  • Hey everyone, happy to be back! But what happened to the channel? A lot of things, to be honest. I started a new business that took a lot of time. We had a 3rd boy (yay!) and I didn't quite have "character" energy for UA-cam.
In my mind, the "bullet journal guy" character had to do certain things for a video, and a lot of times I wasn't doing those things personally. I didn't think I could be the me that I was over the past 18 months. That's all kinda silly in retrospect - but that's how the mind works sometimes.
Going forward, I'll be sharing more of the "Matt" I am now. Less about the character and more about the man, husband, father, and creator. There will still be notebooks, bullet journals, and planning - but it won't be the character based creator I was before.
Hope you still like it, but what I'm most excited about is that even if no one likes it, I really want to make videos again. And in the end, that's the best way to start anything. Because I want to and it's fun. Thanks for watching!

The fact that there's still a pocket of the internet in which people can be actual human beings with flaws and vulnerabilities is amazing to me. Hats off to you for finding yourself and letting others feel the love. I can't wait to see what more you bring to this world. Thank you.

I came to your channel years ago looking for bullet journal stuff but stayed for your thoughts. Thank you for your vulnerability, I can relate to deferred goal achievements. We are all on paths with offshoots taken at times. The wanderings are part of our story as well. If you publish every 18 months, I'll still be here. I enjoy simple real content. This was it. 🌻🍄

When I find the creators on UA-cam who are just working for the numbers, I can't even watch. I think what everyone LOVES is seeing you be yourself, not a big team, we love you and your ideas. Not flashy. I've deleted a lot of my UA-camrs because they are predictable, or use shock values, or techniques to grow their channels, whatever they might be. I was thrilled to hear what you had to say today, and please keep just being you, and enjoying the process. Without that joy, what have you got? Not much. Looking so forward to your videos, and I'm signing up for your newsletter now! The one on Saturdays sounds particularly interesting to me! ❤ Xo-Julie

I just want to stress that your perspective, at least on my sub feed, is so unique. I follow other bullet journal channels but none of them delve deeply into productivity. I follow other productivity channels but none of them use the bullet journal as their platform and framework. These channels might reference the other topic but they don’t break down the details like you do. While I’m sure full time UA-cam is the goal, it is also more interesting to hear from someone who is managing multiple job roles (including parenthood!) as well as UA-cam. Keep doing what you’re doing - it’s why we’re here :)

Matt. Thanks for sharing your reasons for stepping away from UA-cam for a while. I can understand how you feel about not being as "perfect" as other UA-camrs and how that can make you doubt yourself and your work. I sometimes experience this feeling when I do my own Bullet journaling. I see how nice a lot of UA-camrs design and decorate their Bullet journals and I don't want to make mistakes trying something new in my journals; however, I have found out that when I try certain things and they don't work, it only seems to waste only a couple of pages in my journal, but what I learn from my mistakes only helps me get to another level of productivity. Again, thanks for saying things that I can understand.

I watched a Tony Robbins' 6 day seminar on how to use social media (about 6 months ago) and the biggest thing I took away was find the tiniest niche that speaks to your heart as social media speaks to billions of people, there are thousands who are your target group. Your niche can't be too small.
Sarra Cannon, an author with over 1M books sold and creator of UA-cam's HeartBreathings, says write what you love, not what sells. Or you'll surely burn out and fail to thrive.
It's okay to pivot and change a niche. But you certainly can't make your niche bigger to include a bigger scope of people.
Sarra also has a 90 day planning method and says to be realistic in your planning. If you don't have time for family, two weekly newsletters, a business AND UA-cam. You don't have time. Time is fixed. You can't make more. It's not additive. Be realistic. What's changed that now you have time for UA-cam? (Rhetorical question.) It's gotta be more than your mindset.

I love the 'keeping it simple' and really human approach on your channel. I live with chronic illness, so productivity seems like a weird space for me to be in, but your videos are really helpful to me. I just got started with bullet journaling this year, so watched a lot of your channel this time last year and found simple set ups and time management stuff massively helpful in trying to figure our how to pace myself and focus on the stuff I want to still be able to do. That is way harder than I expected, so helpful, straightforward, friendly tips and tricks are exactly what I needed.
I struggle with flashing lights and jump cuts so someone just talking to me and actually showing me how they do stuff is the most effective thing - and it feels really friendly. Look forward to seeing what is coming up, whenever you are ready!

I started following your channel a number of years ago - about the time I was trying to understand how bullet journaling might work best for me - distractions… life… stuff stopped the forward progress, so here I am again. I have journaled for years - no, decades. Have had to - self employed and the notes/journals kept had direct impact in the work I had been doing - still have many of those - all for the last 12 years, but going back to the early ‘90s for one reason or another.
Still the need to perfect, or at least commit to, a method is important - partly due to the concern that in my early ‘70s now maybe the little grey cells that store needed information are less than they were at the beginning of this millennium, so there’s that. Plus I have a project or two where their success is critical to people I care deeply about, so no screwing around is my daily mantra.
Engaging with those who may not directly be connected to my vision but are sharing their own path with integrity and generosity is, to me, worth significantly more than the perfection in the editing, lighting, imagery or how much can be packed into a 4 minute video approach to UA-camrs of the day.
Keep on doing what serves you best and know it’s up to us, the viewer, to determine what works for us and to use it and respond with appreciation and support where possible.

