Bought two! How unique to be able to have a towel and say "Look here, at this video, where they are making this very towel from design to production!" My first LWIF merch thank you very much for making such unique content!
as a person of chinese descent, i seriously admire japan's tradition of craftsmanship in all that they do. they have done such an amazing job not only preserving but elevating these artisans
Very very cool to actually see the process. I’ve got a few Tenugui around and I can’t believe the amount of work and craftsmanship that goes into making them.
What a wonderful way to showcase Japanese shokunin and support the channel! (and your investment in making videos with no guarantees that the tenugui won't leave you out of pocket is admirable. Thank you Greg and Akko!)
As a photographer, every single step of this process was inspiring and delightful to me. I could spend days just taking photos in that dying workshop 💛
Screen printing brought to the max - amazing! Such a delight to see people being creative. And a welcome diversion from all the nastiness in our world.
0:53 As a french speaker it's so coincidentally funny that you say "[your wife] wanted to know what was inside" and then cut to a sign that says "rien", which means "nothing" in French 😄 Amazing video as usual, thanks a lot for the discovery!
I have quite a few tenugui around the house (I think we're an unusual case). We use them for: 1) hand towels, 2) hachimaki (Obon & Taiko) 3) small gift wrap (like a furushiki) 3) sweat towels. We also have a bunch of commemorative tenugui that we just save.
I love the videos about traditional japanese crafts so much. The pottery video is probably my favorite video from this channel. Please make more of these.
that is such an impressive level of craftsmanship! i can't believe how many steps it took, and how intricate they all were! truly a band of artists. it was really cool of you to not only make this video to showcase their work, but also to support them by commissioning the design. hopefully it'll inspire more people to seek out such a creative craft ✨
Thank you so much for sharing this with us! I'm a printmaker and any knowledge that I can get my hands on especially from a culture with so much to learn from is dearly appreciated. I'm definitely saving this as a more current reference point. 🙌🏾
I use the Tenugui I have as a headband. They are great because they have a bit of texture so they don't slide off easily, they absorb a lot of sweat and dry off extremely quickly! Great for everyday use ❤
Simply breathtaking. If more heritage, artisan crafts were spotlighted in this way, then perhaps they would be kept alive for longer. Similar to other commenters, I have never purchased "merch" like this before, but I typically think of merch as mass-produced tat with a machine-stamped logo added. Less than halfway into the video, I paused it to see if there was an order link in the description. Score! THANK YOU FOR SHARING, as always. ❤
The perfect way to display my two favorite things: Japan and UA-cam! I feel so honored to have ordered one. Thank you all for all of the hard work that went into this.
My tenugui was delivered this morning to my home in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington DC. It looks and hangs great, thanks Greg for putting together this great project.
Thank you for sharing your adventure with making this. I really really want to learn how to use the cloth to make each of those items shown - the handbag, the bottle holder tissue box cover, gift wrapping etc etc. So incredibly beautiful, and I’ve always loved that particular indigo blue that you see a lot of in traditional Japanese artworks, clothing, ceramics and crafts. Thanks again for sharing this. Much appreciated. 🙂🐿🌈❤️
I never support youtubers and the like monetarily, but I ordered this product in a heart beat! Your videos are my favourite ones in all of UA-cam. Thank you!
Can’t believe I only found out now, wish I could have gotten a piece from you but I’m so very happy for you that it sold out completely! This video is truly an eye opening experience for me and my friends, I hope they continue to persevere with this dying craft.. your video honestly deserve to get more views!
Would you like to buy mine from me at cost? My boyfriend got it for me as a gift but I've never even seen this channel so I feel like it's wasted on me.
Yippee, I got one before they ran out. Watched your channel for years and so glad to get something to support it. Great idea for something simple yet very special.
I love textiles and tenugui and have a couple I bought in Tokyo years ago. I never thought I'd be able to see how they are made, anger like you, I thought the process was much simpler. Thanks.
My children and I love watching your videos as they're always so interesting and calming. I'm honored to order one of your hand-dyed towels! Especially after seeing the tedious craft gone into making them. Thank you! 🙏 -Dale
Aloha 🤙 from Honolulu! Another outstanding 👏 video. Thanks to you, your wife, and your lovely family. I love the way you delve into the smallest aspects of Japanese culture. It really helps me understand Japan better. It's soooooo different from American and Canadian cultures.
it's so cool when you show how traditional art and craft adapt to modern needs! these are my favorite videos :) just bought one and will probably use it as a poster
As of this comment, 24 towels remain! Glad I got around to watching this video before they sold out, or I'd have missed my chance to order one :D I love textile crafts, and the style & colours you chose are really pretty!
This was such an excellent video! The craftsmanship and intensive labor to make your tenugui was very well documented. Gives your viewers a whole new appreciation for this kind of work and the skill it takes. Thank you so much for sharing this! God bless.
