Real Reason Why They Never Used Eagles to Take the Ring Into Mordor

  • The question lingers, a shadow across the triumph of Gondor: why not eagles? With their dominion of the skies, wouldn't these majestic creatures be the perfect solution to bypassing Mordor's perilous lands and delivering the One Ring straight to Mount Doom? While the eagles undeniably played a crucial role in the War of the Ring, entrusting them with the Ring's destruction held dangers far exceeding the perilous trek of the Fellowship.
Firstly, secrecy was paramount. Sauron's all-seeing eye, perched atop Barad-dûr, dominated the skies. A colossal eagle soaring towards Mordor would be a beacon, drawing the Dark Lord's gaze and inviting swift retribution. Hobbits, small and inconspicuous, offered a far stealthier option. Gandalf himself alluded to this in The Fellowship of the Ring, acknowledging the eagles' vulnerability to Sauron's watchful eye.
Secondly, eagles were not immune to the Ring's insidious influence. The Ring preyed on the powerful, promising dominion and bending even the most noble wills. Gandalf, wise and powerful, refused to bear the Ring for fear of succumbing. Eagles, majestic and proud, were likely even more susceptible. Imagine a Great Eagle, corrupted by the Ring's whispers of ultimate power, turning against Middle-earth and delivering the Ring to Sauron, not the fires of Mount Doom.
Thirdly, consider the sheer might of Mordor. Sauron's armies were vast, and his Nazgûl, mounted on fell beasts, patrolled the skies. Even the mightiest eagles would face a fierce aerial battle, jeopardizing both the Ring and the eagles themselves. In The Two Towers, we witness the eagles struggling against the Nazgûl at Weathertop, showcasing their vulnerability when facing these dark creatures.
Fourthly, the eagles were not simply aerial taxis. They were intelligent beings with their own concerns and priorities. Gwaihir, the Windlord, aided Gandalf when summoned, but the eagles were not blindly subservient. They wouldn't readily commit to a potentially suicidal mission, especially one with such high stakes for all of Middle-earth.
Finally, delivering the Ring wasn't simply about reaching Mount Doom. Someone had to enter the very heart of Sauron's domain and physically cast the Ring into the Crack of Doom. The eagles, magnificent as they were, couldn't navigate the treacherous slopes or withstand the searing heat. This task, fraught with danger and demanding immense willpower, fell perfectly to a hobbit, a race known for their resilience and surprising fortitude.
The Fellowship's journey, though fraught with peril, was more than just a physical expedition. It was a test of courage, fellowship, and the will to resist the Ring's corrupting influence. Hobbits, with their simple, unassuming nature, proved to be the most unlikely heroes, highlighting the power of perseverance and the importance of defying expectations. While the eagles played a vital role in rescuing Frodo and Sam from Mount Doom, the burden of destroying the Ring ultimately rested on the shoulders of a hobbit, a testament to the unexpected heroes who can rise in the face of overwhelming darkness.

It’s always kind of bugged me that Sam didn’t do anything to stop Frodo from just leaving like that. He had already accepted that he was going to die up there, and he was just going to let Frodo ruin everything?? Idk, maybe I’m missing something here.

I was there, sunny boy, when the strength of the Hobbit failed. Had it not been for Gollum's greed the ring would not have been destroyed.
Also, only non-men can defeat the Nazgul. i.e. eagles