I've just found you, love your content, please keep going. In this AI world i prefer people who are Human. Thanx for sharing this post. To put this into perspective, I've had a youtube subscription since the beginning and this is only my second comment. Keep going. Looking forward to where you take us next. 😊

Looking forward to seeing you back here, man!
I've taken a similar approach and applied constraints to simplify so I can just focus on uploading quality content without all the fancy editing that was adding way too much friction.
Making videos has been way more enjoyable 🤘

Every once in a while I keep hearing about this Mr. Beast. I've never seen him. He's not in my little crafty-journal corner of UA-cam. But YOU are, and it's so good to see a video from you again, Matt! It doesn't matter if you're not "mixing it up" with your BuJo content. Different people at different stages benefit from your content. Beginners learn something new, and non-beginners get reminders and inspiration to keep doing it. Repetition is a part of learning and making something your own. 🙂

Hi Matt! I never react on YT clips, but for you I'll make an exception.
Last year I started to use BuJo. And I love it. When I search for BuJo explanation clips I rarely see a 'real' user. I mean a user who has a family, kids, a job, sports ect. Finally I saw your channel. I was glad to watch clips with great tips about BuJo from a familyman! Simple and effective! A BuJo method which I can use during my daily struggles as a familyman.
So, it's good not to match the other UA-camrs. They are good in their own way. But so are you! Stay just the way you are!
Keep up the good work man!
Greetings from another dad! (from Holland)

It's wild, because I found your channel less than a month ago. I noticed only today that your last post was 10 months ago. I thought, "that sucks. I liked his stuff." Then I got a notification that you posted like an hour or so after I saw that. 😂

I do want to say though, I was looking for some ways to organize my life, and I found your channel somehow. You were my intro into the concept of bullet journaling, and I've subsequently looked into You, Ryder Carroll, Mark your pages, etc. betwixt the myriad of artsy calendar content.Your channels are little gems in a sea of content. It has helped me a ton already. Of course, I'm new to it and still figuring things out, but I'm glad you are back and look forward to what's to come, even if it is wildly different and unrelated to bujo stuff. Do whatever you want, and don't feel pressured to stay in one lane if you desire to go a different direction. Good luck, and I wish you success.

Matt, I've been following you for what seems like forever! Through all the journaling stuff, your time at ConvertKit, and even from before all of that. Your newsletter is one I always read. I'm also a UA-camr, and this video was seemed to pop up at exactly the right time for me. Thanks for doing what you do! Just signed up for the dadvent emails too!

I really enjoyed this honest update - quite refreshing actually, to listen to something real. I am inspired by what you shared because I have been going through something similar - having a 3 month break from building my business because the imposter syndrome was so strong and my mental health was affected. The phrase you used 'the courage to continue' stood out to me, I hope to do the same. I always liked your unpolished style, it feels so much more relatable (and also so full of practical value!) then the polished/produced videos of bigger creators. Also, I want to note that repeating the same ideas and techniques is something I enjoy in your content - it helps me actually integrate these habits to my life. Sometimes it takes a while to implement the weekly review for example, and seeing updates of how you do it every time helps me take on that practice. I hope to hear more of your insights on productivity, notetaking etc, both the new stuff, and the same ideas and practices you've shared with us before. Good to have you back Matt :)

It's calming hearing your honest words and vulnerability - but also inspiring how you stick to your values in your content creation. I have been experimenting with social media for quite some time now, but never really stuck to anything. Mostly because of a mixture of being intimidated by the quality required to be produced AND the content seeming to have to become shorter and shorter and following specific algo requirements. So I really enjoyed listening to your perspective!

I never, well almost never, comment on videos, but I really wanted to thank you for this. This is the first video of yours that I’ve watched. I got here while searching for productivity and bullet journaling content. I’ve been considering starting a UA-cam channel for awhile, but I always stop myself. It’s important to me to be authentic with my audience, and I never felt right with all the things I thought I was supposed to do to be successful with this medium. It’s not really me. Put all that together with my age (50+) and my looks and I had just about given up. Let’s just say I’m not exactly small and I only have one eye. I lost my right to cancer about 10 years ago. But I think I’m starting to come around. This video has given me another little push in that direction. I’m now a subscriber!

Hey Judy, hope you can take the big leap to start a channel! I’ve also recommended just starting with IG stories as a way to get used to being on video with a smaller commitment. Cheering for you!

Saw the notification about your favorite books of 2023, not a big deal if the video doesn't go out, but I'm curious now! It's like a tease.
I guess there was a question about why we're here? Well, this time, the book video.
I'm not a bujo person, I guess I'm more interested in how you process things. I'm more of a messy functional planner akin to Amanda's Favorites (she's a planner reviewer). Only I create my own layouts in a discbound when I feel I need structure, otherwise I'm scrawling in a notebook. But I was intrigued by insights you had. Like there was the time when you talked about setting up mini routines that were triggered by a cue, not a time. I think this might have been around the Full Focus Michael Hyatt period, I dunno. That walking down the stairs to get coffee was what intialized your work from home day. This is entirely from memory, I could be wrong. I just recall I was trying to be consistent when I had a variable schedule, and had come across the concept, but was trapped in this idea that it had to be this special cue instead of based off something I did naturally. I felt a bit stupid to not think of that on my own, but, you know, that happens. It was a small thing but very helpful!
Regarding feeling like you're not measuring up to bujo perfection. We're all intimidated by them! And it can be discouraging for others too. It's really reassuring when people aren't like that, and still can successful in a way that makes them happy.

Nice to see you back, I just got so busy finishing my degree that I dropped off watching a lot of content. Took this AuDHD awhile to get my MSc Thesis completed, but I am happy that I finished it. Your productivity tips, and your ten min time blocking.
