The Lakes have been our holiday place twice a year for the last 19 years so I know how brutal that terrain is (also we're currently in the Lakes so just doing simple walks is hard!). I said it on FB but HUGE kudos for getting done what you did. Honestly all of that route, whilst beautiful, is absolutely brutal! Scafell Pike should never be underestimated, even if it's terrain you're super used to, it's still tough and takes mental and physical strength. I think you (and Smiddy) did a fabulous job. 👌🏻👌🏻
Thanks Nic! I love the lakes but probably underestimated how much of a challenge it would still be! In my head I thought, ‘I know this place pretty well by now!’ but the route was another level compared to what I’m used to! By Scafell I was spent.
@@AlPepperRuns every year we travel up and every year we go "oh yeah we can do these hills (whatever "they" might have been planned) and every year we go "ooooffff" at the first hill we encounter! Honestly, I said to hubby that we would have been timed out WAY before you were, my hill legs are just non-existent, I need to work on that. But yeah, brutal event and you did super super well. Can't wait to watch The Wall vid... 👌🏻
Great effort Al and smid it looked brutal and its hard when you dont train regularly in that area but acracking effort and another great vidi well done .
Ah mate, really felt for you watching this, you looked broken and even the banter was starting to dry up and you were just pointing at the nice views towards the end 😂 Honestly tho- massive kudos for getting that far and then back too, it looked a real beast so nothing to be ashamed of!
Wow, well done Al. Absolutely brilliant video mate. Gutted for you not making the cut off but massive well done getting round the course. No mean feat 💪👊🏻
Well done to both of you for attempting it, Awesome now far you both got. Thanks for all the wonderful photography and info, it can't have been easy filming it as well. Keep up the brilliant and fabulous videos !
Wow! What a video Al! Huge well done, you might not have got a finish time but you finished the event 💪🏃 Fantastic, looking forward to the next video 😊
Brilliant episode, the views were spectacular and seeing you both battle against injuries and the clock was humbling, hold yer head up marra you’ll crack it next time 👍
Incredible effort to get that far, Al! I've walked all the fells over the years and that route is pure evil. I would have stopped at Pavey Ark I reckon!
That was good, a guy in our club did it so it was nice to see the route. Do you want electrolytes? No. Then you get more cramp 😆 Ready salted crisps in the pack from now on Al.
Haha, I’d had nothing but electrolytes! Needed a change! But yeah, I’ve heard that over long durations, you need ‘proper’ food like crisps, pork pies etc!
That was insane - that’s not a race it is a full on hike! I felt your pain of being DNFd although undoubtedly it was nowhere near the pain you experienced! Great effort!
Well done bud, saw a few heads on the day early doors as we hit high raise saw one lad setting up to take photos on bow fell, and we passed the leader as we descented off Esk pike...eat and drink more the next time youve got a good day in the mountains. Well done for sticking at it
@AlPepperRuns eating is key Al, every 30 mins.... get descent training in those blows, quads. That and salt tabs bud. All a massive learning curve being in the mountains. What a stunning day for it though..
You know your knackered when you start hearing sheep cough's. Sad time Al but well done for getting as far as you did. You cant win em all but you'll remember them.
Looks a brilliant route, but pretty tough. I know a lot of those climbs from doing the Wainwrights, and honestly, the full course may only be 1km longer, but you have Esk Pike and Bowfell to get over!😖 Great video thanks, and maybe one for next year… maybe 😀
Real admiration for you on this one. That wasn't 40k of running, it was 40k of full-on scrambling. I love how the word technical is used as shorthand for "nine thousand places to break an ankle". Hope the next one is a little easier than this.
Haha, thanks Jan. Yeah, technical is a rather pleasant but perhaps somewhat misleading term for it. We spent half the day scrambling across boulder fields!
Gutted for you Al, but a great effort, well done for keeping on going and digging in. Hoping to see you smash the wall next week and get a fist pump from you
Great video, huge effort. We did the walk from Seathwaite to Great Gable in thick fog, the other week so nice to see what we could have seen, my wife really struggled with the height. Always looked at these races and assumed they were only for the pros, i think you have shown that they aren't? But not sure haha. Well done!
Haha, I’m not sure either! They’re definitely elite events but I reckon non-elites could just about get round in time if you could keep the pace up. It’s experience over super technical terrain that you need!
DNF is the biggest worry, but you were a warrior. I am doing the Ultra North 25k this year...hopefully...this is the third attempt... 2 years ago husband fell off his bike before and had a knee injury... Last year I had a sickness bug the night before, ended up with concussion...fingers crossed make it to the start line this year....
Geez, third time lucky hopefully! You’ll have a great time with the Ultra North! Don’t even think about a DNF, just get out there and have a brilliant day! Enjoy every footstep!
Got my first ultra marathon on Saturday, I was tieing myself up trying to work out pace and time and wasn't looking forward to the event. having watched loads of your videos you have reminded me why I started running in the first place. the journey and the adventure and the mental health benefits don't know when it became all about finish times. you have given me back my passion and love for running and set me free of the finish times thank you so much for just being amazing & positive. now I truly can't wait for Saturday and the adventure that lays ahead. thank you so so much ❤.
Thank you Adam! Honestly, I’m not sure what to say! What a lovely message to receive and I’m over the moon that you’re looking forward to your ultra! Which one is it?! Thanks again!
I would highly recommend some salt tablets, they do lemon and lime ones in Holland and Barretts. They saved me at the Giants Head marathon last year when it was really hot

The best film yet, mate, not in a mean way but in a way that showed you having every emotion possible to humans. Having DNf’ed twice myself in Ultras, it’s hard to take initially. Just remember, “fail” stands for “First Attempt In Learning”. You’ll come back stronger; you’ll come back more determined; and you’ll come back with just as much enthusiasm as always inspiring us all to go out there and get it. Which reminds me, if you have cramp and someone says, “Do you want some electrolytes?”, the answer is always a resounding “Yes”! Keep up the great work, pal. 💪🏼
Really appreciate the wise words mate. FAIL is a great acronym, I’ll remember that going forward! I’d had so many electrolytes etc. by that point that I just wanted some water for a change!
