Giving a second life to the Ensemble INtercontemporain after the dath of Boulez (RIP) was extremely challenging. The challenge has been splendidly met.

    Best video on UA-cam.
I seriously appreciate Benjamin's orchestral pieces a lot and I think, although being a famous composer, his music is still underrated

This piece, Palimpsests I & II and Sudden Time are all masterpieces and his vocal works are no less impressive.
If you get an opportunity to listen his Upon Silence, don't miss it!

George Benjamin is one of these composers (Julian Anderson, Michael Jarrell, Eric Tanguy and so on) who have been feeding on spectral music, for the better!

The preparation of the cymbal at 2:46 (on from 2.43) is actually very funny, even though unintendedly so.

***** I agree that his music isn't very innovative, you're labeling of what you dislike as "jewish" isn't very innovative either...

    • @Khayyam-vg9fw

It's not the Jewishness of "The Fountainhead" that's offensive; it's the immoral creed that it embodies.

    The Emperors new clothes.
It’s funny reading the polarity of comments. On one hand, a few who just write this piece off (I may be among them) and others who marvel at its supposed brilliance. I’m reminded of those who stroke their chins and gaze approvingly at blank canvasses or performance art with mud and screaming.
No doubt this is original and sophisticated but in the end it will be no more than a footnote in some unread book on music of the period. No one will be brought to tears by this...but maybe they should be.
    ...’just sayin.

Like soooo much British music over the years, expert, highly skilled and tasty stuff...but ultimately, so shallow and forgettable. Still, very few can do what he does.

    • @Khayyam-vg9fw

What? Write "shallow and forgettable" music? Surely that's a good thing, isn't it?

    • @MarcusHK1

@Khayyam1048 It's indeed better than unforgettably bad music.

How I utterly dislike his use of pitches! This quasi diatonic moments all of a sudden colored with "wrong" notes is utterly disturbing. Flugelhorn solo with the pointed chords and the cymbal = annoying moment.

  • @socratease4645
    @socratease4645 5 років тому +2

I just realized i too can be a composer. No melody necessary. Just nonsense... in musical notation. This composer should be doing something useful like waste disposal or maybe picking up refuse on the beach. Its a serious problem. He could be put to much better use

If you want modern music which you will like from first note to last, listen to my music. It is very tonal, jazzy and completely "accessible" In other words, some would not even call it "modern", but so what? Audiences love it! Ken Laufer
