Followed this and now having a successful dual boot ... Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Thanks I’ve been looking for this!
Thank you so, so much for this. I have a Dell XPS 9560 and was able to dual boot with Windows 10 without any issues so far. This video was _exactly_ what I needed.
Can you show how to install grub on the PopOS partition. It would be a lot easier with grub installed
I'll do an update on that ASAP.
I would suggest using rEFInd, it's much easier & customizable
New video coming up in 20 min. It is very simple. Pop OS does not use GRUB as bootloader, but systemd boot instead You just need to edit 1 line and you have dual booting.
The Tutorial is very well done. Just works. Thanks!
Glad it helped!
Everything worked it’s just weird how the boot manger in my bios doesn’t label the install as POP OS at all.
Just HDD1 it all works though :D
Any idea how to change that?
No idea, that really depends on the bios.
pop ships with systemd I can't find any info on how to add an entry for windows on that
According to the Arch Wiki, systemd-boot should detect Windows automatically, if it is installed on the efi partition.
Great guide, thank you for getting me started. I'll watch for your videos to learn more.
What if I have 2 partitions one is where windows is installed and the other remains empty? How to install on the empty one?
If it is two partitions it is the same scenario. If it is two disks, you will need to do the same by creating all partitions on the second disk.
But how to install, so that there is a choice when starting the computer as grub?
That's because Pop OS is using systemd boot. You can see in this video how to adjust that: ua-cam.com/video/Z2fwsgQcG-M/v-deo.html
Excellent tutorial and because that I am now subscribed.
Awesome, thank you!
hey, i have windows 10 and i want pop os for playing csgo but i still cant understand a single thing lol so its that i want that all my data in windows stays there without any effect and on pop os i can download steam again so how?
I have problem with windows boot the blue screen error plz help
I have a problem. When I press the check butting to allocate my first space where you did 65GB, it does the operation for about 10 seconds and then stops and I get 'An error occurred while applying the operation' and then it cancels out. I have tried multiple times and keep getting the same error that I cant make unallocated space. *Please help*. I really want to use Linux since I found my love for it from my laptops main OS but I can't do it on my SSD.
Try partitioning the disk in Windows instead.
@@eflinux Welp, I dove in head first and just erased my whole disk😅! I copied most of my stuff I wanted to keep onto a Portable HDD to make space to install PopOS! So I should be good. Thanks for the help anyway and great video also!
best and direct explanation
As a begginer I'm worried about the windows not booting anymore. Also, how to set up that GRUB thing we have on Ubuntu?
Thanks for the walkthrough ❤️ was able to confidently setup the os without any issues 👍.
Glad it helped!
Thank you Ermanno! I have a 600 MB EFI boot partition ( I created a larger one to install another Linux distro alongside Windows 10). If I select it as the EFI boot partition when installing PopOS, will it include the Windows 10 installation like with other Linux installs?
Hi Jesse! So, PopOS uses systemd-boot, so you’ll have to create the Windows entry for it. I did a video on Arch for that, but the process is the same.
@@eflinux Thank you Ermanno, I will check it out!
Is this tutorial made for a UEFI Bios system or a Legacy BIOS system?
It's UEFI.
First of all, Thank you so much for that clear explanation, but I have an error so please help me with that.
Once I click on "Modify Partitopns" in order to create the Pop-OS partitions, It keeps prompting " Libparted Warning. Not all of the space available to /dev/nvme0n1 appears to be used, you can fix the GPT to use all of the space (an extra 4544 blocks) or continue with the current settings?".
Then when I choose "Ignore", it keeps prompting many times. And then finally it says " An error occurred while applying the operations" !
I have HP Spectre x360 15t 2020!
It sounds like the efi partition is too small. If this is the case, I have another video on the channel where I go through several options.
@@eflinux
Can't I just extend the EFI system partition on Windows first?
Or, make separate partitions for Pop-OS without missing with windows partitions?
I'd go for the second efi partition. Changing the existing one can be messy.
Hey I installed as said and when I check the partitions and everything it says that pop os is installed but when I open the boot manager only the windows boot option is available. Any fix?
That might be because you need to change a setting in your motherboard. Some motherboards by default don't allow other boot manager other than Windows.
@@eflinux I have no idea how to do that. Do you have any videos on that?
Unfortunately not, as every motherboard is different.
very nice video! still looking forward into using GRUB for dual-booting, but besides that, very intiuitive! i do have a question.. how and what do you use for virtualizing a dual-boot system in a vm? i tried doing it in virtualbox and it doesn't work. what vm program do you use? i would love to replicate that exact same thing as well.
I'll do an update on that. Thanks for the feedback!
What if you have a Windows EFI boot that is 500mb? I have not been able to get grub to play well with Pop_Os! even though I have windows boot and Pop_Os! boot in the same EFI partition. Let me rephrase that, I cant get it to work with UEFI. Works good if both are installed using legacy though. Just out of habit a long time ago, I got use to creating windows partitions with DISKPART before installing windows. So EFI on my machines are 500mb or larger.
I'll do an update on that ASAP.
