The Europeans had nothing to gain from sabotage, since they still needed the supply. Prior to the explosions on the Nord-stream pipeline, there were excuses from the Kremlin on "oh, there are technical issues", or "There needs to be repairs, so it's being shut off temporarily"... Then after those excuses ran out, they just decided to blow it up, which Putin knew would leave Europe having to buy higher prices elsewhere, which is exactly what happened. LNG. @@Pathippie

The West portrays Russia as a villain because Russia gives valid reasons for that portrayal. See: invasion of Georgia, 2014 invasion of Ukraine, 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Russia only recently became anti-NATO because NATO’s existence deters Putin from being able to bully his neighbours whenever he wants. NATO stands in his way from his ambition to reconstruct the Soviet Union.
If Russia invited Canada and Mexico to an alliance, Canada would decline because they’re already part of NATO, Mexico would decline because they’re a pacifist and neutral country, and America would enforce the Monroe Doctrine. European powers don’t get to interfere in the Western Hemisphere.