Bummed I missed this. I learned about tenugui on a recent visit to Japan. I started with using them as headbands but have branched into drying hand towel in summer and using them to replace bathroom towels. They dry so much faster. And in a pinch in a hotel that didn't give out facecloths, I used it for that too.
I got mine yesterday! I’ve hung it on the wall. Thank you. I am literally watching this video and looking at the tenegui. I feel like I’m in a museum listening to the audio explanation of the art work!
Unfortunately for the U.S. and some other countries the only affordable option to ship was by SEA (like on a boat), so the expected arrival date is probably in November. Before COVID hit, you could ship to the U.S. for under $10. Now it's about $30 to do it by air mail, so that obviously couldn't work for the $40 shipping included price. Sadly we didn't find out about this until we were trying to ship them out. In any case, sorry for the wait.
Did you have an easy time? For some reason the wooden pieces kept falling off (the top and especially the bottom) and I ended up having to tape everything together (in the back where it's hidden) so they'd stay in place. It was quite frustrating lol.

Aww man, I know I'm 3 weeks in but I really wanted one. I don't usually buy youtuber merch but a handcrafted item like this, its worth it. You should find another artisan who makes traditionnal items in bulk for another video and another merch drop
It was an excellent and clear presentation of a complicated textile process. Also funny that there is a concrete object that links the video to the process. In addition to a copy for myself, I have ordered a few pieces as good and well-documented gifts for textile-interested friends.
Great!!! I'm a great fan of nihongo color palletes. They make me happy in a dull day and help me forget end of soviet era in Poland where empty beer can was an collectors item because it looked colourfull and "western". "small eye candy"
Excellent merchandise idea!!! Great effort! I just spotted some tenegui featured at the Aomori Museum of History & your video pops up in my feed! Great timing! Thank you for making such an awesome video & paying homage to the artisans who still keep this tradition alive. Looking forward to your next video!
Hi, I've been a fan for a while now. I really want to see how Aiko & Shin are doing now & how they look now. I really love the videos where Aiko & Shin are there. Are you able to make an update video with them about how they are doing. I love this channel a lot. ❤
I studied Textile/Surface Design and have always been interested and fascinated by Japanese textiles and have always been curious of their own processes for different crafts. I truly appreciate your UA-cam channel for showing these crafts and just how much work goes into making textiles in general. Textile arts are generally unappreciated especially in the USA, but seeing this video allows me to continue my passions that is TEXTILE DESIGN… Thank you so much for putting out a wonderful video. 😊 Also, the cloth could be used to wrap around a handbag handle, it would show off many layer of the design depending on how it’s wrapped.
I love this video, immediately placed an order! Even before you mentioned that you can buy them I wanted one for my self, what a lovely pattern. And I have a new appreciation for this craft after seeing how much work goes into it. I really enjoy these kind of videos from you, thank you!
Wow! I really really enjoyed seeing the process and learning more about traditional crafts. This is the first time I've bought merch from a UA-camr (like a few other commenters I can see!) and I'm so excited to see it. Well done to you and your family for all your creativity, hard work and care that goes into all these projects! Best wishes from the UK ☺️
Another excellent video! So glad that we can buy one of your tenugui. It will be a treasured kitchen accessory for us. Can you give us a link to more information about the shokunin "expo" in Tokyo?
Just ordered one, down to 159 now! Excellent idea to sell them with the hangers. Also, have you considered doing a video on the differences between Japanese and Western woodworking? I think the different joinery styles would be especially interesting.
My boyfriend got me one of these towels for Christmas. I've never even seen this channel until he showed me this video to explain why the towel was special, and I'm rarely on UA-cam, so does anyone want to buy it from me at cost? No shade to people that like this stuff. It's just not for me and I feel like it shouldn't be thrown in the trash if it was loved by others enough to sell out. I didn't save the cardboard mailing tube but I saved everything, even the little paper inserts.
Omg this was a lovely video! I kept wondering about the UA-cam typo but then realized its just a copyright thing lol. This is very unique merch Greg, well done!
Why can’t JD produce a quality vid like this. Instead, all he does is doing the same old topic and use his kid milking money in superchat. Or, scam money through kickstarter. His nothing but scam.
Not sure about this specific tenugui but be careful about exposing them to strong sunlight. I have one I kept in a shaded corner on my balcony that turned very faint...
This is the first time I’ve ever bought something like merch from a UA-camr! I’m glad I got one before they sold out
Same! This really was something I had to buy! 😊
Hands down the best quality merch I’ve ever seen advertised.
I wasn't as lucky.
Supporting local craftsmanship for youtube merch is a great idea. It's a win win situation. Wish more youtubers did this
Thank you, Greg! You bring us content about things that make Japan so special, things that hardly anyone knows or talks about. Your channel is great!

The cutting of the fabric sound has a calming effect, ASMR indeed.
