@@robm5008 you dont get to blame slavery on black people. it doesnt change the fact that they suffered. Even when slavery ended, there was the Jim Crow laws. Doesnt care how it started, it still happened.
A lot of people really don't understand how bad American slavery was. This wasn't regular old world slavery, this was chattel slavery, you were born a slave, you died a slave, your children died slaves, and your children's children died slaves. You could never hope to be anything but a slave. We have never come to terms with our demons as a country. Slavery lasted 245 years officially, and after all was said and done, slaves and children of slaves never got any kind of mental help (and go figure, mental health became a huge taboo in the AA community), no official apology, and not even a single day of recognition for their suffering. It was like America just wanted to make it all go away as a country, ignore it, change the subject, and now we are paying the price of our actions.
Well, societies have always had slavery, it was often a natural consequence when a nation conquered another nation. Roman slavery is often referred to as "old world slavery", but "new world" (i.e. the Americas) slavery was really the first time the world had seen a systemic institution where an entire group of people were forced into slavery for generations with no hope of ever rising to a position of power, by virtue of simply fitting a certain phenotype. It was the first time the world had seen the use of racial classifications to justify the subordination of a people, and it was the first time where a society was almost entirely dependent on slave labor in order to function (hence needing ways to justify it's use). The slaves literally were the economy. The southern states could sell cotton and tobacco cheaper than any other competitor, because they didn't have to pay their workers, and the didn't have to worry about them quitting. The wealth created during that 245 year time period was astronomical.

But the link is very long, so I'm not going to bother giving it to you. In the interview it says that blacks dislike the Irish more than anyone. I have nothing against the Irish at all. I like Bobby Kennedy. He was a nice guy. I'm just stating the truth though. The Irish were accused by abolitionist for supporting slavery. The Irish didn't want the blacks to become free because it would mean that they would have to compete for labour, especially if a lot of blacks immigrated to the North after being freed.

Why are people commenting that this is an 'anti white' film? It's based on the history of slavery and how slaves were treated, I'm sorry but do you expect individuals who have human beings as 'property' to be wholesome people? Unravel yourself from your bubble wrap and stop being so dramatic for goodness sake
You know I’m having the same type that people are blaming “The Shape of Water”. Yes, it is graphic. But it’s beautifully done. I may see “12 Years a Slave” soon, thanks to your comment. I may agree with your opinion.
This movie was one of the most moving, emotional films I have ever seen. It's been years since I last watched it and this trailer still gives me chills. It breaks my heart to know how cruel people can be. To keep other humans as your property, because of the colour of their skin. The worst part; slavery still exists in some parts of the world.
I was really surprised to hear that there was also White Slavery that made it from Europe to North America, which lasted for decades... I have heard that the European Monarchies, including the 1%ers have always felt that everyone else is beneath them...
Slavery was one of the most awful things of humanity. But I would like a film about native americans abuse, they were killed, abused and have no rights until now. In their own land. Noone talks about the indigenous as they didn´t exist. Sad. They are still tabu. And noone defend them, not even black people, who suffered the same.
+Laura Adriana nah, I see torture to death, demonization of the innocent, and killing thousands in the name of a beautiful religion that was never indented to be used in such a way is worse.
this was an all-star ensemble; didnt realize her or Brad Pitt was in this but everyone gave great performances. Michael Fassbender was so insane and scary in this
It's amazing that Solomon's story is being heard 165 years later. This movie had me in tears. I'm so heartbroken for what black people had to go through and so sorry for the horrible treatment they had to endure. I pray for the healing of those that are affected by the history and the way black people were treated. Much love and respect goes out to the beautiful black race.
🙏🌻African people are very beautiful inside out. Their hearts are pure. They are very helpful. But, i don't know why on earth 🌍 this feeling of racism exists in humans. To me, humanity is everything. -- Sunil Bharat 🇮🇳
I watched this movie and it was saddest thing I ever seen in my life... Slavey is one of the worst thing in history. I felt bad for black people who hard on them by evil people. I always respect to black people in my heart and wish racist never exist. This world had gone mad by full evil people who have no soul.. I actually wish we create build a great friendship with race and never hatred together on earth. I'm white btw.
You are one beautiful person that's going to heaven when you die, can I please just let you have everything I have? You're a beautiful person inside and out.
After watching this movie I vowed never to use the N word again. Whether listening to it from hip hop songs or joking to each other. It's a disgusting word and how they used it against black people saddens me. People wonder why black people act quite hostile and aggressive nowadays and always use the racist card. But I think we all would if we ever knew what their people went through. I mean why does having black skin colour make them less than any other person with lighter skin?! I'm deeply saddened to know about their history and it affects me greatly. But all the men who treated them harshly and unfairly will be all accountable for their actions once they face the Almighty Lord on a day which no man can hide.

