- Welcome to my first 'Tea Reads' episode! In this video, I'm joined by my Mum (Donna), and we share our regular Friday routine of a teatime chat about books over tea and cake. In our 'Tea Reads' episodes, we'll be sharing great short reads that can be enjoyed in the time it takes to drink a cup of tea. And as an extra special treat, we baked a Victoria Sponge Cake for our Friday treat and showed you the step-by-step process for baking this delicious cake.

ABOUT ME: I'm Miranda Mills, a freelance writer and photographer who recently moved from London to Yorkshire.
I love how close you and your mother are, it’s so sweet. You are both so lucky to have each other.
This should really be a television series!
😂😘
Agree!! ☺️
Yes, you should pitch it to a tv company. You are both naturals.
I LOVE this. You too are so calming together in your cosy home!
I loved this video ! Reminded me of my Mum when we cooked together and our chats about our new cook books ! You are so lucky to share your life with your dear Mum. Donna did such a lovely job baking the Victoria sponge it was superb! My Mum was one of 12 and her sisters were all wonderful cooks ! Their family had their own pastry cook business . So cakes were such a big part of our life always. They would have a Sisters Birthday each month and it was a delicious spread of afternoon tea . I'm so very glad i found you Miranda and love to your Mum .
Thank you for the lovely comment! I'm so glad you enjoyed our baking and chatting and that it brought back some happy memories for you :)
This was so fun!! I love to bake. I've never made a Victoria sponge, but now I'm eager to try. The Tea Reads portion was such a treat, too. When I have my own garden, I fully intend to follow Beverley Nichols' bulb planting advice. Tea time today will be a pumpkin quinoa muffin and some more Wilkie Collins!
Your own teatime treat & read sound lovely, Elizabeth! I'm so glad you enjoyed this video - thank you! xxx
This is such a delightful way to spend an afternoon. Thank you, lovely Miranda and Donna, for inviting us all to tea and book talk. Wonderful...
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you 📚😘
So lovely to see your beautiful mother-daughter relationship, I can relate, I am an only child, so for me my mom is someone I consider to be one of my best friends 🥰😉
Thanks so much! Yes, I’m an only child too, and I definitely lucked out in the mum department 😄💕
Thank you Miranda and Donna !With such videos my day becomes cozier and brighter.Donna' haircut is so charming.Loving you both!😍😍😍😍
So happy to hear that! Thank you xxx
First of all Donna, your hair looks amazing!!! When I first clicked on the video I noticed your hair first, Miranda this video elevated my mood from a 2 all the way to 10...I could watch You and Donna bake all day...the cake is beautiful and looks delicious, I never realized how not icing the sides can make a cake look so beautiful 🥰 and OMG!!!! The Reading 📖 💕💕💕
Thank you so much, Kiki! I’m so very happy you enjoyed this episode and that it helped to lift your mood. And I’m so glad my Mum’s hair turned out alright 😅 - thanks for your lovely words. Enjoy your weekend xxx
This is the kind of content I did not know I needed in my life, thank you Miranda and Donna, and please keep it going! I had a hideously frantic day at work and watching this instantly made me relax, I loved it! I always make Victoria sponge with raspberry jam and whipped cream, I like the sharpness of the fruit, and somehow I always think of it as a summer treat - I usually make ginger cakes and parkin in autumn. Great tea reads as well! I only discovered The Diary of A Provincial Lady last Easter and it became one of my favourite books, I loved it! Have a fab weekend, gx ps: your mum's hair looks adorable
I’m sorry you had a frantic day, Georgia, but I’m so glad this video helped you unwind. I hope you have a restful weekend ahead of you! Thank you very much - I’m really relieved the hair turned out ok 😄💇🏻♀️❤️
How amazing 😉 what a treat getting to watch you and you mum bake a Victoria sponge. Have a lovely weekend! You both are a real
joy to watch, and I can’t wait to try the recipe. 🌺🌸🌼🌻
Thank you so much! Hope you have fun giving the Victoria Sponge a go. Enjoy your weekend too 😘
I missed this post so glad to catch up on it and with you today. Another delightful baking session and read. The bulb advice made me think of our battle with squirrels here who seem to love them. Your scarf is gorgeous too. Love your hair cut, Donna. See you next Friday!
Thank you very much! I am hoping we don’t lose all our bulbs to the squirrels 🐿 😂
This was such a lovely video to watch- a perfect cosy accompaniment with tea! Beverley Nichols is fast becoming a favourite of mine, his writing never fails to make me laugh. Thanks to your lovely mum for sharing her recipe, also.
Yay! Thank you so much; I’m really glad you enjoyed it. BN often makes me chuckle too 😂
I so enjoyed afternoon tea with you. So cozy and lovely. Your hair looks lovely Donna.💙
Thank you so much! Really glad you enjoyed it! Xxx
What a great idea for a video. Such a lovely way to start the weekend. Your mum’s hair looks very chic - well done Miranda!
Oh thank you so much! Really glad you enjoyed it! I was rather anxious about the hair so glad it turned out ok 😅💇🏻♀️
What a delightful episode Miranda and Donna! The Victoria Sponge Cake looked delectable, and I am looking forward to taste testing your recipe once I purchase the recommended cake tins. The book readings had me smiling ear to ear...and as always after one of your episodes, my book wish list has grown a little longer! Wishing you both a lovely weekend xo
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Do let us know how you get on with the sponge. Have a wonderful weekend 😘
Lovely, I really enjoyed you discussing books with your Mum and baking🤗

