Death Ride 2021 | EMERGENCY EVACUATION from Tamarack fire.

- My original plan was to document the 2021 Death Ride. However, plans quickly changed as the Tamarack fire was just 4 miles from the parking lot. Organizers and emergency personnel had to cancel the event and order an emergency evacuation. What started as small fire quickly raged into a 6000+ acre fire overnight.

Absolutely Joesph! I don’t think people realise that the fire can kill you before it reaches you. A fire that large you’re not safe in any location that the fire is headed for. Especially with pine trees.
I would be out of there allready, you do not want to be there when everyone realizes the danger they are in.

@@xtc996 it’s not a race with awards and podium at the finish. If you finish within the allotted cut off time, you can then purchase a jersey. Many wanna be “racers” act like it’s a race, but those of us who actually race know it’s just a ride that you can pay to do.
It's NOT a race. They run a cycling tour through several mountain pass climbs each year. Coolest thing is that the passes are closed to motor vehicle traffic for the event.
The person in charge of the DEW weapon needs to be held financially responsible and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Enough is enough.

What is the saddest thing here? Getting a spot for the Death Ride is a real bitch. Sign up dates are tough to catch, as it's a race to get your entry. Thus is the actual racing part of the event. Waiting lists.
Cycling 22000km per year a while back, I tried for a spot three times. No joy.
It would have been fun.
So, with this in mind...i understand the tragedy of having to close the event.
By the way, that parking lot was not a good "defensible space". Former brush monkey here, helitack. Sorry to hear of another cancellation, man.

It would probably take me 2 hours to get over there but this fire is so huge and bad most of the sky is covered in a smoke cloud where i am right now

It’s NOT a race! It’s a ride that you pay to participate in. There are no UCI points awarded. There’s no podium, no trophies. It’s a really hard ride, but it’s not a race.
Lived close by for 40yrs...love riders are generally arrogant California elitist bike snobs ...fancy themselves above ordinary mortal folk...glad to see them go.
Thankful, those Mountain Bike Folks are a rowdy bunch with their Clif Bars and Voss Water.