Do back people realize not that white liberals create these type of movies to stir hatred between the races? Democrat party, who founded the KKK, and was against civil rights still divide the country more than ever. Many black people don't even see it. Don't believe me? Do you see any Democrats protesting these types of movies? They supposedly don't even like to see a confederate flag but they don't say a word about this? Do you know why? Democrats need racial division, always have, always will.
The movie was incredible, but I can not go through with watching it again. Not because it's not or anything. Certain scenes were hard enough to sit through even the first time.
better 12 years of school than 12 years of holy book. It's a good thing murica said fuck theocracy, or else we'd be gunning people down today for following a slightly different version of the bible. We'd all be jackasses without those 12 years of school.
even in the U.S.A., human trafficking, trapping children in marriages, etc. still happens. And in the U.S.A., slavery *cannot* be a thing of the past when it still affects our present as black people.
Really sad to see racism in the comments and ignorant remarks. Such a great movie, no matter what race you are. If this movie was shown to the north and West coasts during the 1800's, I believe slavery would've ended sooner. Sad, but it's history. Respect it and learn from it.
Some people said this movie only won Best Picture because it deals with racism and slavery, but here’s the thing: it didn’t just win because it’s a film with important subject matter, it won because it’s a great movie. This film IMO 100% deserved to win Best Picture, anybody who says otherwise is a hater. It’s a true masterpiece of cinema, it’s hard to watch and depressing, but it’s a well-crafted, brilliant, and essential film that should be required viewing. Everyone should see this amazing movie and never forget.
Well, I'm certainly not a hater, especially since our one son has a, (as my wife puts it, ''A Child Of Color'') I argue with her all the time because I've always felt that when a person says, A Person Of Color, it's pretty much like saying, Colored People... I mean that's my opinion anyways... But hey, if I'm wrong, so far no one has corrected me... At any rate, I certainly hope that one day everyone in this country will start acting like we are all Brothers and Sisters, and also Americans... As for this movie, I just figured that as long as it won at least 1 award, then cool, because it was a pretty good movie... But there's like only 75 or 80 people that decide what Actors, and/or Movies will win The Academy Award, so with that said, I believe that there's a lot of folks that get screwed out of receiving an award, least we not forget, Hollywood is a pretty fucked up place...
First heard about this movie in 2014, a lot of people were talking about it and I heard about how good it was and how tragic it was, and I tend to care about social issues so I wanted to watch it. This movie is heart breaking, and I absolutely love how it doesn't romanticize any of the abuse that was suffered in it.
For the white people or anyone saying "this wasn't me" "I have nothing to do with this", no. We ALL have EVERYTHING to do with this. Every race, ethnicity, whatever has EVERYTHING to do with this. We must all learn from the past to ensure that the past will never return to be repeated. We are all one. No matter which part of the world, outside America whatever. We are all in ONE world. We must stick together and unite as ONE. Or be sure that the past WILL repeat itself. Only worse.

This film sits right in with one of the top 5 films of 2013 and the one best for dealing with the issue of slavery. I can't fathom treating someone as lesser of a human just because of the colour of their skin. Slavery is the most heinous of all crimes against humanity. To have control over every aspect of another person's life is disgusting. The disturbing part is there are more slaves in the world now than there has been at any other time.
I never cried this much watching a movie. I knew that slavery is one of the worst things that happened in human history, but seeing it on screen, I just broke down. To this day I ask myself how something so horrible could have happened.
“To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child. For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records of history?” ― Cicero “If you don't know history, then you don't know anything. You are a leaf that doesn't know it is part of a tree. ” ― Michael Crichton “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” ― George Santayana
Can we all stop trying to justify American Slavery saying that slavery happened in all parts of the world? You're basically saying one is better than the other when all instances were terrible. So STFU with your long, pointless arguments and enjoy the movie.
Every single American should watch this movie. This is our history, a vital and unforgettable piece of our history that shows the true nature and brutality of slavery. We must NEVER forget those like Solomon and million others who have senslessly suffered in the name of racism. We must NEVER allow humanity to regress back into this pit of darkness and hatred.
Slavery started in Africa. Your own government sold the Europeans slaves. They then brought them to THE Americas and forced them to build the European empires, which was the US. They had no use for Native Americans because they died from Europeans diseases and/or went back to their village. Africans were immune to the diseases and couldn't run back to their village so that's why they used Africans instead.
@may nostyl is right. We were made slaves in our own countries. East African countries were colonized from the beginning of 1890s. Our ancestors went through alot of unimaginable horrors. Am a Kenyan and my grandfather would always tell us how it was before we got our independence, not in great details and never graphically ofcourse because of the content but we got the gist of the stories combined with what we learnt in school. It was horrific to say the least. These types of movies try to explain to an audience what happened with 12 years a slave as an example but they can never disclose or act out everything because it was truly that barbaric. On a side note, if I were to critic I'd say that this is not how Africans spoke. Most of them were West Africans so the dialect used would be pijin English, and it would be broken since they were uneducated. With all said, this does not take away the fact that the story told is about the Africans that were sold as slaves and the horrors they had to go through in another man's land. This is a story told from their perspective and we must honor that. So @Edwin Fanice please do learn your history well enough because our ancestors were enslaved and colonized.

