Really glad you enjoyed it! Was a ton of work but the payout is completely worth it. My wife has claimed she will get this guy every time he's available :D
Thank you very much! Glad you've enjoyed the videos :) sorry I can't paint at much as I'd like and the editing process doubles the time investment so I might not always be able to keep up but I will certainly get to finishing them! The next one I want to do is the Oni of Souls :D
Hey man, nice work! On the citadel skills, I sprayed them all with a bone color while they were still on the sprue. You’ll have to touch it up after you cut it off, but it’s a nice head start! You could even give it a wash at that point
I hope to see you paint the Oni of Plagues next. I am nearly finished with that one and I must say I've had a very hard time with it. Great job on this one BTW.
Absolutely. The white was tough, and his swords and spear are in the way a bit. Plus the gold details on the arms and chest will be difficult I know. When I'm done with him, I think I will tackle the Komainu for a break in the detail.
That's the spirit! Good 'ol gold + Nuln Oil + done :D I'm holding off on him because I want to perhaps try NMM on him, but never attempted that before. About the only way I can think to make him interesting though.
Nice, this one was actually my first miniature I painted in my "painting career" and it was before I found your channel hehe :) Hats off for the skulls part, it made me wish I would do the detailed bases also at least for some monsters
Glad you liked it! So let me get this straight, you chose this to be your very first painted mini? WOW! This one is pretty intense, surprised it didn't scare you off! :D
Dude that skull base was a great idea! Dig it! Turned out looking nice! Always a bit frustrating to battle colors not working quite like you want, but I think you did a good job saving this guy. Looking forward to painting mine!
Glad you liked it! This guy definitely needed more skulls :D Also yes, color matching can be a very hard part at times but in the end I am just thankful i thin all my paints so it wasn't ruined. I look forward to seeing yours!
For sure! I spend quite a lot of time coming up with the paint list (I use exactly what is in the description when painting) but's it's actually pretty fun, especially when I come across a new color such as this. Now when there is no concept art, that's when I get to go wild :D
I just finished Oni of Spite as second ROS figure as you recommended and about to ask you If you were planning to paint Oni of Skulls soon. The reason for that is that I want to focus on the monsters of the base set first and when looking on the internet for pictures of Oni Of Skulls I got disapointed. None of the painted figures seemed to have a nice skin color, seems hard to find a nice bleu apparently. So when opening UA-cam I saw you posted a new video with the miniature I was hoping for, with a very cool bleu skin🙂 Awesome video, I Will also copy The Skulls idea on the base
Glad that worked out! I will be trying to do a bit of a mix between monsters and tribes, you can see my tentative schedule below in response to Nick Taylor :) Again, you can match my skin or skip a bit (thought it'll come out slightly different) by using Sotek Green that I linked in the description as the base coat. I agree, everyone seems to just paint him straight blue, which is historically accurate but doesn't match his unique shade from the art of the game.
Ugh, I love him. I've never been much of a highlighter, but I've been painting the Oni of souls recently and I feel I HAVE to, with his size and how much of him is just green... I really liked the addition of the skulls for this Oni, are you going to add little personal touches to all the Oni? What would you use on the base of the Oni of souls?
I always try to up my basing game! I'm not a very good highlighter but sometimes as you said it's just necessary. For the Oni of Souls my current plan is to actually make his base "pretty" as I find it'll be a good contrast kind of like the Fire Dragon's "ruined beauty" - Grass and dirt with these wonderful meadow flowers Army Painter sells but I'll drip blood on them from the bodies: amzn.to/2DlNGC2
I will echo everyone that this is absolutely amazing. When you say it took you 3 days + 1 day to edit, how many hours in those 3 days were you painting? Like 8 - 10 hours I imagine? Great work!
Thanks a ton Josh! This is definitely one of the ones I'm most proud of :) It would have been quicker had I not struggled to get that skin *just* right. I believe this was about 8-12 hours of work total. I'm by no means the fastest painter, but I don't tend to spend an exhortation amount of time on them either so ideally anything I do is within the realm of you guys time commitment wise.
so I jumped to the basing here. love the skull idea for this. Letting it play more gets to highlighting @45:22 and this is where I'm confused. you mention you're using white but the color is clearly not white. what color is that? It looks like a lighter red but I'm not sure the color or technique your going with here, the later is probably due to my lack of knowledge and practice.
Really glad you liked the video :D So this was me adding white to the Vallejo Dark Red. You could lighting it with a brighter white, a yellow, off white etc. so I specify what color I used to highlight (usually just some white added to the normal color). :)
Good question. Best way that I've done is glue them in the base first and then prime. You can also glue or putty then to a stick and then prime on that.
