Jared Polin Great video. I’ve always loved the polar bears. I’d love to see how the lens holds up indoors in lower light situations, seeing how it’s 6.3 all the way at 400.

Here in Europe we have a lot of zoos with free ranging lemurs. They just run around among the visitors. It's awesome for photos because there is no fence and no glas between you and them. One of these zoos I've been visiting for the last 4 years, their two black and white ruffed lemurs know me so well by now they sit on my lap or my shoulder and just hang out with me. They are really amazing critters! www.flickr.com/photos/mathiasappel/26773396389/
My other favorite are red pandas. Simply because they are so incredibly adorable :) www.flickr.com/photos/mathiasappel/38630014066

Can you make a video about lightroom because adobe make a shit job on it and exemples are multiple. For exemple no layer / name thing on radial filters, no color to distinguish wich is wich. Radial / local filter no black / white, only shadows and highlight, ECT. The print module is a pain and you can't even zoom on it. We really need your help to improve this fucking software with your damn voice.
Working every day with lightroom is cool but i lost so many time ( money so ) because its not "proper".

Jared Polin Great work Fro. Welcome to the realm of Wildlife Photography, nice clicks of the Gorillas, the bird photographs could have been more expressive if shot in wild, but it's fine. I believe that the D500 is every wildlife photographer's dream as it almost offers all the features of D5, but the crop factor gives better telephoto range if fixed to an FX lens, so great choice there to select it for this review. B.T.W. I emailed you a question few weeks back please answer if possible and continue your great work. Peace and love from India, hope you visit soon

Looks like a really good lens, however, Tamron has the 100-400 f4.5-6.3 VC USD (type A035) out. I'm leaning towards the Tamron. I'm a bit Tamron biased since I allways had good luck with the Tamron lenses. And the price is very good aswell. I might need to rent them and see which one I want :-)

I know a lot of people will bring up filters, but one simple thing I've started doing is bringing glasses-wipes/extra microfiber cloths in my bag. I wear glasses, so I obviously want them with me anyways, but they're helpful in some situations shooting through windows that may have smudges on them.

Jared i am watching your videos from a long time now and i absolutely love your videos and your videos have helped me become a better photographer. I just wanted to give a quick suggestion.
I think you should make some videos about printing too !!
Like what are the minimum pixel requirements for a certain size of print, that is dpi, etc. etc. ( I know you already have made one video with the canon printer but i think that does not tell us about the basics of printing)
I think having knowledge about prints is also very important for a photographer.
I hope you read this comment and make a video on this topic.

Thanks for another great video Jared. I don't have this lens, but I do have the Tamron 18-400, and Nikkor 200-500. The Tamron is ideal for this sort of situation. As someone else says, a polarizing filter may have helped for shooting through glass. Yes it would cut the light a touch, but it didn't look as if light was a problem there.
I really don't think this is the place to discuss the pros and cons of zoos.

Short Q: Are results with this lens as satisfying as with the 18-35 1.8?
Longer version: I shoot mostly crop, and my long lens is the Canon 70-300 IS USM (older version, not the new all-black II). My favorite lens is the Sigma 18-35 1.8, so much that I leave it mounted instead of my 18-135. It focuses fast and produces such satisfying IQ with contrast and sharpness that if I even so much as try on a shot, I usually come away with the winner I want. On the other hand, no matter how hard I try with the 70-300, the ghosting, haloing, and general softness usually leave me underwhelmed, even when I nail focus and composition. It's the worst wide open, of course, but I find I need to stop down to f/10 to even approach satisfying output. The lens was a steal used, but it feels kind of worthless since I never want to mount it.
Is this a worthy replacement that I'll enjoy like the 18-35? That just lets me get the shot without trying to compensate for deficiency?

  • @jamma246

3:16 _"So it was a good thing that I had the cropped sensor camera there, because I think on the full frame, the 400 may not have been long enough to get the shots that I got."_
I don't really see how this makes sense. Wouldn't cropping the final image of the full-frame sensor be essentially equivalent? (or is it that the full frames have a lower density of pixels?)

This or the Sigma C 150-600? I usually shoot with m4/3 at zoo with 300(600mm).
I also have Nikon FX camera, 150 can be too long even on FF on this scenario and 400 to 600 is a lot of difference even on FX when shooting to small animals, at the moment we have 800€ vs 1000€ at most, what to do? :) The old 150-500 is bad in sharpness?

  • @nerdMike
    @nerdMike 5 років тому

What about new Nikon af-p 70-300 4.5-5.6E VR for FX? Reviews say it's sharper, and it coast almost the same, but it has stepper motor nearly silent, useful on videos and much precise on live view focus. Which to choose between this two? I have d610 and want to pair d7200 as crop body. Shooting wide open seems to be similar in performance, but 1/3 on Sigma is a problem?
I say this because sometimes it useless to have VR to reduce shutter time if subject move to fast, you need shorter time and higher iso. What do you think? Thanks
I think also I lose some af points because of minimum aperture over F5.6 with Sigma.

when you're shooting at 400 at f/6.3, does it actually stop the blades down or is it just saying it is at 6.3 to compensate the loss of light? same with a teleconverter.. shooting with an f/4 lens and using a 2x, does it really stop the lens down to f/8?

And this is why IBIS is now a HUGE boon to mirrorless photographers who use zoom lenses.

I rented the sony a9 and 100-400 to compare wth my 5d mark iv 100-400, I went to the st.augustine alligator zoo, between the smudged and dirty glass and shooting threw nets drove me nuts. I've been to other zoo's and they are all dirty and it sucks to take pictures. The zoo's are great, I love the animals but they really need to clean the glass. Great review.

31:47 Can someone please explain why Jared is saying you don't need OS during the day because you'd rather have a faster shutter speed? Thanks!

Would this be good for portrait work as well? I didn’t watch the whole video so I didn’t see if you stated that or not.