I was glad to see that this movie won an Oscar for best picture. It's very powerful and important for everyone to see. It sucks how most people don't understand anything about slavery like it's a no big deal. I think everyone needs to see it, so they'll know how brutal and severe slavery was. Who knows. Maybe racism will die down. Overall, perfect movie.

I just watched this movie's depiction of a pretty accurate history. It is very well written, acted and directed. It makes me feel shame that a man could treat a human this way just because they have a different color of skin. This movie is very touching and sometimes hard to watch, but I strongly recommend it!

This movie was SO DAMN GOOD. The character portrayal, the struggle for survival, and even though it was hard to watch at times, the reality of it. People who don't understand the quality of this movie have a problem.
I cried my soul out watching this movie. It really braked my heart in a thousand pieces... I believe the movie was even more powerful thanks to the insane talent of those actors. It was incredible and heartbreaking. I was shaking while crying like a fool at the end of the movie... I'm speechless...

Hey people on here. Stop insulting the blacks and stop insulting the whites. History is history that we all need to know and learn. Its a movie that shows a piece of history its a good one to learn from but that also doesn't mean that all white people nowadays are going to try and to enslave everybody. And there were some white people back in the day who did try fighting for the slaves and their freedom. So why don't we all just watch and enjoy the movie and a piece of a history about a man who went through a lot and get along!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely brilliant film unfortunately some Americans still want this in the 21st century and won’t move on from the past I strongly recommend this film to anyone
Born a free man, experienced culture, fine arts and taken away from his family and placed into the middle of the very lifestyle that his parents persevered to keep him from experiencing for 12 years...that had to be the hardest pill to swallow.
This movie really broke my heart. It's sickens me how society was back in that era...Some white people were so sadistic and ruthless with slaves, and from what I saw in the movie, they received pleasure from the pain. Many of the scenes were too disturbing to watch...But I'm glad this movie came out to expose those who treated others monstrously then and how society is united now.
I remember i watched a bit of this movie. And i have yet to watch it full. The way they made this movie is so heavy but honestly a GREAT movie. In school slavery has always been a touchy subject. Just the fact that i grew up around Black family while i was younger ( no im not black but grew up in a black/latino church, we all family) So once i got older and learned about slavery that shit is heartbreaking. I still dont understand how people could just torture a living human being just for the color of their skin, like this man was KIDNAPPED . I see it today happening, not literal slavery but they get looked at different when going in the store or walking around like WTF?! It pistes me off. But i just pray God heals everyone from this sickness and gives us PEACE.
I’ve read the book, three times, and watched this movie once a year over the last 8 years. This is by far the greatest movie I’ve ever seen. I recommend a book as well “The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism”. If you have not read it, don’t bother commenting. If you want to comment, go read it first.

This wonderful Oscar movie shows us that one should not be judged by the color of skin but by the color of soul. It was a just spot in the American history that cruel slavers never recognized this.
I still think it's a crime Fassbender didn't win the Oscar for Best Supporting for this movie. Everything about his portrayal of Epps is one of the most convincing performances I've ever seen. His Southern accent is on point too. He legit sound exactly like my backwoods country daddy. Haha.
I’m glad I was born in the generation I’m in. Back in them days were horrible. This movie is really good and it shows what the black community had to go through and it’s so sad. I would never hate someone by the color of their skin. You respect me. I respect you. And I will make sure my children will be that way as well.
A brilliant movie on oppression, intense suffering, hope, and the strength to push through. Steve McQueen is genius and the actors were superb. For anyone out there suffering, I hope you find the strength to carry on and build a better tomorrow.
This is one of those movies where you just sit down and watch without moving, feeling totally frozen until the end. The fact that it´s based on true events makes it 10 times heavier to watch. There is absolutly no way to apologize for what my race has done to the african american people. Slavery is by far ONE of the worst things that humans have ever done to their brothers and sisters. To say one human is worth less then the other just because of his skin colour is ridiculous.

