This video saved me much pain and stress. Take your time and it works, compressing the shock enough to remove from the hub carrier with help of the spreader tool. Then reversal of the above to install new shocker Felt I had to comment to thank you for posting....kudos to you!
Glad I could help! Nowadays with power tools I just pop the axle bolt out and the tie rod/ball joint and just take the whole strut and knuckle off together and don't separate them for spring installs. Bit quicker not being stuck with hand tools. This is a great option though
@@BryceJordanProductions is it better for the top of the wood to not be hitting the top of the strut and just hang from the bolt only? I am trying to get mine out now and that’s the only idea I can think of is the strut can’t move with the knuckle because of the force pushing on the top? I thought my strut wasn’t spread enough because I’m not using the actual tool, just a 1/4” socket adapter, but it seems to be free from the clamp. Thanks man.
Thanks 👍 Saved me a whole load of time and avoided a bunch of potential problems too. Sub’d already and appreciate the time you’ve taken to put up all the great content! Cheers 👍
Good video, thanks for sharing. I only discovered this method earlier this week. I'll try this on my A3 next. If I had to I would not have removed my front axles when doing my GLI lowering springs.
Dcc makes no difference on spring removal. You'll just have some electrical connectors on the struts. You'll need DCC deletes if you're going to coilovers, avoid KW, iSweep is what you want for deletes.
You’re the man. I got vwr’s coming and I was wondering if I can handle the job in the driveway. Your video looks pretty straight forward so I’ll try. Thanks brother 🔥
the nut of the hub or the screws of the joint homocinet, why didnt you remove? I have seen a lot of videos for remove the struts, all of them remove nut of hub or screws of the joint........
Hey man, I just saw this and got a new GTI 2020. Got H&R lowering springs to put on and will follow your 2x4 method. Looks like a time and headache saver. Couple of questions, what size strut spreader socket is that? I've heard there are different ones. And they suggest to replace the bearings cause it's the "weak link" but mine being so new with just over 10k miles should I just swap springs? Any nuts or bolts come across pain that need to be changed. I started once and got one seized and the head was stripping so I put it off till I get some replacement nuts and bolts.
Homestly it’s easier if you have a good impact to just removed the strut with the knuckle. Just a few extra steps can save you a lot of time. But only if you have the right tools to do so. Axle nut and brake caliper are very tight and are one time use hardware
How did you use the pinch bolt to attach the wood because that’s way longer once you ran screw thru strut and thru wood . It also look like it bent the screw when jacking it was that from the wood breaking . Hopefully it works the same way for me cause I don’t want to remove axle and that’s the only thing holding my strut in now
It didn't bend it, and it is long. Could save yourself the hassle and get a few bolts from the store to sacrifice I suppose just in case! But make sure you have a spreader tool or a makeshift one at least. Getting that strut out of there is just such a pita
Bryce Jordan Productions ok thanks man and last thing what size bit was the pinch bolt I can’t find the exact size star bit and almost stripped it . Using random things to try to get it off
@@tevionsaunders2506 shit man im not sure off hand! I'm deployed right now, if I were home I'd look for ya! Try looking at shop daps suspension DIY, I think he goes over the tools needed cause they sell them
Absolutely it was a total pain in the ass. Make sure you get a strut spreader tool, PB blaster will be your best friend as well lube up that strut real nice
Bryce Jordan Productions I have everything installed but the passenger side front that strut will not come loose tried the 2x4 method and everything it just won’t budge
@@thomasaragon8775 it's a pain man. Do you have an extra set of hands? Helps to mallet and shake the assembly. Spray some wd40 or something around the strut too, are you a spreader tool?
Thanks so much man. I really don’t understand what’s wrong with Volkswagen. Why do their cars have so much wheel gap. All the mom machines nowadays have almost no wheel gap, corollas, civics, accords, camrys. All have less gap. While VW over here put like a foot of gap on their hot hatch (although it’s the 1.8 base, but still) So now we have to go through this shit to make look better. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ fail VW.

@@BryceJordanProductions Makes total sense. Thank you again
This is going to be so much better than undoing the axles. Thanks you. Already did it once. And I’ve been dreading doing it.
Yeah I'm not a fan of the axle pulling lol
How have I not seen this method or video yet?!? What a time saver! Thanks, Bryce!
Glad I could help!
I see this method posted a lot but nice to have a visual for it, thanks for the video. Enjoy all your content.
You're very welcome! Definitely comes in handy if you don't have a lift! Or want to take a bunch of other things off

Exactly what I was looking for. Cheers from Ireland 🇮🇪
Hope it helps!
Thanks a ton. I'm putting H&R springs on my GTI next weekend and this looks so much easier than the ways I've seen it.
It's way easier this way! Make sure you have a good strut spreader tool it really helps

What a great tip! Thanks. I'm sure this will work with my Octavia VRS, as its the same setup.
This will work on tons of different cars I'm sure!
Great video of this method. I used the same when I did my front struts.
I wish I would have done it this way the first time lol it's so much easier
Hey fellas is the respring process the same on Dcc as it is for non dcc cars? The rears as easy as just following standard procedure

Same game for installing the replacement strut? Mount the top, insert the bolt through the 2 x 4 d jack it up?
For stock strut you could yes. Aftermarket you won't need to as they're much shorter

Quick question, how do u disable the dcc after replace to coilover? Appreciated if you can share tips using obd eleven to manually disable.
You can't. Gotta get DCC cancellers. Isweep and kw make them

Hey Bryce, keep me posted if the kit makes clunking noise on not so soft pavement. I’m tired of my st suspension kit
No clunk!! I went to my normal clunk spots and it's gone! Not sure if it's cause the coils themselves or the end links.. but it's gone!
Bryce Jordan Productions thank you
Very cool trick.
Bro how do you keep the wood from slide out
Drill a hole and use the bolt for the endlink
@@BryceJordanProductions I did lmao it would still slide out anytime it got enough weight on it. I got if figured out but that shit was brutal
Maybe try some zipties around the wood and strut? but not tight as that will bind the wood against the hub, but just enough to keep it vertical
