I have a very similar one using probably the same diagram. I hit some of the same construction bobbles you did. Playing with the drill seating depth in my chuck gave me the 4" (barely) and then flipping the board over worked since the drill had almost completely emerged and thereby provided the starting hole. I polished the holes with a straight reamer and chamfered the top ends. They allow easier dowel insertion. A few taps with a rubber mallet solved any issues regarding steel rod clearance issues. I put movement holes on both ends of the board, but agree that only 1 end actually needs them. On mine I initially put the wing nuts on the inside. I later replaced the wing nuts with a threaded 1" brass disk softly notched around the outer rim that I made, which gives a larger bearing surface against the wood but is also easier to grasp with my clumsy fingers. For the stocks I use it on I replaced that 3" pipe end cap with a 2" pipe end cap for less wobble room. If I need to I can switch back to the 3" cap.

Looking back, I wish I had just went to U bolt way like Larry Potterfield's cradle. Its simple but gets the job done.
Truth be told even what I have here is overboard for me. Ive chucked up the cradle in a vice 2 times since class 2 yeara ago and scratched a little bit and thats it. Between diabetes and cataract in one eye and a burnt out cornea in the other thanks to a careless kid with caustic soda ( 😖 ) I can hardly see to checker at all.
However, I plan on that changing soon. All I have now is the shit cutters and handles from SDI. I do plan on carbide upgrades and maybe even a decent little Dembart kit maybe. Its hard telling. The ol' jig does need upgrades looking back but it's not to bad for a first attempt at one. I was kinda proud for a 2 beer long project 😂

InSight Freedom Thanks! Rhe plan is in a ebook I have but I tweaked it a little bit. Nice little project that saved me $100. My dad has since moved on from this world.but the one thing I got from him besides his name is his ability to hoard lumber scraps 😂 you just never know when a piece will come in handy.
      Thanks for watching.

Brilliant , thanks for sharing. In principal it could be used for a few other applications as well.

32leader I recorded a video a little bit ago and battery died on camera before I could get the video transferred to my pc for editing.
It should be up in an hour or 2.
