How wonderful for Andrew Lownie to be able to discuss his book with someone who has actually read his book and appreciates the thorough research it took to write it. Mr. Lownie's passion for his work clearly shows through, and I thought you did an excellent job, Shauna, highlighting the most interesting parts of the book in a long format, two-part interview that is impossible to duplicate in today's mainstream media outlets where the aim seems to be to transition from one commercial break to another. I’m Irish, and about 20 years ago whilst on holidays in co mayo, we ended up at a lock in until the very early hours. An old man in the pub that I had been talking to, told me that it was a known fact that Mountbatten had been targeted due to his abuse of young boys in the area. He had been expected to go out on his boat alone that morning, and unfortunately others were murdered and seriously injured that day.

What a treat these two interviews with Andrew Lownie were! It is frustrating that good journalists like him are denied access to records that should be available to the public. To hear instead that they have been destroyed is very disturbing. Mr Lownie's persistence and his calm, measured tone earns my respect. I've downloaded the book. Since childhood Queen Elizabeth II was close to mountbatten and often with her sister she visited mountbatten's home.
They were cousins after all and if wasn't for him she couldn't have married philip.
Philip got annoyed and irritated with mountbatten for his constant Interference in philip and his family's personal life and professional life.
Philip was free spirited independent man and didn't like was some one told him what to do, on the other hand Queen has been told by others her whole life what to do and Queen didn't mind mountbatten's interference because he was also close to her father king George VI and all her uncles and aunt.

Brilliant interview with Andrew Lownie, both of them! I struggled to finish his Mountbatten book, just because with every page I disliked both Dickie and Edwina more and more. Eagerly awaiting his Prince Andrew book.
Fingers crossed he writes a book on the late Prince Philip. I don’t think anyone believes the line that Philip spun to Gyles Brandreth, about how he couldn’t have had an affair because he always had security with him - except Gyles Brandreth. Since when did having security ever stop any royal from having an affair?!
And Philip’s relationship to both his parents, and their impact on him, has never been deeply or fully explored either imho. Everyone knows the story details, but how their lives affected him psychologically always gets shrugged off. I do hope Andrew Lownie does a deep dive into the late Duke of Edinburgh.

@@thevintageread agreed! And Mountbatten influenced Philip, who influenced Andrew…. so intriguing to see how these influences play out down the generations. In one of your commentaries on Sarah Duchess of York’s book, you described how Sarah was struggling with the long separations from Prince Andrew when he was in the navy. And how Prince Philip completely dismissed her, saying the Mountbattens had managed it, and so could she! (something like that).

Thanks Shauna for clarifying the fact that the “ dark side’s was not the bisexuality of Mountbatten but the alleged sex offences.
For a moment, it sounded like the outing of his sexuality was the problem, when Lowney stated he led a secret life and double standards.
I understand there were many double standards in British Society surrounding sex and sexuality, however judging from today’s morals is complicated. People had to live double lives with double standards to protect themselves in many ways. Therefore certain choices were made, despite of the potential life changing/ ending consequences. However, I’m not condoning or talking about the sex offences, just the bisexuality.

    Hi Shauna,
    About Prince Phillip.
A few years back, I was working with a colleague who had been a police officer in the UK
He told me that when he was on duty at one of the royal residences, an unauthorised vehicle entered the grounds. It was Prince Phillip driving his girlfriends car. As my colleague stept forward to check the vehicle, he was knocked aside by the car. Prince Phillip parked and alighted from the car, snarled "bloody coppers" and stalked off into the building.
As an aside, my family always reffered to him as Phil the Greek.
Love your show enough to make this the 1st time I have ever commented💖

That as an excellent interview Shauna. I knew about the Mountbatten’s marriage of convenience and extremely profligate lives ..the former military and naval men in my family despised him and wouldn’t have given him the time of day, in fact they were surprised no one had ‘knocked him off’ earlier! However, it never dawned on me that he had ‘a type of autism’! It’s just Autism - severe, mild or moderate or in his day also possibly Asperger’s Disorder….I always just thought he was an arrogant b@^%@*d who always thought he deserved more than he had…it seems he awarded himself a number of the medals he wore. It was the Queen Mum who kept him in his place….as clearly, being an Aristocrat herself she would have known where all their secrets were buried and, being who she was, no one dared cross her…including Dickie !
Thank you for a thoroughly engaging interview!

Shauna, you ask all the right questions. You and Andrew make a great team and he provides such amazing content with all his books. I'm looking forward to his book on Prince Phillip. Is it too early tho? He hasn't been passed that long ago. Just a thought. I'm sure it'll take Andrew a while to dig up content/papers. Thanks for another great interview!

Incredible deep dive interview that reveals fascinating elements that brought about the assassination of Louis Mountbatten. Appears Ole Louis had it more for captive males than females---definitely a hanger-on to power intoxication than any form of affection. Ms. Kay shows perfection in conducting an intelligent interview.

As long as Charles is alive--and anyone who knew Prince Phillip--there will be a lead wall around the Mountbatten and his demons. He was far too clever and self-protective to abuse members of the RF, but I sense that Philip was smart enough to get wise to him later in life. I don't doubt Philip destroyed his own documents--he was very wise.

I am busy catching up on the Andrew Lownie talks. This one I had to listen to as my dad in the parachute regiment was a guard of Lord Mountbatten in Singapore. My dad was also in India however, never mentioned being a guard at that time only the surrender of the Japanese.
I travelled from Johannesburg through Israel, Greece, Yugoslavia, Austria & arrived in Italy at the time of the death of Lord Mountbatten. The one & only English news paper that I bought during my year travel. I surprised my parents at the 35th anniversary of Arnhem & met Major General Frost. (A Bridge Too Far)
When I arrived back in the UK my dad announced he & I would travel down to Aldershot the next day to attend Lord Mountbatten's memorial service at the Parachute Regiments Chapel which the young Prince Charles attended in full uniform.
I knew the Mountbatten's had an open marriage because my dad mentioned on 2 or maybe 3 occasions that Lord Mountbatten would arrive back at the Raffles Hotel with a women on each arm. He never mentioned seeing Lord Mountbatten with boys/men, he was possibly having a good time with the women of Singapore.
