It's not heavy unless the strings are literally moving like spaghetti.
Down tune your guitar to the point where it can shoot arrows
And it isnt djent untill the string are literally made of spaghetti
It's not heavy until the strings reach the floor

I tuned my 6 string down to drop e with normal strings. I have no regrets
Didn't down tune the drums 0/10
Thank you!
Wouldn't that break the drum heads?
MuslimNinjaAssassin Nah. Downtuning means loosening the heads. With enough force (but a lot of it), the head would break. But tightening the drum head would have a higher chance, so I think.
Ben M
From my time in marthning band we done it a lot every 3 shows I think?
MuslimNinjaAssassin It's happened occasionally with my school's drumline as well, but it's rare, since we don't tune heads that often.

If you are one of those who thinks that lower tunings are "heavier", I'll say this: Paramore guitarist uses drop C# tuning. Just for you all to consider it.
+DrakosLord Sum 41 uses drop C# on some songs on their album Chuck, namely "Angels With Dirty Faces", "I'm Not the One" and "Moron". They're good songs, I'm practicing "Angels With Dirty Faces" on bass. But drop C# really isn't that much lower than standard, it's just drop D and a half step down.
Roddor FJ Exactly! And yeah, I know. Point is that is not the tuning, but the way you play.
DrakosLord It's worth noting also that those are Sum 41's heaviest songs.
It's also worth noting that drop C# is one semi-tone lower thand Drop D. Which, ummmmm, isn't exactly pushing it in terms of down-tuning.
Rafael Irias Ochoa This. It's a half step lower than Foo Fighters.
The lowest I've ever tuned would probably be Drop ∆, though I've thought about tuning downward to Drop =_=.

Personally, I think that every riff has a tuning that it sounds best in, which usually ends up being the original tuning it was written in. To me this riff sounded best in Eb/D#, but some people will disagree, and at the end of the day everything we do is subjective and there's no real "right" answer.
real right answer is when you play finished song and it sounds FUCKING awesome
This video proves that heaviness comes from the riff more than the tuning. To me this riff just wasn't heavy, so no amount of tuning lower will make it heavy.
Honestly i think it sounded heaviest/best in standard E
venrakdrake
agreed
Yes, I believe it has to do with the tone of your guitar.
I think the drums have more to do with the heaviness than the tune itself
RelativelyLargeJohn Tbh the riff sounded like smthn youd hear in a death song.
Well done! Crazy riff, great bass playing! FWIW, I thought it was great around the "C" region, after that, it definitely became a "diminishing returns" thing.

no... A... unless you are meshuggah, in which case go as low as you like
Actually, id like to see meshuggah play Bleed in E tuning and compare that
i think that might have been a loss of clarity more than anything
I liked it most in D# or D
I think that it depends on how you play it, especially the palm mutes and the way you attack the strings. The band Sylosis sounds really really heavy and they play on E standard.
Juan José Fonseca Godoy Sylosis makes it sound like fucking B standard. It's the combination of adding the fifth below the root while palm muting the fuck out of it and the bass hitting the root. Much respect to them for playing like that.
i play drop [REDACTED] and this is the least heavy stuff i have heard.

If your band isn't playing in Drop Q, sign to a pop label.
Down tuning to the extreme seems to mud up the notes. Definitely heavy, you can feel the riff, just not hear it as much.
I personally just believe that this mix/playing is not tight at all.
There are so many bands tuning down to Drop C, Drop A, Drop F, etc... that have such a clear and open tone with great clarity.
This video, however, is the opposite. I even found it hard to listen to in standard.
Mason Stanley It also depends on the guitar as well. Having good pickups and an extended scale length helps the clarity of the lower notes. The types of wood that the guitar is made out of should also be taken into account.
I can agree there. I originally wanted to go with GDADGBE and instead ended up doing ADADGBE because of too much muddiness. Also still get some muddiness with the ADADGBE but that might just be because of the small 15W amp I use and/or my FX unit itself. lol
Robert Headley that is partly due to the guitar itsself. Single coil and active pickups don't come through clearly through distortion on the really low frequencies, and usually the pickups are designed to handle extremely low notes come on extended range guitars. His equipment just isn't meant to handle anything really past C#

Depends on the octave.
For everybody claiming that downtuning really makes you "heavier", it does not. The way that you play, the theory and scales you use, your guitar, amp and signal chain, and your rhythm section are what really determines how "heavy" your metal is.
Look at bands like Lamb of God, Children of Bodom, Pantera, and Testament. None of those bands tune lower than C# Standard or Drop C. Lamb of God stuff is in Drop D or Drop C#. Children of Bodom is in D Standard or Drop C. Pantera is anywhere from E Standard (Cowboys), D Standard (Vulgar and Driven) to C# standard (Trendkill). And a lot of Testament is in C# Standard.
These guys make some super killer heavy riffs without downtuning the guitar more than one and a half steps. Pantera even has a fucking amazing breakdown written in E Standard in their song Domination.
After a certain point, you can't even make out specific notes or changes in pitch without compressing the tone to high hell.
Some djent bands (mostly Meshuggah) are cool and pretty damn heavy, but mainly for their killer polyrhythms and Haake's drumming, not for amazingly heavy riffs.
+Jake McB
+Jake McB Dimebag liked to tune down a quarter step from whatever tuning he's in.
Lavaz666 Yes, I know that. But saying E Standard was a little bit easier and more understandable than Quarter-Step Below E Standard.
***** And then look at Ashes of the Wake by Lamb of God. Every single track on that record is either in Drop D or D Standard, and I'd argue that as one of the heaviest records I have ever listened to. I agree, heavyness is 100% style, and 0% tuning
***** Oh? Well look at Bleed. 8 String guitar, tuned to F# Standard, but the main riff at the beginning is played on the E string anyways. And to simulate the 5th fret B string bend later in the riff, you could bend behind the nut. All you need is their Axe FX setting and some serious skill and that riff would sound just as good on a 6 string
I find myself watching this video at least once a year because it's so dam hilarious.

