  • Tony Stewart is one of the greatest drivers to ever strap into a NASCAR race car. He has 49 career victories and 3 Cup Series championships to his name. The last of those coming in 2011 in a miraculously excellent run to the finish. While appreciated for how incredible his run was many do not realize just how much came in Stewart’s way in the 2011 season and just how impressive his championship actually is. So today we will take a deeper look at Tony Stewart’s 2011 campaign.

I think fondly of that 2011 title chase. I was 9 years old and had just gotten back into the sport after some two-and-a-half-years being on hiatus. I remember the Homestead and seeing Carl & Tony battle it out as the laps wound down. I was not even a decade old but I knew how tight the cards were. You couldn't make a mistake. I was pretty nervous watching those final circuits as the gap stabilized. When he got it, though, I was relieved. I had seen one of my childhood drivers go back at it and get another one to his name. That night was pretty special and I'll never forget it. Not to mention it is one of the few memories of that season I have. Now as an 18-year-old looking back in the year 2020, where virtually everything in this sport is completely different, and obviously watching this video, I can truly appreciate the fight Tony and that 14 team put up with the performance they had dealt with for most of the season. If there's anytime a driver in any motorsport is down in the dumps competing for a championship heading into the final races of the season, they should look at this one, because it perfect defines what a racecar driver does to come back in a time where the competition, was arguably at its toughest. As a fan, it teaches you that truly anything can happen, and if your driver is behind the 8-ball, they can still get the job done, regardless if it's based on luck, self-luck, or both. In conclusion, I view this championship highly in regards, when looking at others. If we can get something like this in the future, I wouldn't be too terribly upset, even if it's Kyle Busch as the one fighting back from a down regular season.

@@jeffgordonedits1258 Saw the other comment you posted on this video about the Chase and how it's changed NASCAR championships over time. Look, I'm not a fan of this playoff elimination format we have. If I had to go with this or the old Winston Cup season-long championship format I'd go with the second option in a heartbeat, but it's not to say that the original Chase format with points was bad. In fact, I'd actually go with something like that or this if NASCAR had to keep a postseason format. NASCAR's postseason format before 2014 allowed not only drivers outside the top 5 to be title contenders, but also championship point leaders to clinch their titles, if their 10-race stretch was dominant enough. To be clear, the 2011 version of this points format, with wildcard spots, was made because of Jimmie Johnson's 5th-straight title, and if there's anyone to thank for that, it's not just NASCAR, but JJ himself. But I think Tony was inside the top 10 at Richmond when the regular season came to an end, so he made it into the championship hunt fair and square, at least on that front, unless I'm wrong. Anyways, I'd like to hear your thoughts if 'ol Jeffy G would've won a championship this way. In that case would you truly dislike this format? Or is it favoritism and you'd be singing its praises? I know, the 24 wasn't in the hunt and Carl Edwards was the guy not named Tony Stewart going for the title in 2011 but the question's point stands. I'm interested, because it seems as if it has the potential to go one way, or perhaps, the other, with "the other" referring to favoritism.

    • @chromediesel444

@Jeff Gordon Edits As long points mean something compare to the current elimination nonsense. If 2011 format was modified to have seed points like 2004, Edwards could of won 2011 Championship, edging out Stewart by just few points. But again, 2011 format was a result of JJ straight 5 championships. Edwards bonus points kept him closer to contend for championship.

@@nascarnational Agreed. I would chooae the 36 race consistency version over the current mess. Never liked all those gimmicks after 2014 season. But if NASCAR intends to keep the postseason, go with 2011 Chase, only modify by not just giving bonus points for regular season wins, but where they finished in regular season standings. Like 1st place: 10 points, at the way to 10th place earning 1 point. If that was the case in 2011, Edwards could of won the Championship.

This format of the Chase was the one I liked the most. While the current knockout one is interesting, I thoroughly liked seeing just the top 10 and later top 12 duke it out for the final 10 races. Despite doing screw all the first 26 races, Stewart and SHR knew what they had to do going in and executed it almost perfectly to win. I was happy since I rooted for both Stewart and Edwards(ngl I wanted Edwards to win more than Stewart)

If NASCAR wants to keep the postseason for entertaining sakes, go with 2011 Chase format. Top 10 drivers in points are more deserving to contend plus two wildcards. The only tweak I would of done is add bonus points for their regular season performance. 1st place 10 points, 2nd: 9 points,,,,, all the to 10th place with 1 point.

2011 summed up Tony as a driver perfectly. He had a switch that I'm not sure he even knew how to flip whenever he wanted, but when that switch was flipped he could do anything in a racecar. Really the last example I've seen of the winner not being the guy with the fastest car, just the guy who refuses to lose. The Homestead race being a perfect example, a race that normally those circumstances mean your race is over. Like those coaches who get players to perform at levels they didn't think possible, he could get performance from his car that it wouldn't think possible. He was my favorite driver growing up and he could be incredibly frustrating to follow because he would kind of disappear for races at a time, but when he flipped that switch there was no better driver on the track. You never knew if it was gonna be Tony Stewart driving that day or was it gonna be Smoke. 2011 saw him find a way to get Smoke behind the wheel for almost the entire chase.

I so loved Stewart's final championship. He entered the Chase stating outright that he didn't deserve to be there, as his team had not been performing well. Then, he proceeded to win fully half of the last ten races, including the final race at Homestead...which he HAD to win to break a points tie with Carl Edwards. To me, that was an epic performance over the span of ten races. And by the way....this Chase is a case study in the fact that 'every single point counts'.

Now with NASCAR I no longer follow seasons, and just watch the occasional race. Too many rules and gizmos: stage points, playoff points, stages, playoffs, win and in format, these new crazy pit rules in Xfinity/Truck, weird aero package that makes cup guys barely faster than trucks. It’s like they copied WWE and Stadium Trucks, and ended up with something awful in the middle. I almost need a cheat sheet to keep everything in check.

Amazing video! I was 10 years old when Tony won the 2011 Championship. I have liked Tony since I could crawl. The first race I actually remember watching, although I'm sure I watched ones before, is the 2008 Daytona 500. I was at a bowling alley for my 7th birthday. Everyone was having fun bowling or playing games, meanwhile I was sitting at the bar staring at the tv. This race should have gave Tony his first 500 win. While yes, I was very excited for him to win the title in 2011, I was still so young that although I was happy it wasn't the greatest thing ever. Now here we are, 9 years later. Non of my favorite teams have won a Championship. I have had 4 come close but no cigar. If Tony could have won the Championship in lets say 2016, his final year or if he was still driving today, I would weep like a baby, with no shame at all. With everything that he has gone through, him winning would be just like if I won. Even though he doesn't drive in NASCAR anymore he will forever be my favorite driver and honestly my favorite celebrity. Smoke will rise!

2011 was the best of the decade. Everything you want racing wise, was there. The improved COT (Gen 5 car) that resembles Gen 4 in some ways, Bayne win at Daytona 500, 3 wide photofinish at Spring Talladega, Gordon/Johnson battle in Atlanta, Ambrose winning the Glen, and Stewart winning half the Chase. Sadly we might not see that type of tiebreaker points finish anytime soon because of the current playoff format. Along with high horsepower racing. If NASCAR wants to keep the postseason for entertaining purpose, this 2011 Chase format is a way to go. Only tweak is add bonus points for regular season performance. Like 1st place earns 10 points and every position dropping by 1 point making 10th place have 1 point.
