This allows creators to be protected and make money from their works while still ensuring that there's a good chance it would be public domain in your lifetime and you could use it creatively however you wanted. If works up to 1988 were public domain, we would see a lot less shameless cash-grabbing sequels and remakes out of Hollywood, and they would strive to make the best movie possible to beat the competition. I'm in high school and if I made a copyrighted work today, my grandchildren would probably be retired by the time it enters public domain.