I hope she had an easier time of it than I did! :D Intention and goals are always just that but yes, I hope to keep Rising Sun as my main focus on the channel for some time to come :) There are a LOT of unique sculpts though! The monsters will be finished before the tribes I can tell you that much at least. Would a schedule help you guys out? I have to paint and then create the video which takes a ton of time so I'll always be a bit slower than you might like, but if I post a tentative schedule you might get the most benefit out of it :) Not sure where that should even live. Perhaps my Patreon description or FB. For now, here's what I have coming up: Walther Cavendish (Rise of Moloch), Turtle Bushi (Rising Sun), Ira Kodich (RoM), Dragonfly Daimyo (Patreon vote winner), Damon Smith (RoM), Oni of Blood (RS), Emma Swanson (RoM), Turtle Shinto (RS). Mind you that is tentative, I will be getting some Batman: GCC miniatures in the mail here soon that will intersect at some point in the list.
Hi KoA, I have a question. I have testor's dull coat for matt varnish. After I spray it everything goes dull as intended. However, if I have a miniature like this one that has a few areas of gold that I want to make shiny, can I just apply the gloss to make it shiny or do I have to go over it again with base and highlights before painting it with gloss for protection?
Great question! No need to change anything, just brush on the gloss coat where you want it to be shiny again :) Btw all highlights are still there, the matte coatcan just make them seem less so to our eyes.
Thanks! Glad you like it :) I have played the game and it is FANTASTIC! Seriously the game had us shouting and having a blast and the strategic choices are huge. I've yet to see a game lost where the player didn't say "that play didn't turn out well" or "if only I had played that mandate" which is great. Our first game ended in me shouting and my wife laughing miniacly in the last battle which for me was a good sign of fun value :) Still planning a review but want some more sessions on it still.
Totally worth it unlike MD IMO, which didn't offer enough RMs in it's core box. The KS monsters here are nice but completely unnecessary. In fact, I've only painted one of them so far.
Love your work, learned so much. I've been painting my RS figures with the help on these videos and only Oni of Spite is left. Are you going to do painting videos of all RS monsters?
Glad you have enjoyed my videos! Painting all of the monsters is the goal anyway :) Rising Sun will remain the main feature of the channel for some time. Next RS video will be up on Monday :)
Great! Can I ask you which colors did you use for skin? I read "Skin: Grey Blue (V) / Emerald (V) 9/1, Nuln Oil (C), Light Green Blue (V) highlights". In the video you start with a light blue and at 5.15 you use another kind of blue (or green?)... I don't understand...
Yeah sorry about that. Getting a color I was happy with was a journey and I didn't want to edit out the fact that it started out wrong. What you read there is what I ended up using in the end, so it will represent my final results. The 9/1 mix is eyeballed, just add a bit of green to the mix until you are happy with the base color, but it's a strong green so you won't need much!
I just finished my Oni of Skulls, my 4th monster, following your guidance. I Will post him later on on Instagram. Where can I find your planning of The monsters you Will do again?
Awesome! I bet he turned out great :D I don't regularly post the schedule because it is constantly changing so feel free to ask whenever you are curious :) My next Rising Sun video will be in a few days and it'll be the one my Patron's voted for: the Dragonfly Daimyo. After that I'll paint the Turtle Bushi (one holding the head) and the Oni of Souls. I have a realy fun base idea for the Oni of Souls I think :D
WOW! Brilliant work.
Thank you, I'm really glad you liked the video :)
You nailed it. Really appreciate the amount of love poured into making this look so much like the artwork. F---ing brilliant!
Really glad you enjoyed it! Was a ton of work but the payout is completely worth it. My wife has claimed she will get this guy every time he's available :D
Fantastic job done mate.
Thank you very much! This is actually my favorite paint job I've ever done :D
Thank you for putting the (c) and (v) behind your colors in the overview!👍
No problem! ;)
As a gerneal rule, if it has a normal name it's Vallejo and if it's a silly name they can trademark then it's Citadel :D
The King of Average 😂
Thank you so much for editing and posting
Wish there was one of these for all the base Oni! I love all your videos as I go through my Oni
Thank you very much! Glad you've enjoyed the videos :) sorry I can't paint at much as I'd like and the editing process doubles the time investment so I might not always be able to keep up but I will certainly get to finishing them!
The next one I want to do is the Oni of Souls :D
I love the fact that a model can have pink flowers on it's clothing and still look terrifying!
Hah! Right? :D Not every day you see pink flowers hanging off of a lazy eyed Oni walking through a field of skulls.
Really awesome video! I love that you do all these Rising Sun videos. Great production value and the choice of music is spot on imo.
Thank you so much! I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed the video and appreciate the feedback :)
great video
way to go
Glad you liked it! :)
Another great video buddy!
Thanks man I'm always glad to hear you enjoyed the video! Thanks for checking in :)
some nice work man, well done , love the skin tone
Thanks I'm so glad to hear that! It took forever to do as you saw but that's partly my own fault :P
Hey man, nice work! On the citadel skills, I sprayed them all with a bone color while they were still on the sprue. You’ll have to touch it up after you cut it off, but it’s a nice head start! You could even give it a wash at that point
ooooh that'd be way faster! Will try that next time :D
I hope to see you paint the Oni of Plagues next. I am nearly finished with that one and I must say I've had a very hard time with it. Great job on this one BTW.
Thank you and I certainly will get to him! Was the issue all the white? That's why he wasn't the first (or second) Oni :P
Absolutely. The white was tough, and his swords and spear are in the way a bit. Plus the gold details on the arms and chest will be difficult I know. When I'm done with him, I think I will tackle the Komainu for a break in the detail.

