    This book was SO GOOD that the problematic bits were a non-issue for me. (And I know that's not going to be the case for everyone.)
    And speaking of Jay Kristoff, Aurora Rising comes out in May and I'm dyyying! 😊😁

    I started Nevernight a couple of months ago & got to the 🐴 & 🐙 when I got some Dune vibes. Had put off reading Dune & then finally picked it up to nibble. I’m still early in the 1st book [Duke Leto is still alive & Marshaling his forces]. It’s true what you say about the Nevernight chronicle starts in familiar formulas. Formulas work well enough for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The decisions made for this world are bonkers & great. As I thought about it, the parallels between Nevernight & Dune convinced me Dune is just as much a fantasy as sci-fi. 🐛= 🐉.

    Hush is a male and he was disfigured as well...

    • @ThoughtsOnTomes
      @ThoughtsOnTomes  5 років тому +1

      Ally Vegan he was described as beautiful though, not grotesque like the women. We don’t even find out about his situation until later, it’s only said once, and then his beauty is still emphasized. The women are discussed as grotesque almost whenever they are on the page. It’s not the same.

    • @allyvollheim3575

      @@ThoughtsOnTomes and personally I would rather look grotesque than have what happened to Hush happen to me, beautiful or not. In a lot of books it is usually the opposite, the men are the war hardened, scared, grotesque and beaten warriors and the women are the beautiful damsels. In that case people complain about the women being too beautiful and not being treated as equal to men. In this series it is usually the women who are the most BA instead of having a male main character. Maybe Jay just knew women could take it as much as men. Idk I just feel like people are never happy in this situation. Either they are upset that the women are beautiful and useless but do not care the men are grotesque (no one complains about the Hound in game of Thrones for example) or they are upset when bad ass women actually get injured in ways it would not matter if male characters were. :) would you have had the same issue with the book if a bunch of males were grotesque and the women were the beautiful ones? I can not believe you actually responded by the way! Hello! :D I love your videos! Keep up the good work!

    • @ThoughtsOnTomes
      @ThoughtsOnTomes  5 років тому

      Ally Vegan I think you are misunderstanding my comment. I don’t care that women are grotesque. I care that it’s just them and that it’s also used as the main descriptor for them. It’s focused on highly. Their looks have nothing to do with their badassness. I still have this book 5 stars 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s not a matter of being unhappy with it or finding something to complain about. It’s something I noticed. I believe I explained all of my thoughts about this book and characters in a well rounded way. It’s fine if you disagree 😊

    • @allyvollheim3575
      @allyvollheim3575 5 років тому +1

      @@ThoughtsOnTomes Ahhhhhh that clears up my misunderstanding! :D I guess I just got confused with the "Why are you only disfiguring the women? Maybe you could do like the men too? And that would be like a little more fair." part :) and thought that you were concerned with the treatment of the women in the book. I only left a comment since when I remember disfigurement in Nevernight I personally remember Hush first because his was the one that disturbed me the most, beautiful or not. Also because like I said, I so rarely hear people upset about disfigured male characters when the women are beautiful, but when something happens to a female character that tends to be what I hear about the most. :D no worries! Thanks for chatting with me!!!! If it helps, he wrote another series called the Lotus Wars (women also the main BA characters) and as far as I can remember there were a few SERIOUSLY disfigured males in that series so I do not think its an intentionally sexist thing on his part if that was what you were worried about :P he apparently just likes to brutalize his poor characters and since strong females are the ones he seems to prefer writing they are the ones who get some of it too. :(

    So far I'm really confused on what's going on XD In the first chapter I was trying to figure out if it was her magic or if it was just the narration because it was so repetitive with the sex and the murder. Can someone please explain to me what the italicized narration is vs. the normal narration?

    • @ThoughtsOnTomes
      @ThoughtsOnTomes  4 роки тому +1

      the first chapter is like that on purpose. it's a split scene between her first time having sex and her first murder. it's the only chapter that's like that. the italicized narration I'm assuming is footnotes and that's additional information given to you for world building purposes.

    WOW!
    My relationship with Kristoff and his books it is a little bit on the fence (I wasn´t blown away by 'Illuminae' as the rest of booktube, sorry Sam) but this...WOW. This is something I could dive into (despite the blood and the torture).
    Oh, could you tell us a bit about the school? How is the environment of the school? Is it medieval? I love the ambiance and setting in fantasy so it is a point very important for me. Could you share a bit of info about it with me?
    And it is translated into Spanish already so another positive point in favour of the book. I am very intrigued, very, very intrigued (says that when she should go on a book ban because there is no more space on the bookshelf, hehe).
    This goes to the list, so maybe some good person gives me this as a present for Christmas.
    Brace yourself, Sam, I am binging your videos

    I won't lie, im finding the footnotes jarring as hell. I'm only on chapter5-6ish but when i turn a page and see almost half of it is footnotes it really takes me out of the book and plot. Maybe im just a bit weird but it really breaks apart the pacing for me. I don't mind them being small/ish and I do like some of them because they can be quite funny and interesting, but im not sure on the whole thing. TIt's probably prevalent to note that this is the first book I've read that actually uses them.

    Re your comments about the two disfigured women. A story should be fair when dishing out mutilations? Were men crying out for a mutilated female character in a Song of Ice and Fire because of the Hound? And before anybody mentions Lady Stoneheart, she appears 4 books later and is already a dead zombie thing.

      Ashleyreadmylips oh but I keep getting told that “some of the men have scars” or “the beautiful guy that is described as beautiful all the one also had a disfigurement” as if it compares to how the women are described but yeah cool cool

  • @zacharyshaye6111
    @zacharyshaye6111 4 роки тому

    I think that its good that a book has disfigured women because in real life some women are disfigured and in fantasy fiction men can be disfigured and scarred but majority of female characters stay beautiful and never get scarred or disfigured. Fantasy fiction is kind of flawed overall in its portrayal of women and trauma, robin hobb and scott lynch are examples of authors that have physical trauma portrayed for women as well as men.
