I am glad it doesn't involve removing the dashboard and messing with the wires. On a modern car like this, all sorts of things can go wrong after you mess around with the wiring. I am also glad to see someone with the same car as mine (but different color) so I know exactly what to expect rather than viewing a video for a different car and having none of it match up.
When you remove the four 6 mm bolts that hold the cover of the heater core, the top one is difficult to reach. With the ignition turned to "on," turn your thermostat to hot , not cold so that the white arm moves out of the way making the top bolt accessible.

bro you awesome i was going crazy on why only on the driver vent and no the other sides i tough it was the blend door also until i saw your video thank you so much i did the heater core FIX!!!!!!!! thank you
I have a jetta 2014 and I have the same problem. I'm great full for this video. I fix everything myself. I really like the tips you gave. I would of liked to have seen the the process of the coolant being drained out from the hose. Only because I don't want to guess which hose I'm going to in hook.
Sorry I didn’t show that. But there should only be two rubber hoses going into the radiator - one near the top and one near the bottom. Just disconnect the one at the bottom, make sure you have a pan to catch the antifreeze, and your good to go. If you keep the radiator cap on while you remove the hose it will help keep the antifreeze from coming out so fast and making more of a mess. Just another tip.
2014 Passat TDI. Went without much heat last winter while waiting for the dealer to get a core to replace under warranty. Now that winter is here again, we’ve realize that we STILL only have partial heat. (For us, passenger side is better.) Now the deal wants $300 for the blend door actuator and $1,300 for labor. No way, when I can buy the OEM part for $135 or a knock-off for $39. BL;DR: if you need to replace the core, do the stupid actuator at the same time.
Thanks for the video, passat 2015 here it was tight as hell behind the motor. I am stuck Putting back the upper hose on the heater core, a gap left and it is leaking really slowly, any idea to help putting it back together ?
Great video! Thanks. Frustrating for me in that i have the new core in but the connector pipes won't fully reach the pipes on the core, about 1/2 inch to go. Won't budge. Can I just connect the pipes with heater hose and clamps?
Yeah you can do that. I actually have another video where I changed the heater core on a Chrysler 200 and I did that very thing. Here’s the link to that video. ua-cam.com/video/XI3heIrfw5o/v-deo.html

Those line are really soft aluminum. They bend really easily. And when they are corroded they don’t come apart easily. Make sure you have the lines unbolted from the fire wall in the engine compartment. You may need someone to help you pull. One pull from the engine side and the other pull from inside the car. They don’t move much but there is just enough room to get them apart.
Sorry bro I tried doing it without too. I just had to open it in the end. It was hard but at least I didn’t have to fork out labour fees on my mechanic opening the bonnet

Hi I've got a Passat cc and I can hear like a low whining in the car but not in the engine bay. I've read that it's due to heater core blockage and the pump struggling to push coolant through, but I am still getting heat??
That’s certainly a possibility. This is a common problem on these vehicles. If your coolant hasn’t been changed and cooling system flushed in a long time, I would try that first. But if that doesn’t change anything then you could try replacing the heater core.
@@pjhorn5307 Ive had a technician look at it and apparently in my case the low whining/ rushing noise is the fuel pump. I have a 2014 Passat tsi my heat isn’t blowing hot and theirs this ticking noise from the top of the dash when I set the climate control to defrost, do u think it’s the heater core or actuator and if the actuator do you have to remove the core to get to the actuator ?
On this vehicle the blend door actuator is just above and forward of the heater core. On a 2014 it may be the same however there’s a good chance it could be different. You just have to get under there and look.
Was this a Denso heater core? I'm struggling to remove the same one from my 2013 Golf GTD at the moment, everything I've seen online (including the Haynes manual) seems to reference the Valeo one and I can't figure out exactly how to remove the pipes from mine on the inside so I can remove it.
I thought my problem was the blend door too but the OBD11 I bought confirmed that the doors were all moving correctly... I added Forté Bio-Degreaser to the coolant and ran that through the car for 400 miles and that definitely made an improvement. We're gonna get it out today, one way or another, so we can flush it properly - fingers crossed I don't have to replace it!
Sorry, I can’t remember now what brand the heater core was. But if what you have are two clamps like this one, it took me some time to pull the lines apart after I got the clamps off. There’s not much room in there to move the lines around to separate them. They will disconnect, ya just gotta be patient with it and keep working it apart.
@@TSter504 On this vehicle it was a nut. After taking the nut off the hose assembly comes loose from the fire wall. And I needed that clearance in order to get the tubes disconnected from the heater core. It was easy mounting that hose assembly back to the fire wall. But if it had been a bolt rather than a nut I would imagine that would make it more difficult lining up that bolt hole.
I don't really expect to be impressed with Volkswagen either as far as trying to repair some things go. I do like Volkswagen for attention to detail. There are little things you may not have noticed. ever opened the trunk and lifted the spare tire cover up? That handle is made to hook onto the edge of the trunk opening. I also think that it is a comfortable car too. I couldn't say that at all about a Corolla I had as a rental one time but that heap of junk is a whole other topic.