The "drop Q" tuning actually offered an interesting effect. It sounded pretty cool. I guess down-tuning doesn't really offer much in the way of 'heaviness,' but still makes sense in terms of transposition.

Ah yes, back to the classics. This riff is still imprinted in my heart and brain to this day
I honestly expected to hear a much bigger difference in heaviness. Makes me rethink why all of those metal players are in drop b and drop a
this was a fairly poor example because single coil guitars tend to lack the depth and bottom end that guitars with humbuckers have, especially lower tunings
yeah, I guess that's true, but their are still a small handful of metal players who use single coils
This guitar has a humbucker in the bridge position
oh, kinda hard to see with the camera angle
Waylon Morley the model of humbucker matters too. stock humbuckers on guitars, usually the generic ones - like Fenders - have awful low end the lower you go. high output HB's like the Nazgul and EMG 81 have much better sound for those low notes
Oh god drop Q just sounded like farts.
Try to imagine... that's what seems to sound a classic Metal song for a non metalhead... you know when they say "it's just noise"... I think...

hahaha
The actual tuning is "Drop Ass"
dude! I lived in gurnee illinois for so long. Its awesome to know that u and I used to live in the same town.
there is a certain chunkieness that drop D# or D standard has, but its not heavy to say. and either way dropping just the (soon to not be) low E highlights it better.
Nobody show this video to Dino Cazares or Stephen Carpenter; we don't need them getting any ideas...
Your comment literally made me laugh out loud xD
lol!
And Chris Garza
Tuning doesn't really affect the heaviness of a song that much. The three things that really matter are the composition itself, production quality/guitar tone, and (only if its not an instrumental) the emotional impact of the lyrics/vocals. There are plenty of songs I've heard in standard tuning that sound way heavier than many 7 or 8 string songs.
Exactly! The composition, in my opinion, is the biggest factor of the heaviness of a song. Take Peace Sells...But Whos Buying? the album. Good Mourning/Black Friday is extremely heavy mostly due to the composition. And the song is in E standard 1/4 down.
I think the drop A tuning was the heaviest it had a good balance that definitely was head banging worthy
The heavier sound comes partially from the scale length of 7 and 8 string guitars as well as the fact that chords with lower notes sound way muddier.
C tuning sounded really good for this particular riff you are playing
Every time you take the drill I laughted so hard. How do you explained this to the people in the gym? "Hey guys do you mind if I.... ähm yeha just doing some headbanging while you lift? I mean it´s not even that heavy isn´t it?"
Hey dudes! you keep being really manly and I'm just going to be a doofus over here for a bit.
2:34 Hey look, rob made a video on the baritone guitar. Was wondering when he'd get to that.
For those who don't know, baritone guitars are tuned A to A instead of E to E.
A is so menacing, I love it
and there is me, using 11 daddario strings for everything between E and A-Drop
it's not the tuning that makes it heavy, it's the style you play it in.

When you played in drop Q it opened up a portal in my house, and when I stepped through, I entered into a land of wonder, warm lights, epic heavy metal, hot girls and free pizza. My dog that died when I was a boy was there, also. This snipette didn't start sounding different to me till it hit Drop A. It never actually started to sound heavier to me. I think that's just because it was the same piece over, and over. It's what is being played along with how the other instruments are being played that makes a song more heavy than the next, as opposed to just drop tuning the same riff. That's how I hear this, anyways. Hilarious video, though. Your sense of humor cracks me up :) Party on. Excellent.
I've never heard a bass mixed so low, there's almost no point in showing the bass footage
And justice for bass
That riff you're playing sounds exactly like the main riff for the song "Santa's Sleigh is On Its Way to Iowa" by Interpret the Y-Intercept. Just letting you know.
November Guitars did I just spend 10 minutes being pranked?
@@yvnggreasepan3084 ?
drop q tuning=spaghetti strings
InThaZ0ne So... you don't want to sound like Korn?
Duston McCreary Or at this point sounding like Messugah. XD
I really hope your joking
well their song titled spasm sounds messy so yeah.
InThaZ0ne
'The Church Of Spaggy' approves this.
What the hell is drop Q?
***** Q is not a note. It was a joke, hence the shitton of strings he had.
Thought so, now I'm going to tune my guitar to drop Z to match the Z note that I made up just to show him up
***** Dude the Pi note is where it's at, it makes a black hole when you play it
Duuuuude! sounds sick, let me guess, the tabbing is 3 1 4 1 5 9
***** Yep, and if you get an infinite-string guitar you can play the whole thing
It all depends on what metal sound you think is heavy. Some people call the high gain high treble solo play on the high strings around the 14th fret to be heavy. Others call the open string thumping on the low E string to be heavy. If you are a fan of the high treble metal sound stay with light strings and standard tuning. If you are more of a fan of the low end more bassy sound then tune down and go with 11's.
Sick riff!
I honestly thought drop A was the lowest tuning you get on a guitar for the longest time.
I was proven wrong.
there is no limit
Try E - but one octave lower.
Kickass guitar sound, that is perfect for rhythm based music and ideal for moshpits and what not!
TUNE IT DOWN TO H FLAT
THAT SONG IS SO HEAVY!
it makes me want to punch a tornado!
H flat is basically A#, or Bb, which is a common tuning on 7 string guitars :D
I know :D
I know :D
idk whats more terrifying, rob without a hat or the fact he casually tosses on 70s for c standard
Clear tone drop 70’s man. I love em.
