some other ways to make levels more replayable: - Each level should stand out visually from the others, or at least be memorable in some way. - Shorter levels are easier to replay because of the low time commitment. This isn't a must though, as there are plenty of games with good sized levels that stay entertaining to replay despite the length. - Quick restart times (if the player has to watch a long death animation when they restart, they'll get bored much faster) - No long wait times in between gameplay. This can even be things like slow moving platforms. There's probably some more I missed but yeah
Really great points! I 100% agree. In Lumina Rush I’ve definitely prioritized fast restart times and avoided moments were the player feels like they are waiting for something to happen! It makes speedrunning levels feel more natural and accessible
That's a great question, I imagine it mostly stands on the first two concepts of the mechanics and the world just feeling enjoyable to play in. Replaying a game like Breath Of The Wild is similar to rereading a good book or re-watching a good movie, sure you already know what's going to happen but you simply want to experience it again and maybe find some things you missed.
I don't think the games you're talking about are replayable in the traditional, like, you are not finishing the game and playing it again, as much as self improvement being part of the core gameplay loop. When you are playing it "again but better" it's more akin to revisiting old zones in a metroidvania to get collectibles you missed, or replaying a game like undertale to get the pacifist ending, it feels like one cohesive experience. If I think of replayable I feel more about something like dark souls where I'll get to play the game in a different order or with a different build. The difference being that each playthrough does achieve my goal, while if I was playing neon white or if I'm speedrunning dark souls, it's not really replaying the game so much as the objective being shifted from "finishing the game" to "getting under that time no matter how many retry it takes".
Really good points!! Yea there's definitely a distinction to replaying a game in its entirety vs a game having replayable parts such as levels with a goal in mind
If I know anything of platformers, people LOVE to speedrun the category
Ha so true!!!
How tf is this guy not popular

I wonder how some of your replayability concepts would translate to open world/objective games?

im not sure the normal missions could work for that but you can definitely have time and score attack challenges on the side
