  • Repair a broken wooden garage door with a 2x4. This garage door was in poor shape. The bottom board had rotten off from one side and was binding the rollers. A simple removal and straightening of the garage door lower board was in order to get this door back into working order.

    Good morning, thank you for a legitimate inexpensive diy repair. It shows creativity and cleverness. Some of these shows would have tore the garage down for this repair. Thanks for a great video. You take care and stay healthy. Good luck.

    Thank you so much for helping ordinary folks overcome the fear of actually doing it ourselves. Mine is the ditto damage of your garage the same broken gape open and the same length. Inquired about outside help and was told about $450. I myself able to fix a lot of stuff but seeing the panel has a recess that goes into the bottom 2x4 left me scratching my head about how to make a groove all the length of the wood. Your idea to just saw off the excess protruding thin layer that goes into the bottom wood is such a smart idea. and also to note from others that the door may need adjusting because of the possible shortage when sawed that is a piece of cake to adjust from the motor. Your style of narrative is also brilliant and wasted no time for us to understand completely. Some would be wanna gurus to demonstrate so poorly that it was a headache to watch them because they go over the simple task as though all are dummies.

    So glad you made this video. I called around to a few garage door repair people and all they want to so is replace, every single one of them. My garage door is not damaged at all. It's wood and just the bottom panel is bad. And not even the whole panel is bad, just the bottom part like yours. I'm tackling this as a diy project now that I watched your video.

    You've given me the inspiration to do it myself! Two questions:
    1) Before starting to take off the bottom rail, I measured it and see that it is 1 3/8" x 4 3/4". A 2 x 6 is 1 1/2 x 5 1/2". I can rip the 5 1/2 down to the right size, but should I be concerned about the difference in the width?
    2) Considering the bottom rail rotting seems to be a common problem, do you think it makes sense to look for a non-wood product, like a PVC board?

    • @appalachiandiy2415
      @appalachiandiy2415  2 роки тому +1

      Width shouldnt affect, but make it flush on the outside for the weather strip. A good weather guard paint/sealcoat should protect well but if you got the $ a plastic option could work well too

    I went to put mine down and the bottom board folded under and brought up the next one with it. Now I can't raise it (or shut it fully). I'm trying to force that door up onto the rails so I can take the wires off of the springs and replace it. This is a 15' x 7' (oddball size) very old wooden door that looks pretty close to yours! That bottom board failed finally and now I'm trying to figure out how to get the door up. If you have any suggestions, that would be cool lol. thanks again for the video!

      If anyone else runs into my situation, try and use a floor jack to jack the door up a little and then separate the top/bottom pieces, secure it, etc. I have the springs disconnected safely now as well! My last issue is trying to mate the two pieces back together because mine was held with a single bolt on each side and wooden dowels at each intersection....I've got 5 hours until it rains about half an inch so I have to figure this out :) You really got lucky with the nice bracket you have in this set up though! Mine is all weird.

Got it out without breaking anything but they are numb and in pain. So, don't do what I did kids 🤣 Not sure what to do with it now. New 15'x7' door is 6-8 weeks away. Garage doors are a pita.

    Could you have used a ratchet strap on each side of the door, used a level to strap it level, then measure up from floor to the same distance on the inside of the door, mark even points on the bottom panel, then fold the panel inside the garage and use the circular saw to make a straight and level cut to marry the new board to an even, straight(er) surface?
