RIP Emmanuelle Riva (February 24, 1927 - January 27, 2017), aged 89 And RIP Jean-Louis Trintignant (December 11, 1930 - June 17, 2022), aged 91 You both will be remembered as legends.
I would highly recommend this film to anyone who is deeply caring & has ever thought about growing old. This is the most amazing film I think I have ever seen! It made me laugh & smile, many times & once it really made me jump & scream out loud, (if you watch it you will understand) ... but most of all, I could not take my eyes nor my emotions away from the Screen. I give it a standing ovation :)
Calling Emanuelle Riva to the oscar gala and giving the best actress award to that girl from silver linings was much more than an insult. It was insulting art, acting and cinema as a whole. Certainly with age you will understand, you are too young.
You can thank Harvey Weinstein for that. Anyway, she had the BAFTA and Cesar so everything is okay. The Americans can award the plaything of the predator.
That was really really sad. I wish Emmanuelle won that year. One of the very best performances. If Emmanuelle had to lose that year, it should have been Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty.
This is happening in my life right now. My wife only 42 suffered a Massive SDH (Sub-Dural Hematoma). Although she is without body mobility she is somewhat cognitive now. Finally off a vent. When she became first cognitive she did not want to be like that. For some reason I saw this movie going through channels - read the subtext - watched it and thought it very depressing. I hope that no-one ever has to go through that.
Gerry Abarca Garry, Life is like that. We as a human, fail to realize the worth of life and love until we fate-forced arrive to a point where we open the eyes.
Gerry Abarca I'm sorry you are going through this. I've worked in hospice for awhile. I think love can be such a blessing and a curse. It's a wonderful drug that adds depth into life. It's such an unselfish feeling to want to do anything for another person, until you realize you don't ever think of letting go. I've met and talked to people of different faiths ages and relationships and even saw a twin saying goodbye to another. I wish you the best in the most unfair and impossible situation, but human beings get through impossible things more times that they give themselves credit for. The only thing I can really write that seemed to bring somewhat of a smile to me, was talking to someone after they lost the one they loved. He said, "She loved me and I loved her. We reminded each other that much more as the days went by. I'm going to see some friends and family right now after you leave not because I want to. I'm going to get through this because if it were me who left this world before she did, I would think I was the lucky one for not having to deal with her loss. I would have wanted her to be happy with or without me. She taught me to live. So I'm to go out there and try my best." Whatever happens, I hope both of you get through this.
Its a great, sad love story. When you truly love someone is when you know that until death do us part is true...only true love can persevere, have patience and endure all things.
to those interested, the piano music at the beginning of the trailer's is by Bach, the bwv number is 639, "I call to thee, Jesus Christ", it was also used in Tarkovsky's Solaris but was played with organ. :)
what an odd thing to put two exclamation points after. And why proclaim it at all. is it a boast? is it a cry for help? is it an endorsement of ...this movie trailer, is it a plangent cry in the wilds of the internet for someone to echo back - me too...or is it just, look at me i am saying things on the internet.
In the final months of her life, a retired music teacher and her husband of sixty years struggle with the debilitating effects of two strokes on both her health and her quality of life. As Georges cares for the increasingly unhappy Anne, the pair finds the nature of their life together irrevocably changed.
I am 16 and american, and I prefer foreign films to hollywood stuff. Please don't generalize, as Michael Haneke is one of my all time favorite directors.
I'd rank the nominees that year: 1. Emmanuelle Riva 2. Quvenzhané Wallis 3. Jennifer Lawrence 4. Jessica Chastain 5. Naomi Watts And would have cut Naomi Watts for Marion Cotillard.
Still think about this film. I've told my partner in our old age I hope she doesn't have to live alone if I were to die first. It'd be too painful for her to bear. I'd rather shoulder that burden even if it means she goes first
Ce film questionne sur la parité et l amour. La respect de la volonté du défunt. La démence et la Vérité. Beau film avec Isabelle Juppé et toujours parfaite.

Is this one of those artsy fartsy pictures where there are REALLY LONG PAUSES where nothing happpens, dragging on forever and everyone talks about depressing shit? If it is I'll pass, Ingmar Bergman did it a hell of a lot better and he at least entertained you in the process.
Another cold, cold movie by Haneke. This one's better than some of the others, though. Isabelle Hupert is the perfect actress for Haneke. She good and very technical in her effects as an actress. No warmth, but people who enjoy watching suffering know Haneke will deliver it as art.
There is something genuinely unsentimental about his portrayal of this elderly couple. It gives them so much more life, even in the last stages of their lives. They are allowed to bf angry, unlivable, raw, frustrated.. instead of say, wise and all-too-patient and always loving. They aren’t caricatures but rather individuals who have found themselves in bodies that are slowly breaking down. And yes, that feeling of finding yourself in such a fragile body is itself cold.
A very deep movie. You'd have to be pretty fucking stupid tomorrow fully understand what they're going through. Although I didn't like it much, I definitely learned to appreciate such a masterpiece.

This is the type of art that genuinely hurts your soul. This film was _phenomenal,_ but I don't think I could ever watch it a second time.
Agreed.
From Hiroshima Mon Amour to Amour. Emmanuelle Riva had an incredible career. RIP.

Harvey Weinstein thought otherwise...
Wow... This is simply breathtaking. When you find a movie like this, you treasure it as one would treasure a valuable heirloom!
this movie talks more about real love than all the american comedies in the last 20 years.

Which one?

I dont think there is a director whose films are more soul crushing than Haneke's

I can't believe Jennifer Lawrence beat this...
JLaw fans come a knocking in 3, 2, 1...
I'm Agree... The little girl from "Beasts of the southern wild" was better too.
She was good in SLP but come on that's just shouting... like she does that ALL THE TIME
Emanuelle Riva deserve the Oscar!
Jennifer Lawernce is so overrated.
I'd rank the nominees that year:
1. Emmanuelle Riva