Every man and women has the same right as everybody else. Nobody should be treated differently, its a free world. a free country and everybody is a free man or women to do as they like, nobody is the world can ever tell them want to do!! They make their own choices, don't let anybody tell you different!! No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. dax Africans' slaves were not tortured and treated less than humans. They lived in the same house with their masters, slept under the same roof, ate the same food. They were to be set free at a certain time, so don't compare this to American slavery and there is African history that you can study. Your people invaded the continent and took most of the slave. The ones that were sold by other Africans were prisoners of war. But their number is negligible compared to the village that were deserted due to slave masters invasion. Don't even try to lie here or quote a slave master's account because liars is what they all are to me.
dax What you are saying is technically correct; African slaves were often bought by Europeans from other Africans. However, as Glenda pointed out, Africans envisioned slavery very differently from the form it took in the New World. Slavery in Africa and as it existed throughout the Old World, including Western empires like Rome, was not a birthmark. It was a liminal state, often as a result of capture during war. The virulence of the racism that we have come to define slavery by was created in part to justify the brutality of slavery in the Americas. This film is not trying to place blame. No one is doubting the sacrifices your family may have made for this country and yes, for anyone who says otherwise, the Civil War was fought over the issue of slavery and of the 600,000 white Americans who laid down their lives in that conflict, many died for that cause. 12 Years isn't trying to simplify history--it's trying to remind us that we cannot simply talk about slavery as a redemptive history. It is also a criminal history. American cinema tends to gloss over that fact and reduce slavery and emancipation to white men in courtrooms and state houses talking out the problem. Here, McQueen introduces a new wrinkle to that narrative.
Was tough to watch. Really tough. And I have many good friends of all races. Jewish, haitian, white, Asian. Black and married to Hispanic. Love you all.

Oh don't be so childish. Take your uneducated comments elsewhere.
You know I’m having the same type that people are blaming “The Shape of Water”. Yes, it is graphic. But it’s beautifully done. I may see “12 Years a Slave” soon, thanks to your comment. I may agree with your opinion.
The film itself isn't anti-white in the slightest. Many people in the comments are though

Free state of Jones was another powerful movie.

I was really surprised to hear that there was also White Slavery that made it from Europe to North America, which lasted for decades... I have heard that the European Monarchies, including the 1%ers have always felt that everyone else is beneath them...
fortunately little by little slavery will disappear.
+Laura Adriana has a similiar root with Christianity maybe, that's why indigenous became irrelevant and forgotten
+Ide v perhaps.
"Was"? Slavery still goes on today, especially in places like Africa. Slavery isn't over yet and it probably never will be.
Flora Garland it will, just be patient, you won't know what the future holds, no one knows
+Laura Adriana nah, I see torture to death, demonization of the innocent, and killing thousands in the name of a beautiful religion that was never indented to be used in such a way is worse.

One of the most moving movies I've seen in a really long time. A true work of art.

Some people don’t realize slavery isn’t a thing of a past that’s solved. There are still thousands people inslaved in many parts of the world.
Sad that it doesn’t get talked about as much as it should, child sex trafficking and shit still goes on today it’s disgusting
even in the U.S.A., human trafficking, trapping children in marriages, etc. still happens.

Wow, that's truly an amazing way to look at a movie such as this and learn form it. Well said Joshua Hemminger.

Well, I'm certainly not a hater, especially since our one son has a, (as my wife puts it, ''A Child Of Color'')
I argue with her all the time because I've always felt that when a person says, A Person Of Color, it's pretty much like saying, Colored People...
Easily the best film of 2013, glad it beat Gravity. There's so many subtle little details making it so good.

Only worse.

I just realised how lucky i am to be born and raised in EastAfrica my ancestors didn't have to go through all this
Edwin Fanice Instead we were made slaves in our own countries
Slavery started in Africa. Your own government sold the Europeans slaves. They then brought them to THE Americas and forced them to build the European empires, which was the US. They had no use for Native Americans because they died from Europeans diseases and/or went back to their village. Africans were immune to the diseases and couldn't run back to their village so that's why they used Africans instead.
@may nostyl is right.

As sickening as these practices were racism will likely never go away.
This is easily one of the best movies in the entire history.
I remember i watched a bit of this movie. And i have yet to watch it full.
The way they made this movie is so heavy but honestly a GREAT movie. In school slavery has always been a touchy subject. Just the fact that i grew up around Black family while i was younger ( no im not black but grew up in a black/latino church, we all family)
So once i got older and learned about slavery that shit is heartbreaking.

Amazing movie. Incredible. If you havent already, watch it!
dax This is history. Solomon Northup was a real person, went through this then wrote a book about it. The movie is based off the book.
dax Africans' slaves were not tortured and treated less than humans.
12 Years A Slave . . . sounds like my last employment contract.
This is the most beautiful depiction of why black lives matter, and why is this movie EXTREMELY UNDERRATED?!
Was tough to watch. Really tough. And I have many good friends of all races. Jewish, haitian, white, Asian. Black and married to Hispanic. Love you all.