LOL too true :D

The King of Average Citadel calls Sotek Green a layer paint, can you easilly use it as base paint also?
Sure can! I base with layer paints all the time! Only difference between the two is translucency and sometimes thickness of the paint :)
Great channel! Subbed. God bless.
Welcome Zeroa6! Happy to have you here :)

@@TheKingofAverage cool. That is for the info.
@@drgnmstr44 Sure thing! :)
great job! What's a good way to prime those skulls (or did you?)? I have that same citadel set of them.
Good question. Best way that I've done is glue them in the base first and then prime. You can also glue or putty then to a stick and then prime on that.
My lady just painted this and would have LOVED your video to follow along. Are you intending to post videos of all the monsters?

Looks fantastic! Have you played the game yet? Just wondering how it measures up to games like Massive Darkness, Black Plague, etc.
Thanks! Glad you like it :)

The King of Average Right on! I might have to get a retail copy some day then!

Can you tell us which one it will be? I'm trying to learn how to paint watching your videos. Finishing Oni of Spite this week
Surre thing! It's my Parteon voted Dragonfly Daimyo.
My SOP is to put down a dark undercoat on metallic areas so it shows up better. Why didn't you do that for this guy?
You mean like for the armor trim? I imagine that's a great idea - which is probably why I didn't think about it ;)

Sounds great, I wonder how you will take up Yurei also
That's on the short list for sure! I love the design of that one!
I think you mentioned somewhere there is a way of buying finished miniatures, where can I find all finished miniatures?
Hmm, trying to understand. What do you mean by "finished" miniatures?
