thoroughly, then put a new coat of a high quality picture varnish. See gamblincolors.com/why-varnish/ and vimeo.com/434803650?embedded=true&source=vimeo_logo&owner=14008734
Thank you a lot for the explanation and demonstration Miss Mize. However, i sill can't easily get a neutral color by adding its complementary. :/ May i ask something? What happens if we just add a color into gray color, as an amateur beginner painter, i couldn't succeed in the way you taught in this video easily. :/ Thank you so much for sharing information 🙏🙏😌
Thank you sir for this video but i have a problem i cannot make out your language because my English is very poor, your instruction is very important for me so plz tell me sir what can i do.
I extremely enjoy your videos! I’m a huge fan, you’ve single handedly consolidated lots of knowledge into a simple explanation. I enjoy seeing all the knowledge of other creators coming together to create a full image. Whatever it may be in regards to hundreds of color theory videos when you combine them all with this it makes extreme sense :)
Okay Dianne - I have watched so many of your quick tips and have singed up for your newsletter!!! This particular video really struck me... it all makes so much sense now and even though I have a color background, from design school, now that I am painting, I really can apply this knowledge in new ways. Thank you for a no-nonsense approach, direct and full explanation without loosing track of the original questions, and implementing it with a clear direction. Love you! If I may say so :-)
Okay now!! I get it. The ending explains the concept of color harmony being achieved with desaturated colors and neutrals or grays mixed using complmentary colors. I need to look through all of these videos. As I look to the right I see the cast shadow video and recognize I'm struggling with that now. Also shingles on a home is a struggle for me. Finally, I like to use a limited palette. Presently I'm painting a house with cad yellow, dioxine purple white sap green and a dot of vermillion. I so enjoy the entire process. It is such a puzzle and a challenge. Many thanks for your help!!!
The way you teach and explain things and show us how to mix on your palette are very effective. I learn something from all your videos. Thank you for being a fantastic teacher.
Thank you so much your technique of cteaching remind me of one of my teachers back in high school... I'm a DD I think and you kept me focused through the whole video I'm a hairstylist for living and I like to do art on the side and this was a great fantastic video thank you so much
This was another super Quick Tip Dianne! I'm so glad you took yellow and purple as an example - one I have trouble with and you showed the perfectly. Also, I liked the way you pointed out the neutrals in nature like green.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Would you be so kind to tell me whether you can neutralize only the yellow component from a green obtained by mixing blue and yellow so that you are left with blue only?
