I studied Cuban history in college, and it turned out that one of the Spanish professors was a Cuban lawyer who spoke to our class. He related how he grew up with the Castros and fought with them in the mountains. After the revolution succeeded, he said, he was made a judge by Fidel. But - it turned out - that he was expected to sentence "enemies" to death on Castro's orders. With tears in his eyes, he spoke about the betrayal of his ideals, and of leaving Cuba on one of the last possible flights.

It's an Argentine verbal tick, more common in Buenos Aires. I can allways spot Argentines in Europe, it's similar to 'like' for brainless valley girls, only it also serves as 'hello', 'ciao', and occasional expletive, as well as 'dude', 'wow', 'damn', et c .

That's absolutely right. He acquired it while he was in Mexico with Castro and the other Cuban revolutionaries he met there. 'Che' is very commonly used in Argentina. It's the equivalent of 'mate' in UK English or 'buddy' or 'dude' in US English. The Cubans were so amused by Guevara's frequent use of the word 'che' that it became his nickname.

I think it’s so important for us to look at the early lives and how people such as Ché grew up. It tells so much more about them than the later parts of their life when they actually did the things they’re famous for.
Like for example, Ché going through rigorous schooling for years in order to become a doctor to help people in his country. Knowing all that just adds a couple shades to everything else he did in life. It just kinda legitimizes him as someone who was genuinely trying to help his people. As opposed to many of the other leaders out there who just use the system to become an all powerful dictator with an endless supply of power and money.

Also, “Anglo-USA” ?! Have you seen the influence Irish and Italian Immigrants have had there? The Scots-Irish? You’re extremely ignorant of the legacy Britain had in America - the UK has had no colonial influence outside of Canada there since 1815 (war of 1812). The Founding Fathers deliberately went about creating a new historical culture for the USA, which is why Columbus is revered there and why Americans no longer play cricket. Post-1865 the US underwent rapid change that made it even more distinct.
You’re using your xenophobic hatred of Britain (due to events 300+ ago) to try and explain away why the US has such a poor reputation in Latin America…

Now I REALLY hope BioGraphics does a piece on Pol Pot, because obviously not enough people know the atrocities committed by him and the Khmer Rouge. And that's why I've been asking for it for so long. A ton of people died a horrifying, brutal death after having their lives stripped of meaning by their leader and not enough is ever said about it. How do you fail to do the minimal research necessary to even get the story behind his nickname wrong? Also, the double standard of feeling the need to present him as a murderer in the title when in comparison to other historical figures, many of them presidents or generals, who were involved in and even instigators of war themselves.

I grew up in Latin America, although one of my parents is from the USA: for fun and extra cash she taught English as a second language to adults where we lived, including to quite a few Argentinian students. I got to know them very well, along with their Argentinian accent, syntax, and slang. “Che” was not just a childhood nickname for Ernesto, it actively was and still is a very common filler word in Argentinian speech, like in some conversations it might even be every sixth or seventh word… in English, although it means “pal,” it’d be more like a combination of “dude,” “bro,” and “like,” something you’d call someone but also the word you’d invoke instead of “um.” Also, if you’re calling Guevara a murderer, if you ever post a biography of US President George Washington I expect you to call him a murderer too, for the great number of extrajudicial executions he ordered, both of his own troops for infractions such as stealing food or threatening to desert, and of random civilians he encountered for infractions such as openly sympathizing with the British or being rumored to spy for them. Frankly, you have to call everyone who was ever involved in any way with any war a murderer… which would be sort of an extreme pacifist position for you to take, but I would not object, so long as you applied that judgment evenhandedly and realistically across all the revolutionary and wartime figures you cover, and not just selectively to those who fought controversial battles.

If you found this interesting I would recommend reading Guevara’s Motorcycle Diaries, his account of his trip through South America as a young medical student with his friend Alberto on his motorcycle, La Poderosa II.
It was before Guevara was heavily involved in revolutionary activity (as in Cuba for which he is best known) but you notice perhaps some of the seeds are being planted when he checks out some mines and plants owned by American firms, and the state of the very poor and especially the indigenous populations of South America.
Che’s writing style is sometimes beautiful, and sometimes humorous. It’s one of my favorite books I’ve read recently (although I am a total sucker for Latin American culture so it adds up! lol) and I totally recommend it! (They also made a film out of the diaries but I haven’t seen it so idk if it’s any good)
I’m interested to hear if anyone else has read this book or plans to.
