Traditionally, solid axles are superior, but technically speaking, independent suspension should always be better. The reality is they do not make factory cars with good independent suspension for heavy off-road. But if you look at side-by-side and ultra 4 independent is the go especially in the front.
yer ive seen some build in america, hope something end up being legal/ engineerable here with a good long arm ifs kit. Ive heard superior engineering did on recently
You are going further than I did when I had my Jackaroo! Never broke anything as it was my daily driver so I babied it a fair bit! Unfortunately it sound like you are running a vehicle which has too many kays on the clock. Every component has a life span and you are finding said lifespan! Also bigger tyres would help with those ruts!
I have always owned solid Axel' 4wds currently a 01 tj jeep.solid Axel's will always go places that ifs 4wds just wont go..down side to solid Axel's is the bouncy ride....ifs gives a nice smoith ride.i think it comes down to thinking about what you buy and what your going to do with it.
A locker will help a lot. About the radiator being exposed, it's true, it happened to my L200, some fins got pinched and developed a leak. Sadly investing in gear for the car is inevitable if you want to continue going on off road trips like the one on the video. You may call it "cheap" insurance. Because a solid bash plate literally is. Cheers.
The ole power lines! I went a few weeks ago with my wife and daughter and was amazed how cut up the track now is. I remember going 10 years ago when I got through with a pretty much stock 4x4 We got to exactly where you were and had to turn around and go back, especially with the family in the car Going to have to go back with bigger tyres and a lift I think 😅
Jimny will go anywhere. Follow at your peril. Have heard some great stories of their capability. Small and light. Tritons are good but remember they are built to a budget. I think doing the stuff you're trying you need to start looking at a lot better stuff than stock. My triton goes on the beach, through the paddocks and very very occasionally I'll have a look at a bumpy track but if it's like your video, forget it.
has 33 inch tyres 2 inch lift, just needs lil more clearance (Mabey 35's n 3 inch lift if it fits) n upgraded bash plate side steps and lockers haha and should be golden
sell it get a gu patrol or even better a gq with gu diffs , patrols have the strongest diffs and cvs and need very little modification to get flexing , a few k on good suspension and supporting mods and a front locker will be more then enough
yes as so ive heard gu's do what the strongest diff n axles (or strongest drive line in general for off roading). But im also curious about long arm setups with ifs as that may be better if done right.

it likely wasn't the cage that broke first. the problem with cv's is the force is trying to expand the outer bell part. the balls are trying to climb up the sides of the grooves because they're round which blows the bell apart. japanese 4wd's with solid axles use cv's. jeeps use universal joints because they're stronger and serviceable as do most other american solid axle 4wd's. although the latest jl wranglers sold in australia do use cv's which is shit. tldr ifs sucks solid axles rule, cv's have an inherent weakness, universal joints are stronger and easier to replace. the exceptions are high dollar ifs is better for high speed offroad race cars and a cv can be stronger than a universal joint but only if it's much larger or made from a better material (but i'm not sure that counts, because a uni could also be larger and made from better material)

Agree with ya! flexy n rocky tracks, deff need lockers, to avoid wheel spin 🙃

plenty of 'chicken' tracks, plenty of side roads leading to the main road too, i went back to highway in 2wd without an issue from there
2wd diff locked will go further then 4wd unlocked
And at those kms don't be surprised a cv failed
