I don't like when people say quadrupeds have knees that bend backwards, when it's really the heel. It's better to take the actual anatomy of the animal into account when animating, and i also think it's much more intuitive to consider the actual foot, because then you can more easily relate to what bends where and how. In addition to that, the human/ostrich method is really flawed, because the human's knee becomes the horse's wrist, foot becomes toe, hips become elbow, and then you're missing the horse's shoulder and shoulder blades, that you have to try and infer from the rest. Especially when teaching animation, i usually don't recommend cutting corners, because beginner animators will quickly get confused Though, it's not a bad idea to split the animal in half at first, makes it much easier to teach the walk mechanic if you consider two bipeds with whacky anatomy instead. But hey, that's just my input on the subject. And a little step by step tutorial is always useful for learning animators looking for quick access to extra information, so that's cool.
Hi Dong Chang, I love all your videos. I studying animation but I still don't know how to composition anime with AE. I hope you can make one video about that soon : )
How do you deal with burning out or did you ever feel that you didn't animate for a months that you're out of touch? How do you get back your animating skill?
I hope you don’t mind a small correction! The joint you’re referring to isn’t actually the knee, but the ankle. Like many animals (including dogs and horses), ostriches walk on their toes, and their anatomical ankle is midway up the leg. It’s a common misunderstanding, as the ankle can look like a “backward knee.” Even horses have a heel bone, just below the ankle. I hope this helps clarify, and thank you so much for the great tutorial!
Ostrich knees don't actually bend backwards; that's their heel-- Their knees are high up by their rib cage.
Wow! That's great, I always thought that it was hard to animate animals walking but now it's just practice
this tip is also in the book by animator Richard Williams, his book is the Animator Survival Kit ❤
Love your animations! So helpful!
