    Howard wasn't married (he barely even dated).... It was his mom's illness and death that is cited as a major part in driving him to suicide.
    Those Del Reys are absolutely THE starting point for exploring Howard. El Borak, Solomon Kane, Sword Woman - they are all excellent, and have amazing intros and afterwords. Those three Conan volumes should be on every fantasy/sword and sorcery shelf.

      Yeah, that was all corrected in other comments way back when I originally posted this. Don't know why I mis-remembered that. But YES, absolutely agree the whole Del-rey collection is a must own for any Robert E. Howard fans! Definitive compilations with loads of fascinating extras delving into Howard's creative process. Still a few I need to pick up.

      @@zaranyzerak If you like the Conan books, check out 'Hither Came Conan,' which came out at Howard Days this past Spring. It's got about 60 essays on all the original stories. Plus a few 'extra' Howard-related ones. My copy sits next to The Coming of Conan and makes a nice bookend to the Del Reys.
      And I'm a big fan of both Conan Exiles, and Age of Conan. Both are good games, and AoC absolutely drips Conan.

    As an avid fan of Robert E. Howard, I'm grateful for the Del Rey collections. BUT- as typical of Del Rey- the bindings are cheap.. and two of the four volumes I own are pages coming loose. Sad- but Del Rey needs to get it together.

    Hi, thanks for the clarification. First on my list are the Del Rey books and then I might venture into some of the comics, fantasy isn't too hot for me, but I do love the old pulps of authors such as HP Lovecraft, so I've been wanting to get some of Conan for a while. By the way, your videos are awesome, thanks for taking the time to record them and share with us your astounding collection!

    Robert E. Howard never married. And he killed himself by a gunshot to the head after being told his sick mother was going to die.
    As for illustrations of Conan (and this is just my personal opinion) the only person whose ever done him justice are the paintings by Frank Frazetta. Used for the Ace/Sphere/Lancer paperbacks. I've been a fan of Conan since the late 70's and still to this day have never seen anything that comes close to capturing Conan and the atmosphere of the Hyborian age like Frazetta's paintings. Everything else just looks cheesy,cliche' or downright hokey. But again that's just one mans opinion.
    It's the same with Karl Edward Wagner's Kane the Mystic Swordsman. The only paintings, illustrations whatever to do Kane justice are the paintings/book covers by Frazetta. Especially Dark Kingdom used on the cover of Dark Crusade.

    Great stuff!
    Now I'm completely new to Conan, I've known about the films all my life and have started getting interested in the stories the last couple of years but I haven't really read them at all.
    So I actually got the Complete Chronicles of Conan a couple of years back in which I've started to read just a little bit, but would you say that's a good place to start?
    I'm more for reading stories than actual comics, but I almost don't know anything about Robert E. Howard's works on Conan.

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  5 років тому +1

      Yep, that's a great place to start! It has all the original published stories, not to mention is a very nice edition to display proudly on your shelf. The main difference with the collection I show in the video, is this set had a lot of other stuff too. Early drafts of stories, alternate versions of stories, unfinished stories and fragments, a real wealth of extra material to dive into in addition to all of the original stories in the order they were published. So you get a real insight into Howard's writing and story development process, and see how Conan evolved over the course of the original publication history. It's a great set!

      Now I was re-watching this video since I was thinking of maybe getting these versions of the Conan stories, since they are a bit easier to read than that full blown complete chronicle collection xD
      So thanks for showing them off and letting us know how they look and how they are in general :)

    The grin on my face widens when our host admits he hasn't actually read much of the books he's reviewing. While he
    educates and comforts us listeners saying how 'insanely faithful' the Savage Sword comic adaptations are to the source
    material the grin stretching across my face reaches the point of being painful. When I was a kid we didn't have grotesque
    Schwarzenegger movies, Marvel comics and a thousand bad painters trying to inform our vision of Conan. We just had
    Frazetta and Robert E. Howard. It was all we needed.

    Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me what the difference is between the different Marvel comics, namely Savage Sword, Conan the Barbarian, and King Conan? Thanks. Great video, I'll be purchasing the three Del Rey books and the first few volumes of the Dark Horse Conan monthlies.

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro 6 років тому

      Conan the Barbarian was the original series, which was pretty popular. People were writing in saying they wanted something edgier, closer to the original REH stories, and so Marvel came out with Savage Sword, which was actually an 8x11 black and white magazine aimed toward adults.. They did this to get past the Comics Code Authority and was essentially an uncensored Conan comic with more violence and nudity.
      Conan the King/King Conan was basically a spinoff of Conan the Barbarian focusing on the later era of Conan's life. Marvel was hesitant to run "old man Conan" stories in the main title, so they created the third title mainly as a way to tell those stories without breaking up the main chronology of the Barbarian title.
      Of the three, I feel like Savage Sword was the closest to the original stories. If you want to compare it to the movies, _Conan the Barbarian_ the comic, was closer to the PG-13 Conan the Destroyer movie, and _Savage Sword of Conan_ was more like the original Conan The Barbarian movie, if that makes any sense. I always felt like they were "holding back" in the Barbarian comic.

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  6 років тому +1

      FellVoice Yes, a big difference. The Del Rey sets not only present all of the original stories in the original order of publication, but also contain an additional 300+ pages of unpublished material written by Howard as well that isn't in any other editions. It is by far the most comprehensive and complete collection of everything he ever wrote about Conan.

    I gotta say Howard had me laughing albeit maybe unintentionally while I read beyond the black river. I think he compares Conan to a panther three times in one paragraph and during the course of the story we are informed of the fact that Conan has an uncanny ability to split peoples skulls down to their teeth, he does it five times at least! Intentional or not, fun things like that are appreciated to break up the serious tone of the stories. I don't think Howard gets much credit for "ha-ha" fun.