I’m getting error on windows 10 which is KMODE Exception Not Handle and i can’t install new windows because of usb doesn’t load right and still getting error. Well then i will just use the linux instead😌 Thankyou for explaining sir i can use pop os now and doesn’t want to think about windows again.
Hi, while I was doing this ( I followed another tutorial ) I did a step wrong and even though I managed to install pop os, I ended up deleting windows efi. Is there any way for me to recover windows without reinstalling it?
Difficult. I am not aware of any other solution then reinstalling Windows.
Not related to this video per se but to Arch itself. I cannot hear any audio in my headphone any arch installation/distro whatsoever. Whenever I plug in my headphones I hear no audio but yet it is recognized. I tried switching to LTS Kernel but to no avail it still persists. Is there any config I need to do or maybe guide me to some links where I can fix this? I've tried googling but it seems that not a lot people have this problem and if they do, it''s specific to their hardware.
Not even in Manjaro?
I'm not sure whether you have sound when using stereo speakers or no sound at all no matter what. So assuming you have no sound on your new Arch install, install "alsa-utils" and run "alsamixer" that should help you control your volume, I have no idea whether you are on a traditional desktop environment (they usually have these things by default) or on a tiling window manager (that's where I usually need this software because it's not there by default), in which case you also need to create a volume level notification on your panel.
@@eflinux no sir. Any arch distro I install I get no sound coming from my headphones. I've installed alsamixer and tried to fix it but no sound still even though it detects it. I used other software as well like PavuControls. It appears it's connected but no sound comes from it. I have no idea why. This wasn't happening before. Everything was perfect until this last time I started back again on Arch. On Ubuntu or Debian it's no problem
The only thing that comes to mind is if you installed alsa-utils to run afterwords alsa restore.
@@eflinux ill try and restore it but yes I did install alsautils and its dependencies too.
Hey, thanks for the awesome video! I thought that everything was super clear and very easy to understand! I liked it.
However, I do have a question: if my disk is already formatted in MBR, can I still install Pop!_OS without causing any trouble to the windows side? I'm asking because a) I think Pop!_OS likes to use GPT, and b) I have an old system and last time I tried this... well not everything went correct. So is there anything I should do to avoid trouble? Thanks in advance! :)
I haven't tried it out myself, so I can't really tell. The installer should detect the system correctly. What exactly went wrong during the last attempt?
@@eflinux Last time I tried this I think I just didn't do enough research and it wouldn't allow me to dual boot. Also, when I tried reinstalling windows, it wanted me to convert the disk to MBR, though I didn't know it changed at all. So, that's why I'm not sure if when I install Pop!_OS, Windows will let me boot into it.
I see. My suggestion is to look for a video for this, as I don't have one. I've seen 1 on YT for MBR with this scenario. In any case, make a backup of your data, if something goes wrong.
@@eflinux Alright, sounds good! I appreciate the advice greatly, and really enjoyed your video! :)
Let me know how it goes!
thank you so much!
You’re welcome!
I have one SATA SSD and one NVME with separate windows 10 instalations. This disk check is changing the NVME SSD when I start up SATA SSD windows so I cannot boot from NVME SSD after it. I tried two different NVME SSD’s so i am sure thay work correctly. Any suggestions please ?
I’m not sure I understood the problem.
@@eflinux Two ssd’s, one sata one m2 each with his own boot and windows 10. On loading windows from sata sdd it sees a problem on m2 ssd and fixes it. That "fix" breaks the m2 ssd, and makes it not bootable any more.
You'll probably need to repair the boot from a Windows ISO, not the Windows installation.
@@eflinux I do not want it repaired because it works perfectly. Stupid windows sees it as broken
You have 2 Windows installations on 2 disks?
Why does EVERYONE show you how to add Linux to windows... Instead of windows to Linux?
I did the first option and I lost everything, can you please help me :(
What happened?
Thanks great video❤❤
I didn't see the boot loader :D
THANK YOU!
You're welcome!
Hi, thanks for the tutorial. Unfortunately, when I create the boot partition fat32 efi, it gives me an error (that prevents me to press on 'erase and install') : "efi Partition is not on a GPT disk". Any idea on how to solve it would be highly appreciated!
You'll need to type "convert to gpt" first.
I found dual boot with Windows somewhat risky and unpredictable.
I am happy with Windows VM under KVM. It is much safer and keeps my Linux happy. :)
It can be sometimes.
I have installed windows and mac os catalina on the same laptop .. it’s not really risky when you edit your bios and use clover as a bootloader
You can download that from the Microsoft website.
Yes, of course. I did this only for demonstration purpose. If you want to have it permanent you need a key.
Hey thank u so much for the very detailed explanation... Can u pls make another video of how to successfully delete pop os if not needed.. because almost all tutorials cover only the installation part and there is literally no video that shows how to completely delete the pop os dual boot and move back to just windows alone.. pls make a video.. 🙏🙏🙏
Will add it to the list!
@@eflinux thank you so much...😍😍 Looking forward to your video 🤩🙏🙏🙏
you dont use grub, why?
PopOS uses systemd boot by default
It's not megabytes, it's mebibytes(MiB)
I know, just wanted to make it simple and not too long.
