- How to Fly Fish for Coho Salmon in Frog Water on the Vedder River has always been a mystery to me until my buddy Mike Chow graciously showed me the ropes one day.
I will be honest with you... I'm a little jelly of the coho death pool shots. Always makes me think... WHAT? HOW? Where? Why them? Why not me? Why did I go to my spot? Why do the fish gods not smile on me?
Well it happened! Dr Mike Chow and Me have been meaning to get out slaying coho on the fly since Covid was a big deal.
I dabble with Fly Fishing, but consider myself a fly fishing hack at best. While my uncoordinated casts smack down on the surface the coho didn't seem to mind. They chased down and ate my home made flies.
The river has really changed and being low and straight there are few places to wet a fly line. Fortunately there are still some spread around. Keep looking for tell tail signs of fish. Splashing tails on the surface. They love any kind of submerged wood and debris. Rocks too.
If all the stars align and you have fish, good water and the right fly you can entice some bites.
While this certainly isn't for everyone if you have the gear you could give it a try.
I just used one of my 6 wt fly rods with intermediate sinking line and different shades of Wooly buggers to entice the bites with 8 to 12 pound fluorocarbon leader material.
Varying the stripping seems to make a difference in how well you trigger hits.
As for fly colors the best recommendation I can think of is dark when it's dark and bright when it's bright.
Bring lots of flies. I was losing 5 to 6 per outing. They get snagged in trees, on fish and on the bottom. I'm using size 6 to 8 hooks.
Hope that helps you out incase you want to give it a try. Questions below?

so nice to see a fishing video that isn't masquerading as advertisement for fishing gear.
Is that what you don't like? Yeah I don't have sponsors. There are a few guys that send me stuff to try, but had those contacts for a while. You know some people actually want to know what gear is being used. Because of the range of people's experience levels it's hard to target every viewer with exactly what they want to see.
beautiful river, and spot. I might give fly fishing a try
Yeah Pretty nice to have close to home.
This, I haven’t done, but looks so fun! Awesome stuff
Yeah, it's quite exciting... I got a little addicted to it after this morning. Hit it a few more times that year. Maybe I'll make a compilation video with some of the other days and tying some of the flies.
Amazing video. Just fishing! If you’re a fly fishing hack, I’m not even an angler. Can’t wait to get out and fish for coho on my marketplace fly rod.
Excellent I hope you have a great experience!
Finally you’re on the fly!! Epic video Doc
Haha, yeah started a couple years ago... finally made a video. I have some more footage from the other year. Have to do more editing maybe closer to the season.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures what’s your email doc ?
@@TefZee do you have instagram? You can message me there or you'll have maybe a longer wait with the email thefishingdoctorsadventures@gmail.com
yes, didnt know it but waiting on this for years, great stuff
Haha... yeah this footage is from the 2022 season and just got around to editing it now. Is that what you mean by you were waiting for this specifically?
subscribed in the first 50 seconds, really nice video.
Oh, thanks for subscribing. I'm glad you liked it.
Nice video man! I’m going to Canada for holiday and will be aslo 2 wks on Vancouver Island from start of the October for fishing. I would love to catch some coho on fly rod. Do you fish only in slow water so you can strip the flies? I'm from Scotland so Coho fishing is completely new to me. Andy advice would be great! Tight lines man!
You probably can fish for them in any water. The water I fish is the slow frog water and strip flies that look like flashy buggers or streamers.
Love this vid.what type of fly line is that?I will be doing that this year for sure.
Clear intermediate sinking line. I don't know the exact type.
That 1st Hookup was Pretty Sweet!
Thanks
when you said intermediate fly line, that means you didnt use any sink tips or anything? Thanks
Intermediate sinking line, no sink tip.
what is your rod and reel wt doc? thanks for
@@Alister-t8t I was using a 6 wt, its my trout rod as well. If I was purposely buying a coho rod I would get a 7 or 8 wt which would probably be a bit better for those bigger fish.
must be a lot of fish there
Yes definitely stacked up in there.
Was this November?
This was probably mid October.
what flys were you using
@HippoFartsR6 dud it now show up in any of the Video? Thought I had a close up. Check my Instagram for some shots of the flies. Just little flash flies.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures Thank you
@@HippoFartsR6 Good Luck
Last time i checked this spot is gone completely changed
Probably... that's what happens to this river always changing every year.
The description says how to fly fish for cohos. And in the first 2 minutes, you catch a fish and then point the rod at the fish. You should never point the rod at a big fish and actually use your rod to help fight the fish. Thats a beginner fisher mistake. Edit... At the end of the video, I know why you pointed the rod at the fish. You said you were using your 6wt trout rod to catch these. It wasn't enough rod. Otherwise you would have broke your rod.
OK, thanks for commenting.
What's with the duffous wading out into the middle of the run for?Take a casting lesson and practice.
@@josephalvaro5244 I don't know, but you seem pretty educated on the subject. Maybe you could come out and give us lessons. This was my first time trying.
Why are you posting this? Isn't there enough pressure on the vedder. Just enjoy it and forget about posting ego stroke vids.
That's what I do... fish, photo, video and publish. Been posting fishing photos, reports and videos online since before it was called, "content". Way back when I was in grade school... yikes that's a long time ago. Doesn't matter where I live, where I fish... I capture what I can and share my experiences. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Catching fish on camera adds another element of difficulty to the experience that I enjoy. I love looking back at old videos. Stuff I thought I'd never forget, but it's already happening. Nice to have the refreshers. I love fishing and sharing how to fish type videos as well. Some are just fishing related. The Vedder is a City Fishery in a hugely populated area, well known. Hardly what I'd call a remote secret fishery. If I want to fish a place like that I just hop in the car and put some miles between me and the population. You can call it whatever you want, but that's just your own opinion. I'm not here to change your ideas on social media and why people post videos like this. Thanks for watching! People like yourself consuming content are one of the reasons I keep posting stuff.
Come on,mate lol. The C/V is pretty much a factory river 😂
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures Oh no! You mean more clicks and comments would boost view count which boosts the ego of the content creator who will then put out more videos about an unbearably crowded river?! 😂
Haha yup basically factory river with the hatchery producing millions of fish!
@fishingwithrod you're right, you need to put more videos out about how ridiculously crowded it is this year.