So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you very much. Enjoy your weekend 😊
Such a lovely chat and video, so cosy! Thank you Miranda and Donna! Looking foward for next week! 🧡
Thanks so much :)
Hello Ladies. This was such an enjoyable video. I absolutely loved it. I have a cookbook of vintage British cake recipes, which, of course, has the recipe for Victoria Sponge. I have always wanted to bake one, and have went so far as to purchase the 7 inch pans, not realizing the 6 inch pans may have been the better choice. I am going to bake one very soon. I also totally enjoyed the readings and discussion on bulb planting from you and your mother. I have always felt bulbs produce the most beautiful flowers in the garden. As always, I will anxiously await your next video. Take good care....... Crystal.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much! I’m excited you’ll be baking a Victoria sponge soon - do let us know how you get on 🍰💕
How beautiful! What a precious video baking and talking about books together as mother and daughter 😍💕😊
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it 😊❤️
Hello Miranda and Donna, thank you both for inviting us to join you for your first 'Tea Reads'. What a delight! Your cake looked so tasty. Can't get enough of this channel! And absolutely LOVE hearing Donna's stories. Thank you, beautiful ladies!
What a perfect way to spend a Friday afternoon. You and your mum made me chuckle, you are both so charming to watch. I’m not a baker, but I was very inspired by your delicious looking sponge, who knows maybe next time I might just have one of my own, my family would delighted and most grateful to you to ladies. I hope this does become a regular event, it will be lovely to have something so lovely to look forward to 😊
I’m so happy you enjoyed it, thank you! And it would be lovely if we inspired you to try baking your own sponge! Do let me know if you give it a go 🍰😊

I think this is such a generous thing that you and your mum do, inviting us into your home for a chat. I loved it. The cake looked delicious. We are ploughing our way through a coconut and lime loaf cake at the moment.
It had poured with rain all day here, so we had a quick trip to a local farmers market; then this afternoon I have been reading September by Rosamund Pilcher from your recommendations that I watched last weekend. Stay warm and dry xxx
So glad you enjoyed it- thank you! It’s rained steadily all day here too. Currently have the oil lamp lit, a glass of sherry to hand & reading Elly Griffiths’ latest 😊📚🍷

Oh Miranda this was wonderful. I knew you were baking and that I would get hungry half way through, so I pulled out 'Oats in the North, Wheat from the south' ( which I discovered on your podcast) and baked Regula's Madeira cake prior to watching this video. Naturally there was also tea to accompany the cake. I loved this video, but of course I say that about all your videos. Take care x
I'm so happy you enjoyed it! Thank you. How lovely you baked a cake to accompany us :)
