    The hair dryer stand thing is a disability device that’s being sold to everyone else. And we’re (speaking as a disabled person who has multiple hand issues) kind of accustomed to having stuff everywhere-this one gets points for not being institutional beige plastic.

    • @kayleymelissa
      @kayleymelissa  4 роки тому +93

      Oh that makes sense!! I’m learning to be more inclusive in the way I see and talk about things, but missed the mark here. I’m sorry! How do you feel about disability devices being revamped and sold mainstream? I can see how it would be nice in some ways and invalidating in others.

    • @dandylionsloth446

      @@kayleymelissa I'm also disabled, I don't mind disability device being sold to everyone because that brings the cost down for those of that, can a lot of help from the device. I would have never thought to look for a hair drier stand, I just air dry my hair since I can't really blow dry my hair. Thanks for being willing to listen!

    • @khills
      @khills 4 роки тому +88

      Kayley Melissa No worries! It can be pretty opaque if it’s not something you have firsthand experience with. 😊 The big benefit to having assistance devices “go mainstream” is that you get better colors/design. 😂 My hands don’t work well, but that doesn’t mean I want everything that helps me end up being institutional beige. And unfortunately, “fun” colors rarely exist until someone decides to market an accessibility device to the larger public. 🤷‍♀️ So I suppose in that way it highlights the frustration-on the one hand, folks who need accessible devices are a guaranteed market. On the other hand, it means companies don’t have to work as hard for our business, so they often don’t make any effort.
      The really obnoxious thing is when folks go down the “omg that’s so lazy” criticism when reviewing accessibility devices (or leaving comments). A few years ago, a device to help people put on socks and shoes went viral, and absolutely the main comment was “how lazy do you have to be to not bend over to pull on your socks and shoes.” 🙄 But obviously, that can describe a range of disabilities, or sports or other temporary/acute injuries, chronic illnesses, or even pregnancy! Folks, when criticizing these devices that allow for more independence, seem to forget that eventually, disability does come for us all-whether it’s thru age or injury or disease. (Or pregnancy, which is not an injury or disease, but can still end up putting someone in a place of needing assistive devices, whether it’s because of a baby-full belly or swollen hands or whatever.)
      Another youtuber who reviews kitchen gadgets, Barry Lewis, has a really great intro that just asks folks in comments to remember that some of the things he’s reviewing may help people who have disabilities get back into the kitchen, and that’s a good thing-and that those gadgets just may not be aimed at folks who don’t need help. It’s a pretty cool disclaimer and one I don’t see too often on UA-cam, and does seem to help him think “who might this benefit?” as well as keeping comments from veering towards “that’s lazy!”

      I was in a bad car accident last year and can't hold anything over my head anymore. At the time I didn't know anyone else with similar limitations. I had given up on being able to dry my hair when I saw the hair dryer stand in a buzzfeed article. Im very happy it went mainstream because I dont think I would have discovered it if it was being marketed to a smaller audience. Also, to answer Kayley's question in video about where normal people keep their's, I have a linen closet in my bathroom and I just keep it in the bottom of the closet when its not in use.

    • @khills
      @khills 4 роки тому +8

      Oh, and Maddie Furse and M Bailey bring up a great point-unless you’re lucky enough your insurance covers occupational therapy, or you are well-connected into a community for support, it can be really hard to know what accessibility options even exist. I’m told it’s easier for people who have used assistive devices since childhood, because schools often provide access to services or people who can give advice, and your family tends to get involved in communities where tips are exchanged for how to make life more accessible. I don’t have firsthand experience there; like many folks, I was injured as an adult and became permanently disabled from that. I’ve been very lucky to have excellent care teams with firsthand disability experience to give pointers, as well as access to occupational therapists. Just knowing there is the possibility for assistive devices makes me more likely to say “no, this hurts/doesn’t work/I need help,” and to go look for it-but that’s a privilege in itself.

    For the pony tail butt plug, you lift half your hair into like a half pony, tuck the plug under with the wider part against your scalp, then gather up the bottom half of your hair underneath the plug and wrap your ponytail holder around the whole mess! It makes a lovely perky high pony!

    Have you thought about doing a video on the best hair repair treatments based on specific hair damage? So comparing Olaplex vs Pronexa va Keratin treatments and when each is the best to be used based on damage versus hair type? There are so many treatment options out there now a days but if you use the wrong one for your hair type you will actually be doing more damage to your hair than good. Just a thought for future videos. Thanks!

    I have several ponytails I used to wear with the netting, a set of teeth, and the bungee string. U have to wrap the bungee around your bun under the ponytail after you tighten it and tuck what’s left after that. You also have to have hair that matches your color better lol. People actually thought my ponytails were real and it took me about 3 minutes to fix my hair so I loved em. I think the fact that it was from Wish means it was never gonna work anyway and I never tried a braided ponytail in that style. Also, side note, it was so embarrassing when I started dating my now husband and eventually stayed the night for the first time and had to remove that damn ponytail. My curly one also scared a few people when I laid it down say on a dresser or something.

    I've just had flashbacks to my early teens! I used to have the babyliss rope braid gadget 😂 It was definitely on trend to have tiny rope braids, potentially all of your hair done with them, channelling S Club 7 vibes. Thankfully it didn't knot or trap my hair at the time.

    I might get the blow dryer stand. If I can put a weight on it to hold it in place, it could be a life saver for me. I almost never blow dry my hair because my neck is so bad and holding my arms up makes it hurt a lot and gives me migraines, but diffusing is key to getting my most ideal waves.

    • @rosettasilvermist
      @rosettasilvermist 4 роки тому

      it's designed for people who can't keep their arms up for a long time your supposed to sit below it. Not use it to plop diffuse. So it could work well for you 🙂

    The braider thing! I had a Babyliss Crazy Braid when I was younger. It was like that, but three hooks. It came with tiny butterfly clips, and little beads that clipped on, and I LOVED IT! I'm pretty sure I used it from aged 10 fairly regularly, right up until I went to college. Once you got the hang of it it was very handy to do multiple tiny rope braids, as was the height of fashion in the early noughties.

    You should check out the Hot Heads from Thermal Hair Care. They're a microwaveable flaxseed heated shower cap that should be a little less weighty than the gel cap Anna Laura tried and the material is nice and soft. The company is created and owned by a Black woman/professional hairstylist/mom too!

    The hairdryer stand would be good if you attach a dryer hood.

    The blowdryer stand would be really helpful if you did not have use of one or both arms. I would have loved that when I broke my thumb and couldn't hold things earlier this year...

    I would try Olaplex 0, the ponytsil wine cork thing, and definitely the heated shower cap thing.

    Please do a video on tips to help moms style postpartum hair. After losing so much hair, the baby hairs are beyond crazy (and not just framing your face, they stick out everywhere on your whole scalp) And my ponytail is so thin now that I don't even think that crazy gadget you used in this
    video would get covered enough to not be visible. To top it all off, I also have a widow's peek. Help!
