We can get an idea where”Brother Rapp” and a bit of “Funky Drummer” came from by listening to this workout.

I didn’t care much for this at first when it was first released on the MOTHERLOAD album in 1988. But I’ve come to appreciate the song much more over the years. A lot of intricate parts. It’s not a big favorite of mine but I do like it a lot.

I have to disagree with you 💯 This is tight as you can get.

I only wish he’d sat down and write out some proper lyrics for this one instead of just reeling off lines from the top of his head. This could have been a hit single. The groove and the production are right and crisp!

But that's where the real FUNK comes from. You can't rehearse FUNK. It has to flow from the deepest innermost part of your body. You don't think about it, you just cut loose. I hope that this gives you some insight! No disrespect intended towards you!

You are correct. In fact, "The Payback," although a classic, was almost -- Repeat: ALMOST -- sullied because of the improvised lyrics when JB went off-script in the latter part of the song.
James Brown has had some GREAT moments when he free-styled, but you could often tell when he was reachin'.

Not digging this one. This was basically Mr. Brown trying to find his way lyrically over a groove he came up with. I get why this wasn’t released. It didn’t need to be 10 mins. He could’ve tried this for 2-3mins and he would’ve figured out it wasn’t working til he had better lyrics.

Interesting you say that, was only reading y/day that Bud Hopgood would trim down 10min tracks to 2~3mins for 45rpm's.

@@SoulOnTopJB ahh ok. That makes sense. “Baby Here I Come”, to me, doesn’t seem to go anywhere lyrically. It’s a basically a 10 min demo track. Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson have demo songs of some of their biggest records, it’s the same music but lyrically they’re trying to find where to go.
