When Kirby kills him in the first meeting at the house, time shifts. But it shifts back to 1920 and he's alive - no scar. Klara knows everything (says what he says); Britta is alive; Leo alive. The watch is placed on the bed with a polaroid photo (not yet invented) - this is Kirby (who had been stalking him is what I imagined, watching what he does and when he does it) luring him back to the house. She realized taking away his power wouldn't work unless she brought him back to the very beginning, the very day he first entered the house.
So in the second meeting he and Leo are back to the first day they discovered the house but this time, Kirby is already there and she controls the house now instead of Britta's husband. He does not know Kirby, just as he did not know Britta's husband. Now that he has no power she can let him go back to 1920 instead of killing him again. He will now age and be of no threat to her. And, besides, she will be following him now, just to be sure.

@@themiddleman781 I wish Kirby shifting his reality would have "shown" more, not necessarily told to us. For example, when Leo tells him he never saw combat, Harper is insistent and Leo is seen looking at him like he's crazy. It would have been poetic justice to end with Harper being in the sanitarium instead of Leo. This was a big missed opportunity by the writers IMO.

@@Rad200G2B Yeah I agree. I did notice how his reaction changed after he realized Leo was looking at him like he was nuts. Maybe he had the memory of Leo in the future and he knew he'd better be very careful or he'd end up in the hospital ("I don't want to end up like Leo" - something he said I think during his fight with Kirby in laundromat/bar). I still would have liked to have seen a flash forward to 1921 say, with "him" as the patient in Leo's room. That would have been great and wld have really sealed the deal for me because right now, I'm actually still just "guessing" with all of these theories I've posted. It wld have also given additional meaning to that throw away line. Guessing at a series ending is one thing. But, with this show I have been guessing the entire time, and that's where it loses a bit for me.

It seemed to me that the house chooses who gets the power by "speaking" to them. In Ep 6, theres a rumbling in the house that only Harper hears when they first enter it. It's the same rumbling sound that Britta's husband in Ep 8 heard in the woods in 1848 and which drew him to walk toward the house and discover it. The house rumbles for Kirby too in Ep 9. It never rumbles for Leo or Klara. I didn't take the watch on the bed as the doing of the house. Instead I presumed this was Kirby's doing.

@@themiddleman781 And, the limit to how far into the future one can travel was not really explained. Not sure if it's significant, but if not, why include it? The only thing I did notice was in either Ep 7 or 8 when Kirby awakes from sleeping in the archives, her research request ticket shows the year 1992, making the present day at least in Ep 7 and 8, 1992. (I literally jotted notes as I was watching these episodes because they were so convoluted).
1848-1920 is 72 years. This might explain why the house can't go past 72 years into the future when Harper takes it in 1920. 1992 - 1920, is a span of 72 years. Harper can't go past 1992. But what the significance of this is I don't know. I'm sure there are so many more clues I missed in this show. I haven't even rewatched 1-5 and I bet they are filled with them. EDIT: Just realized maybe the significance is that it has to stop at 1992 so that Kirby can remedy it. If he were able to pass her in the future, he could prevent her from stopping him.

The finale of this show felt so disjointed that I rewatched Ep 6-8 to see if there were things I missed that might make the finale wrap make better sense. Your theory that the house was always Kirby's is a really interesting one and one that fits with her behavior at the end. I came away from a rewatch with different theories but yours may be better. I don’t understand how Kirby came to own the house. Kirby shot harper which scared him off from the house. That means that Harper never got to go up stairs and chase the old man out of the cupboard and into the street where he got run down and killed. The old man hiding in the cupboard upstairs is still alive so he is still the owner of the house. 😮😮😮

I was disappointed in the finale. It felt anti climatic given all the build up and intensity going into it. Didn’t do the series justice and felt rushed. I don’t agree that the house sent Dan off to serial murder to get Kirby back. Not even sure it was Kirby’s all along…she clearly went in and out many times and years to stalk Dan to save the shining girls … and that explains the dog. The Pegasus was part of a set in the house and it simply showed Kirby where Harper got it from. And how did Dan know about the pic/address of the house and where/how to pull it out of Harper’s pocket while dying…that’s just bad fast writing to get Kirby to the house. The house and how it operates will remain a mystery unless there is a second season. But I doubt there will be. Ugh, well, too bad, I really loved the series and the finale let me down.

Foreshadowing on porch with Dan when he tells Kirby his brain shuts off and he forgets everything. Kirby asks If he will forget that she was there (on the porch) is something I didn't catch significance of on the 1st viewing. In the finale Dan doesn't remember, but she seems familiar. Sorry but I think you're grasping at straws here. There's nothing to really suggest it was Kirby's house all along. The dog is there because their time traveling paths happen to overlap after Kirby has taken it over. And yes the house chose her to transfer power to, but there's nothing to suggest she had it before Harper or that the house was trying to get back to her - just that it viewed her as a worthy guardian to take over from Harper. Also, she doesn't have any powers on her own - she and Jin are caught in the time shifts because their threads got entangled with Harper's when they survived his murder attempt.
Furthermore, the book doesn't back up anything that you're saying here. This video is literally just you making stuff up.
