Qantas bosses under fire for bringing ‘wrong group of people’ to inquiry

- Senator Budget McKenzie has issued a warning to Qantas bosses about the “swag of questions” on notice after claiming the company brought the “wrong group of people” to the Senate inquiry.
A parliamentary inquiry is investigating the government's decision to block extra Qatar Airways flights from coming into Australia.
Ms McKenzie questioned Qantas chairman Richard Goyder and CEO Vanessa Hudson about why the company did not bring any members of its government relations team.
“I do think it beggar’s belief that a company of your sophistication and muscle has come here today with precisely the wrong group of people to answer Senators’ questions about the relation between Qantas Group and this government,” she said during the inquiry.
Ms McKenzie warned there will be a “swag of questions” on notice for Qantas’ government relations team.
“If one out of the seven is on holidays I would hope that Qantas Group would show this committee the respect that it needs to and make sure those questions are answered.”
She added the inquiry is a “good opportunity” for Qantas to repair its reputation.
Let’s be honest, there’s no way they were going to miss their flight. It was already canceled.

If U think Qantas and Jetstar are a mess then feel free to travel to the U.S. where their airlines are appalling......many of the flights are cancelled because they don't have enough flight attendents....Why don't they have enough flight attendents? Because there work agreements are horrendous.......SouthWest airlines ended up being a real joke at the beginning of this year because of their flight routes. All the planes were flying to destinations with baggage and without passengers......Do you know hoe bad this is if you are stranded at city where it is snowing but they have already sent you baggage to your destination? Airports were getting over run with bags, people had prams and warm coats sent to their destination so they were freezing for 2 weeks and all the hire cars had been rented out.

How the heck could the Qantas board allow their CEO to offload $17 million in Qantas shares, when they and the CEO would have known that there were major problems about to arise in a matter of days - and which would probably affect the share price. Is it being investigated by ASIC for the possibility of acting on insider knowledge?

At first viewing, my estimation of Senator McKenzie has gone up a heap. Finally one politician that at least is trying their hardest to get a result that will benefit the people of Australia first (regardless of what he or she has done before this time, now we are focussed on getting Qantas fixed).

Not really if she was on game she would have issued written instructions naming Qantas head of governance and Joyce as summonsed witnesses to attend. These pratts knew what the committee wanted ie someone who had liaised with federal minister and deliberately sent representatives that had no such involvement. Next time summons or direct head of top three of governance and Joyce. That way you get to cross examine three different witnesses separately and watch the truth come out under cross examination.

Totally appreciate the last remark to the QANTAS group that they and their baggage make their flight. There must be someone else running the airline because their answers to the senate inquiry suggest these three ,the probably don’t know how to book a flight anyway. Sadly, the corporate world they inhabit will protect and allow them to walk away with financial compensation to sweeten the pill. Not so for the customers with Qantas credits .

Absolutely brilliant questioning by the Madam chair of this Senate inquiry. Corporate Australia please take notice - do not endorse 'Political positions'. Best to remain apolitical. Always. It comes across as ramming a political position onto people. Otherwise you risk losing the support of your employees, stakeholders and importantly customers!
Further this shows an enormous political naivety by the Qantas Executive team and surprisingly an experienced Board of Directors. Always best for Corporate Australia to remain apolitical. Australians want to fly to their destinations in safety with a minimum of fuss and not have Political messages thrust onto them.

The entire concept that companies can get public funding and ignore questions has to stop. If there's no penalty for horsing around and bullshitting, why hold the hearing?
"Question on notice" is a defeat for transparency. It means the question will be sent in writing and maybe, one day, a written response will be received. (After any and all media interest has gone and whatever answer is given won't be reported on) The government is being way too nice about this.
