unless your 3 pronged spear is new, you may want to make a metal file as part of your "diving equipment". A sharp spear point will have more penetration than a dull one. especially when spearing larger fish like uhu, large palani, pualu , papio, omilu etc. Keep your spear sharp and sharpen when needed or before your dive. using a dull spear would be like using the back end of a chisel to spear fish, you'll lose a lot of fish.
Good tip for a stuck 3 prong (or any tip for that matter), take a bic lighter or any flame and heat up the metal joint between the pole and the tip then unscrew. Works like a charm every time
Thank you for these tips! 🙏 I'm a beginner diver and starting to use 3 prongs more often so these tips will be very helpful. Especially rotating your spear, Never knew you had to do that until now.
try using strips of rubber from on old inner tube. wrap the strip (12 inches long) on the shaft to where you want your grip to be. Also, you can use these strips to afix the rubber to your spear. It keeps the rubber in the same position, whereas the sting set up may twist and tangle or the string may snap. Keep spares with you if need to do emergency repairs while diving. Cost? $.00 if you can find an old inner tube.It could turn you disaster into a pleasant one and get a good day of diving until you can make repairs. Old timer 50 yrs plus diving. tested and proven.
Recently started 3pronging so these tips help out a lot! My 3prong is only 6ft so I was wondering if you have any tips for approaching the fish and positioning since the range is limited? I dive Diamond Head side and can never get to the menpachis under the rocks. Mahalo!
For open game like manini, kole, etc. Hiding in a good spot or dive bombing usually works. As far as the range with hole fish; menpachi, aholehole, aweoweo. Most holes have different openings, so sometimes different angles make the fish closer. You can also land upside down on the hole, it gives you more extension. I'm gonna go over that in my next video!
get yourself a hawaiian tide calendar and listen to daily weather surf and wind reports. generally, the north shore is best during summer and early fall. Optimal conditions may exist if the wind is coming from the south and with little or no surf. it would be like diving in a lake. The same would be true for the south and south east shorelines. Waianae coastline is usually good until the winter months.
7mm, Bruddah! I dive with a Dry Suit now. I love cold water because it takes a real madman to dive cold! LOL! I dive Monterey and Carmel. Lots of Lings over at the Pinnacles, but it's confusing where you can and can't hunt. Sheepheads down south in Catalina and Channel Islands area.
I bought this at Homegrown at Pearlridge mall! We also have some of our own fishing/diving gear at fishanddivehawaii.com if u wanna support the channel 😏😉
Is there such a thing as a pole without rubber sling? All you do is aim long pole and stab at a fish or crustacean. Hold and jab it through a fish. Made a pole in the Philippines with a darning needle as tip. Caught a lot of stuff. What do you call this so I can buy here?
About 1/3 of the distance you would normally get with a speargun. Perfect size 3 prong is an 8' graphite imo. If you can get good with that. You can take home some pretty nice kuis/stringers.
Aloha and Mahalo, for da tips. Bruddah I do the same thing, with not twisting it, now I have to go try it out. The puget sound here is to cold. It’ll have to wait till I get there in July. Ever check the swap meet for used dive knifes, or other fishing equipment? Much luv, Bruddah. Keep up the good work>
I have actually! But only once, and they only had couple reels, but I heard they get deals. And yes! Twisting it makes a difference, Lmk if youre on Oahu we go dive!

thanks for the tips. some anti-seize (or some grease or wax) on the threads may help with the corrosion
Thank you for the tips! The freezer and the rotation one were new to me 👍

Awesome tips and videos! Any tips on where to go for a first time spearfishing trip in Oahu? Not guided, just solo
Thank you! Depends on where you are staying, DM me on Instagram @teamfishanddive
Awesome tips. Had no idea about twisting the pole.
So glad this helps man! Anything to help people catch more fish and be safe!
by twisting the band around the shaft as you "load" it , keeps the shaft from bowing making your shot much more accurate.
I Wanted to say thanks for all the help cause I’m moving out to Hawaii soon
Awesome man! Thanks for the support!
Very interesting. Never knew about twisting the spear before shooting. great video.
Thanks for the helpful tips! Have you done a video on how to wear and use a stringer?
These vids are so helpful thanks for what you do.
Aloha, greetings from Texas. Thank you braddah
💪🏾💪🏾🤙🏽 hope you're staying safe out there!
Excellent advices man, thanks so much!
Great tips. I'm just getting started and this video helps!
i use a bit of silicone grease on the three prong screw end before n after use
Abdulsameeu Ibrahim I put Froglube on mine since Froglube is biodegradable. Prior to Froglube I’d just use peanut oil of avocado oil.
RIGHT ON BRADDA GOOD TIPS.
Thanks bro, mean a lot!
Yessah can’t wait for the next one keep up the good work
Thanks bro!
Can u make a short video on how to fix the sling, how to have a better grip. Some video ideas I had

How about a video on how to aim with the 3 prong? I've been searching and can't find a decent one.
Fr? All you gotta do is point 😂
@@bval4449 How do you "point" in grave detail plz
@@jaymurskie to aim the 3 prong all you need to do is load point and let go of the shaft
Lead the fish with the tips point at it and let go
hey love your vids, what sling dot you use?
I use an 8' graphite spear from Walmart. Might upgrade to a custom soon
Is there a list of fish and legal sizes, I have found a few but I can’t find all of the minimum sizes for legal fish in Hawaii?
Go check our DLNR website for all the fish info! Make sure its .Gov though just to be safe!
i clean my bands thoroughly with freshwater after use. haven't seen any deterioration yet. do i still need to freeze it? n for how long?
Can I use construction glove ? The reason is it is more affordable
thanks for posting - what kind spear tip do you use? Is it retractable?
I use a 3-prong or a Polespear. And yes retractable, meaning that I can reload it by pulling the rubber or pole back toward me.
Thank you
My three prong is bent at the spear what do you do to straighten it out again?

Do you leave it in the freezer or just leave it in there for a couple hours?
How long do you put the band in the freezer for
what gloves do you use? are there special ones or are you just using a generic fabric glove with dipped palms?
What kind of range can you expect with the 3 tip?
not much
depends how long your spear is. generally, the length in which you stretch your band from the tip of your spear to your target plus about a foot.
About 1/3 of the distance you would normally get with a speargun. Perfect size 3 prong is an 8' graphite imo. If you can get good with that. You can take home some pretty nice kuis/stringers.
How long do you keep your band in the freezer?
As long as you like, can. Helps preserve it
@@FishandDiveHawaii Thanks man! I appreciate it
I really want to start diving but I'm afraid that I wont br able to have a good breath hold. What's the best way to practice and have longer breath?
You want me to do a video on it? Sounds like a good video topic!
Fish and Dive Hawaii if can, that'd be dope!
What's the song in the intro?
Do you just replace your tip when it gets dull? Or do you sharpen it?
I sharpen it with a grinder when it gets pretty dull
where can i find the rules for fishing like this?
Aloha and Mahalo, for da tips. Bruddah
